A major form of discrimination against women happens at work. Women have been paid less than men for forever now. Men have been given more occupational opportunities than women have. Discrimination in the workforce is an extremely horrible setback in our society. Men are payed 20% more money than women for doing the exact same jobs. The pay gap varies for each state, some more, some less. The pay gap also varies for different racial groups such as minority women. The article “The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap: AAUW” tells the truth about how Women are, and have been paid less than men for the same jobs. In this article it says, “Did you know that in 2016, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 80 percent …show more content…
It's unjust. Some might say that this is because many women have to care for their children and aren’t able to pursue their careers to their full potential, which is why they are paid less. But this is untrue. Very untrue. That statement would be making the assumption that all women are mothers. But their not. Many women never have children, and are still paid less than men. In the text it also says, “The gap was largest for Hispanic women, who were paid only 54 percent of what white men were paid in 2016.” Can you believe this? Imagine being a Hispanic women. You do the same amount, possibly more work than the white man you work with. You have to work double. Twice as hard. Twice as long, just to be able to make the same amount of money as your white male colleague. Minorities have to work twice as hard to be half as noticed as men. This is extremely discriminatory! Furthermore, women are typically not allowed to have the same positions as men in the workforce. They are not allowed to exceed to their full potential or have the same opportunities as men. A recent controversy surrounding the appointment of a new chairman of the board brought into sharp focus issues regarding discrimination against women in the workplace.” in this article it says, “The choice sparked an unexpected uproar centering on Janet Yellen. Yellen had served as vice chair of the Federal Reserve under Bernanke from 2010 to 2014. Many people considered her the natural choice to succeed Bernanke and become the first woman to head the Federal Reserve. Ezra Klein, writing in the Washington Post on July 19, 2013, noted that Yellen was a "clear front-runner" for Fed chair; but, he said, "she's by no means a sure thing." According to Klein, "One important reason she's not—and I don't know another way to say this—is sexism, as evidenced by the whispering campaign that's emerged against her."” This is unbelievable. Even though Yellen was vice chair for 4 years and she understands the job and the responsibility, she won’t be allowed to be fed chair because she is a women. In recent years, it has been questioned if the way people perceive larger women should be changed by putting more of these women in the media. W. Charisse Goodman’s excerpted chapter titled “One Picture is Worth a Thousand Diets,” from his book The Invisible Women: Confronting Weight Prejudice in America and Meghan Daum’s article titled “Those Unnerving ads using “Real” Women,” published in the Los Angeles Times, both gave me insight to this debate.
