1, 2, 3, 4, 5, yeah looks like we’re all here. A wise friend of mine once asked me “how much grit do you think you’ve got?” Yeah he was reciting the poem by poet Edgar Albert Guest but that’s besides the point. Our grit is our courage and will to improve; it is the courage and will that we have built starting from Kindergarten and kept pushing forward to face all adversities. So just how much grit did Discovery High School’s class of 2018 have exactly? Considering the fact that we are all sitting here right now, I’d say we have enough grits to feed the entire stadium although I prefer the standard oatmeal. We are now at the end of what was once something new. None of us sitting here today began in Discovery High School, yet each and every …show more content…
There will always be someone better whether academically, athletically, musically. Throughout the years, we have constantly strengthened our areas of knowledge, physique, and talent. This practice most definitely did not make perfect, but this practice did make progress. A progress that will continue to develop as we enter the next chapter of our lives. “This is the end” some of you may think to yourselves. “We made it”, but I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree. This is just the beginning; the beginning of a journey more tasking, more tedious, and more tiring than this previous one. To reach our desired level of success, we’re going to have to push even harder than we did in high school. Remember when we entered high school and we thought about the simpler days of middle school? That cycle is just getting ready to repeat itself now. If you want to be successful, you’ll have to work hard next year -- harder than you’ve ever worked in high school. Many of us will want to quit studying, many of us will want to pack up our bags and go to sleep because of one math problem, many of us will want to lessen our potential because of the other brilliant minds around us, but we can’t let any of that distract us from what brought us to this point right now. You want to be successful. You want to be a winner. In order to reach that level of success you want or in order to become a winner, we need to act instead of think. If you’re struggling with a

Hillary Clinton Commencement Speech Analysis

...On May 31, 1969, Hillary Clinton was the first student to make a commencement speech at her own graduation. Of course, over the past fifty plus years she has accomplished a multitude of firsts but the words spoken here, by twenty-one year old Hillary Rodham, have resonated with me as I evaluate why I too want to attend Wellesley College next fall. She calls, “to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible possible.” I believe this transcends beyond the realm of political science and into neuroscience, astronomy, women’s studies or any of the other over fifty majors offered at Wellesley. For me, the community and atmosphere consisting of a sisterhood of diverse women would be the quintessential environment for me to...

Taking Up the English Course

...should not turn you off to the idea of taking courses outside of your major altogether. In fact, having a rudimentary understanding of certain subjects can become very useful throughout life and it is actually in your best interest to develop, at the very least, basic skills. These will come in handy in terms of your education, career and life. While it may not be possible to take all of the below courses, it is possible to see how students could benefit from the course material within each. Some are included within an undergraduate core curriculum, but varies based on each college. Before you sign up for any courses, take time to consider which you might benefit most from and which fits within your program requirements to count towards graduation. The following list details the recommendations of college courses you should consider taking, regardless of your intended or current major, in order to gain a solid intellectual foundation. Accounting/Finance Most people will loathe the mere suggestion (myself included) but if you plan to have a job, that means you have plans to make money. Moreover, if you plan to make money that means you will have to pay taxes. If you can file your own taxes and manage your own money, you are going to be a lot more self-sufficient than most of your peers (or most of the world, for that matter). Art/Design Perhaps you’re not the world’s most outwardly creative individual. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you cannot appreciate and cultivate an understanding...

Fort Robinson In Morrison's The Bluest Eye

...Fort Robinson remained an operational post, but then became a cavalry remount depot site and a training site for military dogs. The fort also served as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II until it's closing in 1948. (Schubert) author Toni Morrison Toni Morrison, whose real name is Chloe Anthony Wofford, was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. Toni grew up in an integrated neighborhood, making her unaware of the segregation and racism until in her teens. Morrison credits her parents for her passion of reading, music and folklore. Morrison, dedicated to school and her education graduated high school with honors in 1949, before moving on to Howard University. It was there where Toni followed her interest in literature by majoring in English and chose the classics for her minor. Morrison expanded her education by going for her master's degree at Cornell University, following her graduation from Howard in 1953. In 1955, Morrison began teaching English, first at Texas Southern University before returning to Howard University. At Howard University, Morrison met her future husband, Harold Morrison, with whom she had her first child with in 1961. Shortly after, Morrison joins a writers club on campus, where she begins what would become her first novel, The Bluest Eyes. In 1963, Morrison decided to leave Howard University, in order to spend time with her family traveling during the summer. Upon returning to America, her husband decided to move to his birthplace...

...Rachel C. Ancheta BS IT 2C Headgear Speech of Entertain Headgear may be the most important article in the army's uniform. You wear headgear to protect yourself from the rain and hot rays of sunshine, as well as for others to admire your military status. Military designers are tempted again and again to make headgear exclusive, namely, more stylish, trendy, and fashionable. My old patrol cap, the one I am holding in my hand, is my friend's present. It has neither double thick bill nor internal pocket, neither chinstraps nor breathtaking camouflage color by which any desert sniper would figure me out in no time. Well, how comfortable it feels - even with that strong smell of military service! What a feeling! In the army, the patrol cap is one of the three headgear options, together with the beret and the military visor dress hat. When I tried to find secrets of a new ACU patrol cap, it occurred to me that the military value moisture-wicking boots more than headgear. A new patrol cap is described as "an upgraded soft cap with double thick bill, no earflaps and a lower profile." Well, my old patrol cap is soft, too. No wonders, it has known so many laundries. It has no earflaps, either. What about a lower profile or a higher profile? No sweat, if I change it like this and like that . Where's the rub? You may ask me why I argue against a new patrol cap. Because I care for its history and I hate being cheated. My patrol...

Australia

...Land and Climate Area (sq. mi.): 2,988,902 Area (sq. km.): 7,741,220 Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It is just smaller than Brazil and about four-and-a-half times the size of the U.S. state of Alaska. Australia is the only country that occupies a complete continent. It is also the driest inhabited continent in the world. About one-third of its land is desert and another third is composed of poor-quality land. A long chain of mountains, the Great Dividing Range, runs along the Pacific coast. Fertile farmland lies east of the Great Dividing Range, in the southwestern corner of Western Australia, and in the island state of Tasmania. Cattle stations (ranches) reach the edge of the barren interior desert. The famed Australian Outback is an undefined region that encompasses all remote, undeveloped areas. The Outback is seen as a mystical heartland or frontier—a symbol of Australia's strength and independence—where the climate is hot, life is hard, and people are tough, independent, and few. ...TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT URSELF? I'm sure all the above would have helped you. In addition to that I wish add few more things based on my experience while working for a HR consultancy firm. Most of the time the interviewer ask this question to pick up leads about you. You can be 100% sure that whatever you said in Introduction (Abt your skills, Academics etc) will be the topic of discussion later. So you better prepare yourself for a detailed discussion on every word you say at the time of introduction. If you think you are good in a particular area (Example Network security) touch upon that area in the introduction. (While talking about your skillset). By this you are inviting the person to ask you questions in your favorite area. Instead if you give a long and whole history of life, work & skillset. You are in a position of disadvantage by opening up everything. It's a clever act. But belive me it pays off well.  BEST ANSWER: Start with the present and tell why you are well qualified for the position. Remember that the key to all successful interviewing is to match your qualifications to what the interviewer is looking for. In other words you must sell what the buyer is buying. This is the single most important strategy in job hunting.  So, before you answer this or any question it's imperative that you try to uncover your interviewer's greatest need, want, problem or goal.  To do so, make you take these two steps: 1. Do all the homework you can before...

GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery 2 INTRODUCTION Booker T. Washington’s commanding presence and oratory deeply moved his contemporaries. His writings continue to influence readers today. Although Washington claimed his autobiography was “a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment,” readers for nearly a century have found it richly rewarding. Today, Up From Slavery appeals to a wide audience from early adolescence through adulthood. More important, however, is the inspiration his story of hard work and positive goals gives to all readers. His life is an example providing hope to all. The complexity and contradictions of his life make his autobiography intellectually intriguing for advanced readers. To some he was known as the Sage of Tuskegee or the Black Moses. One of his prominent biographers, Louis R. Harlan, called him the “Wizard of the Tuskegee Machine.” Others acknowledged him to be a complicated person and public figure. Students of American social and political history have come to see that Washington lived a double life. Publicly he appeased the white establishment...
