Question 1- Discrimination & Religious Values Women are constantly faced with the struggle of equality in the male dominated workforce. Although many women hold powerful, and high demanding positions, women are still in a constant battle of the never ending race for workforce equality. In today’s world, women are not the typical stay at home mother. Most women juggle raising a family, going to school, and maintaining a full time position, while battling for equality. Women have made tremendous progress in the fight for workplace discrimination. However, many women are still subjected to lesser salaries in comparison to the male employees, sexual harassment, and limitations on job hierarchy. Despite federal and state laws of employment prohibiting discrimination against women, many women are faced with situations similar to the dilemma at the mid-size engineering firm. It is a great advantage and opportunity for the company to pursue the multi-billion dollar contract for engineering services. It will bring in a great deal of profit for the company, which will in terms boost all employees’ salaries. With such a strong connection with Saudi Arabia, the company is at an advantage of getting the contract. However, the fact that gender will hinder the company’s chances of getting the multi-billion contract is a major factor. Respecting Saudi Arabia’s values and only sending men to negotiate the contract will increase the company’s chance of winning the contract, and increase company’s revenues. On the other hand, it will also deny the women employees’ of the company the opportunity to further their careers, increase their salaries, and contribute to the overall success of the company. Because the company is a United States company, this denial of the women employees could potentially ruin the company’s reputation in the United States. The U.S. is a country where equal opportunity is highly favored, and companies that do not adhere to those standards, run the risk of ruining their company. In my opinion, I think it will be in the best interest of the mid-size engineering firm to maintain the firm’s reputation of having a diverse work force, and keep their values of social equality, understanding that females might never be successful because of the cultural norms in the Saudi Arabia society. The firm will be highly reputable for standing strong on their values, for acknowledging and attempting to stop discrimination, rather than disregarding their values simply because of financial benefits. It will greatly improve several other factors within the firm such as, decrease employee turnover, increase productivity, and overall employee morale. The employees of the firm will clearly see that they are truly valued by the firm and will most likely continue to remain loyal to the company. This will in turn reduce the cost of hiring and training new employees, increase attention from stakeholders and simply enhance the firm’s overall reputation as well as brand.

Question 2- Ethics and Philanthropy During difficult economic situations, many companies are faced with the pressure of cutting cost in several areas of the company. It becomes a difficult task to accomplish when the company’s reputation in on the line. In order to keep the profitability of the company, CEO’s must make major decisions to prevent the company from failing financially. Premiere Software LLC is a large company that has an outstanding reputation for philanthropy, and continues to abide by the company’s mission statement, regardless of its substantial lost of revenue. In my opinion, when a company experiencing severe losses of its revenue, philanthropy should stop temporarily, so that the company can acquire back its revenues and then continue to keep its commitment to philanthropy. With such a large company, employees should be the first priority of Premiere Software LLC. Without dedicated and hardworking employees, the company is bound for failure. Since Premiere Software LLC is currently experiencing financial difficulties, charitable donations should be cut from the budget before laying off its employees. Though charitable donations greatly boost the company’s public image, it is not an essential factor for keeping the company successful. Mass employee terminations will have a much greater impact on the company’s public image. Layoffs by the company will not only have a negative impact on employee morale, it will also negatively affect the work ethics of the employees who remain in the company. This is a major risk that every company should avoid at all cost. Donations are an expendable part of the company’s budget and can be taken away and added at any given time the company sees fit. In order to keep up with the mission statement, the money given to charity should be lessened and other forms of donations such as giving away old computers and printers to charities should be considered. Since has strong commitment to philanthropy, all donation cuts should not be absolute or even permanent. By not having a mass employee terminations, Premiere Software LLC will eventually reach the point when it is more financially secure to reinstate the old donations as it has done in the past. This is a solution will not only help the company’s public image, but will increase financial revenues. By doing so, the company will still be in adherence to its mission statement without drawing negative attention from the media and the public.

...One observation I made about the authors response to prejudice in “Just Walk On By” was that the author, Staples, seemed accustomed to the racial discrimination he often faced. He started to view these incidents of prejudice as quite commonly occurring. A second observation about the authors response to prejudice is that he chooses, perhaps unconsciously, to remain a shadow to the subject. Staples states, Timid, but a survivor. Lastly in “Why Looks are the Last Bastion of Discrimination”, Rhodes seems to feel that appearance related bias exacerbates disadvantages based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation and class. She doesn’t seem to understand why not simply ban prejudice based on appearance.
