Commercial Blogging

Commercial Blogging Most professions regarding teaching, engineering, broadcasting, accounting, computer programming among all other professions that meet the demands of the digital age, require the use of the transfer of information. The job is more focused on the perception, interpretation, analyses and development of information rather than to produce goods and other products of physical substance. New communication technologies nowadays allow the diffusion or transmission of information rapidly if compared to the setup at later years. Technologies, such as emails and video calls, provide immense and inexpensive transfer of information from the source to its recipient throughout the global community. Consequently, multi-national corporations and companies worldwide, both local and international, developed workplaces away from the usual and conventional places through the use of these available communications technologies. Telework, as it was labeled, benefit employers by providing a very concise solution for cutting costs attributed to spaces in offices as well as other relevant maintenance costs and an efficient control over their employees. On the other hand, in a separate but relative case, it allows employees to work under his/her convenient workplace, mostly in homes, at the most flexible time schedule. Employees do their jobs without the need of going in and out of offices. Telework allows working parents to watch over their children while they do the accomplishments of their work at home. This opens the idea that telework has advantages in social and cultural aspects. As other forms of work do, telework neglected the idea of gender classifications in society and the varying responsibilities of parenting. In fact, as mothers spend more time parenting than fathers do, it is not surprising that more women are engaged to teleworking

The Digital Age

...The Digital Age Franklin D. Ripley Post University The Digital Age Digital Natives: Rise of the Social Networking Generation, written by Michael D. Myers and David Sundaram, talks about how people that were born as digital natives are changing the workplace as we know it. This article goes into explaining the differences between natives and immigrants and how they use technology to suit their different needs. Digital immigrants are more reluctant to change and are somewhat fixed in their ways. The saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is used to describe digital immigrants. With the world today revolving around social media, managers and executive level managers are blocking them from their company’s network as a means of safe guarding from hacks and such. What they don’t realize is that the digital natives that work for them, need these sites to function. Digital natives thrive on technology. So much so that it is a lifestyle and it is the basis for their way of working and communicating. Natives are literate, connected, social, and in need of instant gratification. (Myers, M. D., & Sundaram, D) Digital natives use technology as a way of communicating between each other by the use of blogs and texting, whereas immigrants use face to face or email to communicate. Digital Books for Digital Natives written by Cynthia Houston, speaks about how the internet has changed the way we as a society read books. Mainly this article talks about children literature...

The Future of Printed Books in the Digital Age

...The Future of Printed Books in the Digital Age Students Name University Affiliation The Future of Printed Books in the Digital Age Books are cultural tools, which have undergone considerable changes since their inception. In the early times, books took the form of stones and clay tables, which, due to technology, evolved to the modernly printed book. Despite changes, the objective of books remained the same, which is, storing and preserving information. The storage and preservation of information have made it possible over the years to gain substantial knowledge. Therefore, the printed book will forever remain the most useful invention in learning (Bruccoli, 2007). On the other hand, professionals from libraries and publishing groups have commented that, the future usage of the printed books is on the decline taking into account the swiftly evolving technologies. The fear arises because digitalization has made it possible to provide printed books in electronic forms known as e-books, which has made it easier to access information. The threat is significant considering the wide usage e-books as the primary electronic contents in learning (Buzzeto-More, Nicole, & Elaboid, 2007). The question on the future of printed books in the digital age has induced mixed reactions. While some scholars feel that printed books will survive the digital age, others have commented that digitalization will cause the “death” of printed books. Scholars in opposition...

Kodak and the Digital Age

...Kodak and the Digital Revolution [pic] [pic][pic]Brief Overview: Kodak is a multinational American corporation which has become a household name most known for its film products. The company has come face to face with many changes due to the digital revolution which has created a rapid changing photography industry. George Eastman began Kodak in 1880 and introduced the first Kodak camera in 1888 coining the slogan “you press the button, we do the rest.” Eastman held a high standard for the company when it came to competition however with many managerial and product line changes, Kodak has slowly fallen behind in the industry. The company has experienced many shortcomings with the most recent trend of digital photography. According to Exhibit 7, from 1998-2002 Kodak was 2nd to Sony in the U.S. for the percent of units sold. The company is now considering layoffs as market share, film sales, and company revenues are down. Problems: § The company is faced with multiple managerial problems. First, the company lacked fresh blood in its management team. All of its CEO’s primarily came from the manufacturing jobs within its own company. This hurt the company overall and put a damper on keeping up with technological changes and competition as “Kodak avoided anything risky or innovative.” Second, when the company finally did add new blood to its management team things still didn’t look up. CEO Kay Whitmore was added in 1990 and changed the focus to “film based technology” such...

The Digital Age: The History Of The Digital Age

...What the problem is, why is it important Economic inequality has been an unceasing aspect of human societies. As German philosopher Karl Marx famously observed, “The history of all previous societies has been the history of class struggles”. But while the underlying power dynamics have historically been linked to material possessions and social divides, a new invisible and ubiquitous medium of inequality has emerged. Computers and technology have begun to completely dominate our lives, thrusting the world into what some would call the Digital Age. (Reference) Underlying this plethora of computers are nothing more than numbers and characters, arranged to form algorithms. These algorithms are essential in any computer type device for operation;...

The Digital Age

...The Digital World The digital world of today can be understood as a product of late-Victorian construction of the machinery of information organization combined with Modernist visual forms. In his doctoral dissertation, The Engineering of Vision from Constructivism to Computers, Lev Manovich, professor of New Media at the University of San Diego, states it is the influence of Modernist visual forms, mainly Soviet era Constructivism, that shapes the look of the current digital world (e.g. the Internet). Professor Simon Cook of Duke University, in his recent paper, Late Victorian Visual Reasoning and a Modern History of Vision, argues that Manovich overlooks the importance of the Victorian period in influencing the aesthetics of our present digital design. Cook bases his argument on the concept of an orderly and well-catalogued Internet, as if the system had been developed in nineteenth century Britain. However, due to the chaotic, disorganized and ever-changing look of the digital world, the argument of a Victorian based system is flawed. The late nineteenth century does not have the impact Cook believes it does, whereas Manovich remains on track in his original argument. Still, Manovich’s ideas can only be regarded on a temporary basis, because the face of the digital world has changed drastically since its development, and will continue to in the near future. Before exploring the look of the current digital world, it is first important to look at its physical development...

Education in the Digital Age

...Education in the Digital Age Welcome to the digital age where everything is accessible on the internet, even a masters degree. Is an online degree easier to obtain than a traditional brick and mortar college degree? Online education can be considered equivalent to a traditional degree, but requires unique learning habits. Online education is a different style of learning. Taking a class requires self-discipline and a mindset of self-teaching: “Students need to determine if online learning is an option for them because not everyone does well with this type of study. Some questions that any potential online students should ask is whether or not they can learn independently; how organized they are with their time; whether they are computer savvy; their level of reading comprehension; and if they have at least ten hours a week to devote to each course”(Snyder 1). Online learning will not work for every person seeking higher education. To add to the level of difficulty: ”Often online instructors assign more reading materials than required in a regular classroom to ensure that students are engaged”(Snyder 1), thus requiring a higher level of independence. Earning a higher degree online provides a unique benefit to those able to handle self-guidance: “Students will be able to learn at their own pace”(Snyder 1). Earning a college degree online is very different than that of a traditional school. Schools with online courses are rewarding students for prior learning experience cutting...

The New Digital Age

...Yen Nguyen ISM 6026 The New Digital Age – Reshape the Future of People, Nation and business book review “The New Digital Age” by Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen gives us their vision of how technology will impact and reshape our lives in the future; a world of fully connectivity where every individual will be a part of the whole virtual world through the critical development of technology. Schmidt and Cohen’s argument is that the rapid improvement of computer technology with internet access will significantly connect and transfer every aspect of life from the physical world to the new virtual one, whether it is for the better, for the worse, or just different. The book also addresses the way humans interact with, apply, and explore technology in life and the guidance for humans to adapt the changes in the new technological revolution. The two authors start by introducing a variety of new technologies which are created and used to increase our efficiency such as smart devices, “additive manufacturing” _ 3-D printing, artificial intelligence, voice and gesture recognition, and robotics. These new technologies provide new opportunities for not only business but also many other fields including: education, healthcare, and entertainment. They indicate that the global trend will be supported strongly as connectivity spreads become power in the future, and an effective working environment will be created when the new technology’s invention removes language and geographical...

Transparency in the Digital Age

...Transparency in the Digital Age. Discuss the following quote: “ In the age of technology, secrecy must give way to transparency. This should be feared only by those who have something to hide.” « Big Brother is watching you!»1 We can hear Orwell’s famous metaphor ringing in our ears like a blaring alarm bell. Although his vision is of a radical utopian society, it would be easy to think this is already a reality. The age of “Big Data” is upon us and we must face up to the question of total transparency and its consequences. In fact, the very notion of secrecy and the concept of confidential information have already been put under serious pressure by new technologies. In both public and private spheres this issue has become an ever-growing topic for serious political debate. It is the volume of data and the ease with which it can be treated and analysed that has metamorphosed our society. Sharing personal data has become almost indispensable for the individual to participate actively in modern life. The problem is that the individual is perhaps not always aware how this data is used either individually or collectively once it is in the hands of authorities or businesses, which have their own particular interests at heart. This also leads us to consider the relationship between governments and citizens in this electronic era: Could the State become “Big Brother”? Would more transparency be advantageous for society? Let’s look at the assertion we are asked to consider;...

Professionalism in the Digital Age

...Professionalism in the information age The increased use of social media, combined with the ease of finding information online, can blur personal and work identities, posing new considerations for professionalism in the information age. A professional approach is imperative in this digital age in order to maintain confidentiality, honesty, and trust in any profession. Although the ability of professionals to use online social networks, blogs, and media sites for personal and professional reasons should be preserved, a proactive approach is recommended that includes actively managing one's online presence and making informed choices about disclosure. The development of a "dual-citizenship" approach to online social media that separates public and private personae would allow professionals to both leverage networks for professional connections and maintain privacy in other aspects. The things we post on our personal accounts can have major consequences in our professional lives. Sometimes, talking about your work experiences on your personal accounts can get you fired, even if you are relating them in a humorous way. Medical professionals need to be more cautious and create an online professional presence and avoid potential negative impact on their patients, institution, as well as their careers. Perhaps to maintain appropriate professional boundaries physicians should consider separating personal and professional content online. Social media has influenced how we define...

The Digital Age of Education

...The Digital Age of Education: Who Benefits More in a Mutual Learning Environment? It is 8:00 in the morning and another school day has just begun. Mrs. Sullivan is powering on her SMART board so she can demonstrate today’s spelling lesson to her first grade class. Mr. Price is waiting for the bulb in his projector to achieve its maximum brightness before he begins showing his fourth grade history class an interactive map about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of a new world. Mrs. Peattie disperses electronic touch screen tablets for her students to use as they learn how to diagram sentences. Later in the day, Mrs. Thomas makes sure all the laptop computers for her classroom have a full charge so she can teach her seventh grade math students the importance of fractions as they work out exercises on the machines by themselves. These instances are a common occurrence in modern schools and classrooms. Technology is being integrated into classrooms all over to enhance and enrich students’ educations. But who really benefits from having this technology in the classroom? Both students and teachers benefit from the integration of technology in the classroom by creating new opportunities for learning, improving performance, and increasing involvement. The general purpose of having technology in the classroom may not be as evident to everyone. With the teacher/student ratio on the rise, individual attention for students is limited. Beneficially, technology is the answer...

Changing Journalism in the Digital Age

...Changing Journalism in the Digital Age Changing Journalism in the Digital Age The evolution of mass communication has seen a change in the way the world receives news and information. With the advent of the Internet and converging media, journalists can bring information to a wider spectrum of audiences through newer methods of communication. New technologies and the increasing rise of social media both as a mean of communication have enabled information to be shared in real-time around the world. In return, this allows people who normally never read a newspaper, to become aware of the journalist’s articles by people they are connected with through social media sites and various means of web browsing. Journalists are increasingly connected to their audiences in comparison to the past days of the printing press. What was normally a newspaper delivered to the front doorstep carrying news that occurred from the previous day, journalism has become mainstream. Journalists at first thought the Internet was to become the demise of the traditional newspaper and therefore eliminate the need for news reporting. However the case, these journalists have discovered that by converging with social media, they can reach a larger spectrum of audiences with their articles and publications.
