Dinosaurs and the Bible

There is widespread controversy about dinosaurs: When did they roam the earth? Did they coexist with humans? Why did they go extinct? These are common questions that evolutionists and creationists alike try to explain.
In the article “Dinosaurs and the Bible” Ken Ham tries to explain biblically these common questions about dinosaurs. He explains that in the school systems today, we are taught that dinosaurs lived millions of year ago and went extinct before humans were even on the earth. Ham then refutes this by explaining that dinosaurs did in fact exist with humans, and using the bible as his reference proves his point. According to the language of this article, it seems that this article is aimed at a reader who isn’t knowledgeable on the subject. He uses simple language, and gives additional explanations for certain concepts of evolution, and ideas that he uses. This aids in the comprehension of the beliefs that Ham proposes. Ham certainly proves his credibility throughout by giving multiple scripture passages, and using the evolutionist theories to strengthen his statements. He clearly explains his beliefs in a convincing way. He also raises many common questions, and then gives a logical answer that fits perfectly with his ideas. However, there could have been more counter arguments to further back up the statements made by Ham. In the conclusion of the article, Ham gives the gospel message, which could possibly be viewed as an emotional appeal because the reader is swayed to another topic, and perhaps affecting their views on the creationism outlook. This change in topic also takes away from the argument made and possibly lessens the strength of the argument. It makes for a weak final impression, in terms of Hams original argument. This next article “Debating the Dinosaur Extinction,” Leslie Mullen explores the possibility that the chicxulub crater was the result of a meteorite that killed the dinosaurs. This is not a direct opposing view of the first article; however the theories stated by Mullen do contradict the beliefs of Ham’s article.
It is apparent that Mullen’s audience is evolutionists who don’t even consider the Bible as a possible source of explanation. She never mentions anything about opposing views, except for other possible evolutionist theories, implying that only her belief is correct. This biased approach weakens her credibility, because the reader is missing half of the argument. Mullen does however seem to be knowledgeable on the subject. There are examples that explain the ideas or theories that Mullen is proposing. Also there are sufficient statistical evidences that help prove her point. Despite the evidence supporting Mullen’s belief, her credibility is marred due to the lack of a counter argument. The final paragraph of this article leaves the reader unfulfilled. Mullen proposes a single question, which goes unanswered. This hanging ending makes a weak final statement, and overall weakens the argument. Over all, I believe that Ken Ham definitely made the better argument. He addresses many of the points of good rhetoric, where Mullen lacked in many of those areas. Ham backed up his arguments with the opposing views, where Mullen completely ignored any opposing view. Also Ham thoroughly discussed his view where I believe that Mullen could have developed her view more. Both of the conclusions were generally weak, however Ham made up for this by having strengths in the other areas of rhetoric.

Dinosaurs in the Bible

...DINOSAURS IN THE BIBLE There are a number of places where it appears that dinosaurs or other similar creatures are mentioned in the scriptures. Remember that the Bible was translated into English long before the word "dinosaur" was coined. However, the word "dragon" appears 21 times in the Old Testament alone. "You shall tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shall you trample under feet" (Psalm 91:13). From the context it is clearly speaking about a real creature that it would be impressive and intimidating to step on! Jeremiah 51:34 tells, "he has swallowed me up like a dragon..." which brings to mind the way many carnivorous reptiles swallow their prey whole. Both dragons of the sea (Psalm 74:13) and field (Isaiah 43:20) are mentioned. Indeed, Genesis 1:21 can best be translated: "And God created great sea monsters..." One such sea monster became sufficiently well-known to the ancients to be given the special name "Rahab" (Isaiah 51:9). The prophet Ezekiel likens Pharaoh to a sea monster that invaded the Nile river and stirred up the mud (32:2). The Hebrew word, "Tannin," is from the root meaning "to extend." The language conjures up an image of a long-necked plesiosaur-like creature paddling up the river and stirring up mud from the Nile delta with its flippers. Just such a creature is depicted by the ancient Egyptians who may have netted one just as Ezekiel describes in verse 3. Job is the oldest book in the Bible. This book is very interesting...

Creationism

...Bobby Rappach 11-1-12 Mr. Boyle Creationism The concept of Creationism has been around since a monotheistic Abrahamic God. It is nothing more than a literal interpretation of the creation story of Genesis as a basis for the creation of everything in the universe. Until the early 1500’s it was the common belief that the world was flat and this is one the only exceptions that creationist sects have excepted when it comes to modern day science along with the earth not being the center of the universe. Today’s definition can be understood as Christianity and Catholicism until the years surrounding 1500AD. Even after such discoveries it had a large amount of belief compared to new scientific discoveries. As scientific advances over the past 500 years have explained more mysteries, more and more different sects of creationism have come to be. Each sect has a certain set of scientific facts that they accept as being true, and use their own type of science to prove modern scientific findings to be incorrect. The most extreme sect of creationism that I will be focusing on is Young- Earth Creationism (YEC). The Earth to them in term of age is somewhere between 5,700 to 10,000 years old and either rejects or has an alternative version of every science. Many ancient calendars throughout time have recorded the world dating back to as early as 5500BC, and this history merged with the creation story leads to claims of times before humans being able to write is nonexistent. ...Debate Evolution Dinosaurs why extinct? The world was very different when the dinosaurs were alive — it was much hotter and wetter. Over time, the world changed and it became harder for dinosaurs to survive. Some scientists believe that an asteroid (a large rock from space) may have hit the earth in the time of the dinosaurs, causing the temperature to drop sudq denly. When big changes like this happen, some creatures are well suited to survive, and others aren’t. Creatures that are not well suited to survive in the world will die out. A creature that is well suited to survive will have lots of babies that will often be even better suited to survive. After the earth cooled during the time of the dinosaurs, most dinosaurs died out. Those few who survived had babies who were smaller, smarter, and quicker. As time went on, those babies had babies of their own, and over the course of thousands of years, these creatures didn’t look like dinosaurs at all anymore. They had changed into new kinds of animals, and these animals were well suited to survive in the changed world. The bible refers to a day because that’s all people could relate to. A day is simply one rotation of the earth. Suppose a day was one rotation of a galaxy that took hundreds and millions of years? All types of creatures change slowly over time. Scientists call this process evolution. Every study of dinosaurs and early mammal’s primitive life shows that living things evolved to fit the condition. --------...

...1. The creationist believes that God created the Earth and all life on it. Creationist also believes that God did this in a single creative event. Creationist supports their argument using the bible. An example is Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The belief systems state that all forms of life existing today were created by the actions of God. Another example is that organisms are created by God and can't produce new forms of organism - only God can do this Evolutionism is the belief that Earth was created in a big bang. The theory of evolution is a philosophical perspective that stems from an atheistic worldview. In 1859 Charles Darwin speculated the idea that how land mammal can turn into a whale. That hypothetical example was used by North American black, which were known to catch insects by swimming in the water with their mouths open. Another example of which Evolutionism believes I that organism can change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioural traits. 2. Scientist claims that dinosaurs lived on this earth over a million years ago. The scientist also thinks that dinosaurs were formed by a different mammal. For example, there believe that amphibian changed into dinosaurs....

Billions of Years vs. Thousands of Years

...The earth is known to be old, but what is the truth of how old is the earth. There is scientific evidence of how old it is, some would say it’s Billions of years and some would say Thousands of years old. There is a lot of factors like rocks layers, plants, animals, sun, moon and many more facts that can predict how many years has the earth been around. But to find the truth if it’s a Billions of years or Thousands of years we would have to compare the two and even look into scientist discovering facts. Or do we go off the what God has created and the Bibles authors? When we read about how or what makes the earth Billions of years? There was a Geologic time scale that was invented in 1800’s. Within this invention, this scale was only to find the geologic ages, with out the information of periods or events. By this we believe the earth was formed about 4 billions years ago. This dates have been proven by analyzing samples of rocks , solar systems, and minerals. Scientist have collaborated and scientifically giving proves of objects, like how old it the oldest rock on earth or the oldest mineral and where did it come from. Material (Oldest earth rock), Age (4.0 billion years), and Methods (radiometric) our how the geologic scale combinations of specific source that tell the what scientist have documented and dated there sources. These are examples of why some assume the age of the earth is a billion years old. One big scientists believer was James Hutton studied...

Evolution Argumentative Essay

...becoming a more complex organism by the process of mutation, wouldn’t there be transitional forms found in fossils? I wish to bring these problems into the light of the Bible and explain how they make more sense in the Christian view. For the first problem, I would like to state that Creationists believe that the flood, and immense catastrophic event, wiped out the population, immediately burying most plants and animals in several sedimentary layers. This idea sounds more logical than the Evolutionary view because it refutes any question of animals moving or decaying: the flood was quick, resulting in the animals having little to no time to escape the ravaging waters and debris. For the second problem, I am simply going to state that, once again according to Science Shepherd Biology, no one has ever discovered a transitional form fossil. The fossil, Archaeopteryx was thought by Evolutionist to be a transitional form-- a Dino-bird! It is the perfect example of a fully functional transitional form: it had bird feathers, perching feet, a breastbone, and a bird-like skull… but, it also had a pair of three fingered claws that resembled reptile claws! However, reptile claws have thumb (1st digit), index (2nd), and middle (3rd) fingers, while bird claws have the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th digits. Obviously, for birds to be dinosaurs it would help if they had the same digits. Another problem with this theory is the fact that reptile lungs, skin, and cold-bloodedness transforming into bird lungs...

...canyon”. According to the evolutionary model, it would have taken millions of years to make the canyon. However, it only took about 40 years for the water to erode the land. A study by the Indiana University Bloomington and Massachusetts Institute of Technology showed that mud will settle even if the current is strong. These two findings are vital for science because many scientists assume many natural features took millions of years to form, while it could have formed in a year. Some scientists see flaws in evolution. They see no possible explanation for life arising from nonlife. They also believe that the terms “Evolution” and “Natural Selection” should not be used interchangeably and that mutations harm evolution, rather than help. Dinosaur soft tissue findings inquire the trusted dating methods and the processes of sedimentation and erosion work. The debate on evolution continues even today with so many scientists taking different perspectives. Only time can decide which way the arguments...

...it will make them seen as hypocrities by outsiders. Many people are under the false belief that all christians believe the world is somewhere between 6000-10000 years old, that dinosaurs never lived among humans, that there was a great flood which wiped the world's species.. This is the distinction between the average christian and a fundamentalalist chrisitian. Fundamentalist christians is a term that was coined during the American Protestant movement in the early 20th century (Dein,2014,para.1). They stress the importance of all context in the bible, both in moral values and its historical context. Fundamentalists can be extremely hostile to modern findings that go against the bible and they label all non-fundamentalists as not true christians (Dein,2014,para.5). While I am a christian, I also take modern idelogies into consideration. In fact, many christians are actually interested in learning aout histories such as different dinosaur bones, and still not lose faith in god. I see the story of the world being created in six days as a metaphorical story with a deeper meaning, not a acoount for what actually happened. Creatiaonlist are actually a minority in the christian world, most chritians are not fundamentalists. A christian can believe in dinosaurs and other forces not mentioned in the bible. Religion

...In my short life on this planet I have come to question things that many take upon blind faith. We all know that we must some day die; yet we continuously deny the forces at work inside ourselves, which want to search out the answers of what may or may not come after. It is far easier for humanity to accept that they will go to a safe haven and be rewarded for their lives with pleasures and fantasies of an unfathomable scale than to question the existence of a supposed omnipotent being. Yet, there are a few of us humans who tend to question the why’s and wherefore’s that society puts forth to us. We question the existence of God, or the creation of mankind rather than blindly accepting faith-filled beliefs we may received from our parents as children. Perhaps it is because we live in a nation filled with many peoples of different beliefs whose Gods are all so varied and different that it is difficult to fathom that they are all the same divine being. It is also plausible that we just have a desire to quench the thirst for knowledge that lies deep within ourselves. As for myself, I cannot believe in a being which created a universe and a multitude of worlds in a rather short period of time then deigns to lower itself into becoming a puppet-master and "pulling the strings" of the Earth and all of the people therein. Since this paper touches upon many scientific terms, I feel that in order for the reader to correctly grasp the...

Creation vs Evolution

...everything descended from a common ancestor. Everything that has life, trees, flowers, bears, fish, humans – they’re all related. Charles Darwin, the founder of evolution, believed strongly in natural selection. He thought that animals, by natural selection, could practically change into a whole new species of animals. Darwin stated that this process takes long periods of time. He said it can’t just happen overnight, rather it takes millions of years for this to take place. Evolution, just like creation, is considered a theory; since it hasn’t been proven to be factual. No one was there when things began to form, or when creatures started to evolve from smaller life forms into bigger things. There were no witnesses when the first dinosaur finished evolving from a smaller reptile or when the first human finished evolving from an ape. Still today, there are plenty of monkeys, gorillas, and apes running...

Young Earth Creationism Research Paper

...While it is in Scripture, and thus aligns with their literal belief of the Bible, it also provides explanation to the entire fossil record; “the creationist view is that every fossilized animal died in the carnage of the Flood” (Hitt, 1996, para. 20). Common thought was that trilobites settled within the sediment and then fossilized. Experiments have shown, however, different results. Rather, when exposed to air, the fossils would rot quickly, rather than the slow fossilization as is commonly believed. In addition, experiments have also shown that if no oxygen were present, then advanced decomposition would take place (Hitt, 1996). The resulting conclusion from these experiments is fossilization occurred quickly based on physical world data and Young Earth Creationists believe it was due to a catastrophic event; they believe it was Noah’s Flood in Genesis 6 (Hitt, 1996). With the fossil question resolved another significant claim made by YEC is that dinosaurs and humans co-existed. In fact, in Job 40 and 41, God speaks of Behemoth and Leviathan who YEC claim could, in fact, be...

Snakes and Evolution

...snakes is unknown. The delicacy of their structure allows for error in fossil records, because many of the first fossil records of snakes are incomplete skeletons. A fact known to be true is that snakes were legged vertebrates. The structure of a snake may be complex, but it is suited for survival. This fact changes factors such as food, shelter and survival, thus the evolution of snakes. Fossil records of snakes date back to the crustaceous period. This era signified the end of dinosaurs but there is evidence of snake life in this era. An interesting fact is that dinosaurs are descendants of cotylosaurs which then produced Diapsids, so snakes are not direct descendants of the dinosaur, but they are evolutionary cousins of Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops. During this era all the continents were together as one, and they were called Pangea. The shuffle of all the continents caused snakes to adapt to the new environmental changes, and strive to survive through natural selection. According to the Bible, snakes were forced to give up their legs and slither on their belly because of mischievous doings. This may be a story or fact but fact is that snakes had legs at one point in time. The first records of legged snakes were found in the Middle Eastern. Another record of a snake was later found in South America, where this snake had two legs. These records presented three types of snakes proving to have had vestigial hind legs. This theory proves that the origin of snakes had legs...

Religion and Science

...Religion and Science REL 212 October 11, 2013 Professor Richardson Religion and Science When viewing Chapter 1’s podcast titled “Scholar Says Religion and Science Can Co-exist”, I agree with the notion that both can coexist. As mentioned by Michel Martin from the Faith Matters show, “religion is about the why. Science may be about the how” (NPR News, 2010). In my opinion, this makes perfect sense. I feel that when a child is born, they are automatically placed in a religion in which their parents believe. At that time, no one could tell the child anything different because that is all they know. As the child experience life as an adolescent, their fate and belief, will be tested giving room for questions to be asked and applied to science. Guest speaker Professor Francisco Ayala mentioned that, “the world is one and the same but what we see through those windows is different” (NPR News, 2010). In the early stages in life, what a person is groomed to believe is what they will continue to believe. Through experiences, a person is given a chance to determine if they will continue to believe what has been instilled in them or take another view in life and see what can be proven through science. People who are open-minded can see many different spectrums of the world. Closed-minded people are not willing to accept the fact that there may be more to what they have been told to believe. When viewing the Chapter 2’s podcast titled “Living Vodou”, I again,...
