...Caio Cezar Lima Toth Dr. Harmon MNGT 3370.793 March 12, 2014 Discussion Case I – A Brawl in Mickey’s Backyard 1. What is the focal organization in this case, and what is the main issue it faces? The focal organization in this case involves SunCal’s plan of building around “1.500 condominiums, with 15 percent of the units aside for the below-market-rate rental apartments.” This idea would help many people that were living in that area, including Disney’s workers that could not afford the high renting rates to keep their houses, families and current jobs. However, even having the support of many citizens, the developer (SunCal) also suffered a great opposition, especially from Disney, since the 26-acre that the company arranged to buy was seen as a possible site for expansion of the resort/park. An illustration of this objection is when one of Disney’s representatives argues that “Anaheim and Orange County have to address the affordable housing issue, but Anaheim has to protect the resort area. It’s not an either/or.” 2. Who are the relevant market and nonmarket stakeholders in this situation? * Market Stakeholders * Disney * SunCal * Disney’s Employees * Nonmarket Stakeholders * Anaheim Council * Anaheim Community (citizens, protestors) * Disney’s Employees P.s. Disney’s Employees are part of both kind of stakeholder since according to the book “ Market Stakeholders are those that engage in economic transaction with the company…Employees...

The Focal Organization is SunCal and it is from their perspective the analysis is conducted. The main issue that SunCal faces is to go through city council to get approval to build below market-rate rental apartments in an area where Disneyland had earmarked for future theme park expansion. 2. Who are the relevant Market and nonmarket stakeholders in this situation? The relevant market stakeholders are employees, Disney and customers of Disney. The relevant nonmarket stakeholders are communities, the general public, & business support group “Save Our Anaheim Resort District”. 3.What are the various stakeholders’ interests? Please indicate if each stakeholder is in favor, or opposed to, SunCal’s proposed development. Employees of Disney are underpaid and need affordable housing near Disneyland. They are in favor of SunCal’s proposal. The Disney Company is not in favor because it will prevent future expansions, which can generate revenues and profits. Disney customers would favor SunCal’s proposition because of how Disney treats its employees. The community of Anaheim would favor SunCal because of residence building. The public would favor SunCal because it ultimately helps the underpaid labor force who can’t afford to live near their jobs. Business Support Groups would not favor SunCals’ proposition because they want to still thrive from...

...Brawl in Mickey's Backyard Brian Caywood BUS250: Corporate and Social Responsibility Instructor: Jodi Feikema July 13, 2015 This is a story that weighed the needs of the community against the largest business to see which was deemed more important people or money. SunCal and Disney put themselves into a challenging situation in trying to settle a dispute over land that was available near Disney’s park in Anaheim, California. SunCal wanted to build affordable housing for the local populace. The Disney Corporation also wanted the same land so that it may utilize it in case of future expansion; Disney also claimed that the housing would be an eyesore that would diminish the magic of the Disney experience. This dispute was fought in the public but eventually would be decided by The Chamber of Commerce of Anaheim, California. The market and non-market shareholders in this dispute are both equally important. For Disney the expansion would add jobs and much needed revenue to the local economy as well as stop what it thought would be an eyesore. On the other Disney, a company that makes billions of dollars every year bringing the innocence and magic of the Disney experience, has to take into account that if the dispute is deemed mean spirited or immoral it could have a devastating effect on the finances of the company. For SunCal it was fighting for affordable housing for area residents many of whom were Disney employees. Many of the employees have to travel long distance...

...Review: A Brawl in Mickeys Back Yard Balancing the responsibilities of a business and how its actions affect its employees, customers, and business partners can be tricky at time and not fair to all. In the case of Brawl in Mickeys Backyard (Lawrence & Weber 2011), two corporations, Walt Disney and SunCal, are battling for prime real estate in downtown Anaheim. Both companies want this land for different projects, but at the same time, have the same interest to make money for their company. The main focal company in this debate is SunCal, while Disney is considered a company, they are looked at as a stakeholder because stakeholder refers to a person or group that is affected by an organization’s decision or operations (Lawrence & Weber 2011), while at the current time (with no housing being built yet) Disney is merely a nonmarket stakeholders. This of course could change if housing is built and Disney and Suncal, now operating inside of the resort area, are conducting business with each other. Do to the fact that no houses were built all parties involved are considered nonmarket stakeholders to SunCal. These nonmarket stakeholders are Disney employees who stand to gain from the subsidized lower income housing. The city of Anaheim, who’s choice to change the zoning of the resort area to allow for personal family dwellings or can choose to deny the request. As well as other companies in the resort area who would lose building space as a result of the housing development...

...A Brawl in Mickey’s Backyard Donna Ralston BUS 250 Corporate and Social Responsibility Instructor: Amy Goffinet September 29, 2014 In the study case of “A Brawl in Mickey’s Backyard” there were issues between a development company called SunCal and the world famous Disney Land Resort. SunCal wanted to develop affordable housing so that the employees of Disneyland could be closer to work and not have to pay an outrageous amount of money for housing close by which Disneyland opposed. When billion dollar companies have employees that make low income, should the companies be helpful to ensure that their employees have affordable housing close to their place of employment? In this paper I will discuss this as well as determine who the relevant market and nonmarket stakeholders are in this situation? I will also state what possible solutions to this dispute I think might emerge from dialogue between SunCal and its stakeholders? This case study was quiet interesting to me. Disneyland makes billions of dollars a year due to their employee’s hard work and determination. According to our text; “Walt Disney, the company’s founder, had famously spelled out the resort’s vision when he said “I don’t want the public to see the world they live in while they’re in Disneyland. I want them to feel they’re in another world.” (Lawrence, A. T. & Weber, J. 2011) Because of this so called “vision” Walt Disney had, affordable housing could not be built close by the resort by SunCal. Of course...

...Andrew Griffin 2/8/16 Dr. Lee Food Memoir She handed me a yellow piece paper. Crumbled up and then flattened-out again, folded every which way with blue lines now faded from all the wear and tear. On it, looked like what I can only describe as chicken scratch, in two different colored ink and even pencil marking hieroglyphs. “Andrew I need you to get everything on this list as soon as possible so go right now” she said as she frantically loads more potatoes into the oven. “Mom, the party start in like three hour and this list isn’t even in English”. She puts down the avocado she was hastily gutting like a fish and snatches the list from my hand and begins rambling off indigents ranging I have never heard off as I smash my fingers into my phone’s keyboard in a panic to copy them as these key items would not be repeated. “Mom I have no idea what a leek even looks like” I say to her bewildered at the task at hand “Andrew I don’t have time for this just go now and find them” she says as she slices a cucumber. My mother’s cooking is different in the sense that there is not a rhyme or reason for what is made. From Monday’s Homestyle chicken coated in cornflakes from top to bottom for a savor crunch in every bite dipped in country gravy to Tuesday’s mouthwatering ribs that we tear at like carnivorous beast with our hands and mouths thrashing at the meat till only bones remain, one can never guess or understand the high order or power of my mother cooking process. ...market and nonmarket) stakeholder groups influencing or influenced by SunCal's plans to develop a 26-acre site in the resort district. (5 marks) Primary Stakeholders (also known as market stakeholders) are defined as those that engage in economic transactions with the company as it carries out its primary purpose of providing society with goods and services. Secondary Stakeholders (also known as nonmarket) stakeholders are defined as people and groups who – although they do not engage in direct economic exchange with the firm – are nonetheless affected by or can affect its actions. As previously mentioned, primary (market) stakeholders are groups that are directly involved in the economic transactions of a business. In the case of A Brawl in Mickey’s Backyard there are a number of primary stakeholders beginning with the SunCal development group and Disneyland theme parks. These primary stakeholders are also the primary organizations involved with the development dispute in Orange County. Both of these groups are primary stakeholders because the outcome on whether or not directly affects their businesses. If the development is allowed to go through, then the vision of Disneyland where they “don’t want the public to see the world they live in while they’re in Disneyland” is compromised, and if the development is halted then the SunCal business is affected because of a lost opportunity. Additional primary stakeholders in this case are the workers at Disneyland/Their Union who...

...ISNEY R ESORTS – C ASE S TUDY What markets are the Disney resorts and parks aiming for? Disney not only want to attract children and families, they are also aiming for those people who still want to feel the child in themselves. But since Disney also provides hotels, cruise ships and other entertainments, they attract a wide range of customers. Was Disney’s choice of the Paris site a mistake? In my opinion it was not a mistake that Disney entered the European market, it was maybe just too early that they built a resort in Europe especially in Paris. I think it would have been better to open a resort in a different country, as French people are not very open minded and react negatively to a “new American project”. What aspects of their parks’ design did Disney change when it constructed Euro Disney? Ø Europeans would respond to a “Wild West” image...
