...Lotus Riverside Apartments The Lotus Riverside Apartment Complex was a newly built residential complex in Shanghai China that toppled over. It was a 13 story building that tumbled over before the building was all the way complete for move in. The building was built with a car garage attached to the bottom of the complex and the building collapsed while the workers were in process of excavating the area for the garage. The Lotus Riverside Complex failed due to many construction errors such as faulty foundation and improper assessment of environment before construction. The workers while excavating the dirt for the garage dumped the dirt on the opposite side of the building. When it rained the excavation started to fill with water and the pressure from the dirt changed the water table of the ground and created three thousand tons of force along with uneven lateral pressure and thus the pilings in the ground to support the building gave way and snapped off sending this thirteen story high building tumbling right over. The building was surrounded by other buildings but was far enough not to affect any of the other surrounding buildings. Engineers who came to the scene of the fallen building said that if the building would have come in contact with other buildings it could have created a domino effect and wiped out a total of nineteen buildings in a matter of minutes. As i moved I felt sharp pain in my back, I looked to see a large bruise forming from where I must have hit the water when falling out of the plain. I glanced around at the beach, there was a small pool of water farther to the side of me and what looked like a small platform at the end of the beach made from sticks and mud. I pulled myself off the burning sand, and headed towards the dense undergrowth, the deeper I went into the vast jungle the more moist and heavy the air became. After walking for a few minutes I came across a deep trench in the ground covered by fallen trees and scraps of metal. The strong smell of burned leaves filled my nose as i climbed through the scar. Vast shades of green decorated the trees, bushes and ground of the jungle. Small dirt paths led through the thick twisted trees. The canopy of the trees was so dense that only allowed occasional streak of sunlight to touch forest floor. A sweet smell passed through the trees. ...Raelene Akgul (Page 1) My Poetic Self Concept I wrote the self concept poem without much thought and from my opinion, without excellent deliverance, yet it felt good, every word, because as I plunked away at the keyboard I felt this overwhelming pride of who I was as a child and who I am today because of my childhood. Ironically, I also unexpectedly felt a rush of sadness pour through me as I wrote the poem. It was if I had already memorized and recited it a million times before, because it came from my soul so fluid and so real. Thinking wasn't an option for me at that moment, my memories and emotions had all the control. Like a feeling robot typing out the words read aloud from another entity, I felt frozen and captive to thoughts that were racing through my mind and heart. Remembering is so bitter sweet for me. So many powerful memories on so many levels, a weak person might crumble under the pressure of such historical personal experiences. I wallow in them almost as if I need to remember who I am and where I came from. This need I cannot suppress. It seems to be embedded in the very fibers of my whole being, entwined and siblinged with my soul, I feel disconnected, dicontented, and disenchanted daily yet I need to remember as if it were yesterday. Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Since October 1. Hum. Well, I briefly dated/flinged‐‐flung?‐‐a girl named Belle. Basically the first date went fantastic, which introduced super high expectations, that were later not met. It's entirely possible they were impossible to meet. Belle and I are still friends, though it took a couple months. In the last couple days in Rwanda, we headed back toward the airport. On the way, we visited some orphans and widows, doing missionary work like a cop eats a doughnut. The woman my group met with was 51 years old and had an amazing, tragic story. Her husband was a fisherman and died drowning when she was in her early twenties. By then she had two kids, but her parents and parents‐in‐law disowned her. She couldn't afford the house she was living in, and had no where to go, so she lived, quite literally, under a mat for ten years. The neighbors took pity on her kids some nights and gave them food, some of which they smuggled in their shirts, so that's how the woman survived. There was something about her owning the house they'd lived in, but not the land it was on, and the man who owned it refused to part with it. He was planning on leveling the house, but since it was government‐built, it was illegal...
