...Development of Conservation in Theory and Practice In considering the issue of wildlife conservation, a link to development rises quickly to the surface. After all, the animals seemingly considered the most prized by the collective popular consciousness, such as primates, occur predominantly in tropical areas of the world considered by most to be “underdeveloped.” According to the United Nations Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the rate of growth in developed countries, mostly those located in Europe and America, between 2005 and 2050 is expected to remain relatively minimal, while the population of the developing world is projected to substantially increase, from 5.3 billion to 7.8 billion, over the same period of time (United Nations Population Division 2005, vi). This includes a more drastic increase in the world’s 50 least developed country (mostly located in Africa and Asia), where the number of inhabitants is projected to swell from 0.8 billion to 1.7 billion over the same period. As such, in putting together a theory for development more broadly and conservation more specifically, it is crucial that the link between societal growth and natural resource and wildlife degradation be explored. Some years ago my research colleagues and I invited Moana Jackson to participate in a project on genetic engineering. Our first question for him was along the lines of whether Mäori had a ‘unique perspective’ on genetic engineering. It was then that we received our lesson about the use of the word ‘perspective’ (Cram, Pihama & Philip-Barbara, 2000:66-67). Moana said that, ‘The word perspective to me is interesting. It assumes that there is something that is a given upon which Mäori can be expected to have a valid point of view. The moment you do that you situate the Päkehä model as the truth; and you ask Mäori to give a view on it. I think there are Mäori truths and they exist independently of whatever Päkehä view as reality or truth and to seek a Mäori perspective is to legitimate the Päkehä perspective on the issue. So to ask for a Mäori perspective on say the use of land is to validate the Päkehä concepts of property and seek to fit a Mäori view of that within it. The differences in how each theory addresses ethics and morality along with a personal experience will be addressed to help explain the relationship between virtue, values, and moral concepts as they relate to one of the three theories. A personal experience would be my character results from the University of Phoenix web based Ethics Game called the Ethical Lens Inventory. I was assigned to play the Ethics Game-Ethical Lens Inventory for class to determine which ethical perspective best categorized me. The results were surprisingly quite accurate in describing my character especially after reading the definitions of each lens and found that I fell into the Rights and Responsibilities Lens. There are four lenses in the ethics game, the Rights and Responsibilities Lens, Relationship Lens, Results Lens and Reputation Lens. Three of the four lenses will be covered in the paper as the Rights and Responsibilities Lens and Reputation lens are both categorized into two different views of the deontological theory.
