Distracted driving impacts anyone who drives or cares about someone who drives.
I live in Northern Virginia and the traffic here, like most metropolitan areas, is terrible and growing worse each year. The Northern Virginia driving population increases every year resulting from business and housing growth. Each year also brings a wave of new teenagers into the driving population. Each day during my typical commute one hour commute, I observe drivers text messaging on their cell phones. A recent survey conducted by Journey Safe, a safe driving advocacy organization, found that over 90% of teens admit to doing multiple tasks while driving, such as talking on the cell phone, eating, playing loud music, channel surfing, using mp3 players, and interacting with friends in the car even when they admit they find it distracting. The same survey results indicate that an overwhelming 75% of teens admitted to text messaging while driving (JourneySafe, 2007). Text messaging while driving is a growing trend and is becoming one of the nation’s top killers. In 2011, 1.3 billion (nearly 25% of all) automobile accidents resulted from texting while driving and 11 teens died everyday from texting while driving (Textinganddrivingsafety.com, 2013). However, only thirty-nine (39) states plus DC prohibit all drivers from text messaging (Distraction.gov 2012). Quite frankly, distracted driving is a dangerous reality and it makes driving risky business for everyone on the roads. Americans should support the standardization and enforcement of regulations regarding the use of cell phones while driving and make a personal commitment to not drive distracted in order to reduce accidents and save lives.

Distracted Driving

...Distracted Driving Sometimes in life “sorry” can become a magic word and fix everything, then there are times that saying “sorry” undoes nothing. Will saying “sorry” help when you crash your parent’s car, because you are too busy looking at your phone? What about when you kill someone’s child because you’re too busy talking to your friend and run a stop light? Will you say “sorry” to the kid’s parents and expect everything to be okay? Saying “sorry” cannot begin to fix some things and preventing those from happening by acting responsibly in the first place is the best you can do. I like the introduction technique with the hypothetical questions. However, you now need to transition into your thesis or central claim, and that central claim needs to come here, at the end of the intro paragraph. Ninety percent of car accidents are caused by human error – driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, speeding recklessly, changing lanes without signaling, passing through red lines, and probably most known of all: distracted driving OK, first of all, don’t begin body paragraphs with statistics. Rarely should you do this. Instead, remember that I want your body paragraphs to begins with subclaims. Secondly, where did you get this statistic? This is not a research paper (you’ll be taught proper research in Composition II). For now, we want you to avoid research sources except your interviews. . Cell Phones and Car(Unsafe Combination

...Reuters, from 2001 to 2007, drivers, who were either texting or talking on their cell phone, killed an estimated 16,000 people. I, for one, think it’s a shame that so many deaths happened in that small amount of time because of something so careless. Cell phone use anywhere can be distracting, but driving while using your cell phone is potentially life threatening. More people would benefit by acknowledging this sad truth. Today I’m going to give my argument on why cell phone use while driving needs to be banned. A few reasons, but not all are; using a cell phone takes the driver's attention away from driving, causes you to be impaired both mentally, as well as physically, and can cause accidents or even death. A driver’s attention is taken away from driving when they use their cell phone. That’s a proven fact. Statistics, on the Official US government website for distracted driving, show that drivers talking on cell phones were eighteen percent slower to react to break lights. If that statistic isn’t scary enough for you, they also give one more that definitely got my attention. Sending and receiving texts takes the driver’s eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. That’s the equivalent of driving a football field at fifty-five miles per hour, blind. If that’s not proof enough for you, check out these facts. A driver talking on a cell phone is as impaired as a driver with a .08 blood-alcohol level. However, a driver who is texting is as impaired as a driver with a .16 blood-alcohol level...

Think Twice About Texting and Driving

...Texting and Driving “In 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver” (Distracted Driving). Many people do not realize that texting and driving causes so many injuries and deaths. People believe that looking down at a phone for three seconds is okay and will not cause harm. They are wrong; texting while driving causes more accidents than other distractions while driving. There are also laws that forbid the use of a cell phone while operating a vehicle. Texting and driving is an action that kills more people than expected. Due to the lack of concentration on the first-hand action; a slowed reaction is brought upon the driver. Texting and driving is a problem because of the delayed reaction time of someone who is driving a car. “Using a cell phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent” (2009, University of Utah). Driving while texting is similar to driving while intoxicated because of the delayed reaction time, but texting while driving is much worse. When a person is driving under the influence of alcohol, they are, for the most part, still focusing on the road; whereas a person who is texting is paying more attention to their phone than on the road. Therefore, most accidents are caused from texting while driving. When going...

Although some incorrect beliefs are harmless, those related to driving can kill. Here are four driving misconceptions that make you a danger to yourself and others on the road: Distracted Driving Is a Teen Problem The first step in overcoming a driving safety problem, is knowing that one exists. Thinking that only teens have this problem implies that you don't because you aren't a teen. Smartphones and Driving-It Can Kill

...Amy Written Communications Practice Essay Assignment Smartphones and Driving-It Can Kill Who would have thought that one small piece of technology would cause so much havoc and change in one person’s life. “Computers” have become a completely new form to the older generations, while smartphones are practically raising younger generations. Smartphones are, in most ways, conditioning our brains to rely on their use. What most people are not seeing, even with the evidence in front of their eyes, is that this new technology is slowing killing us as human beings. One of the things killing us is those people who are texting while they are behind the wheel of a car. Car phones were first introduced in 1946 and over time, have quickly developed technologically. They have developed so much as to having a computer in the palm of your hand. What happens when you start playing with your computer? You quickly get distracted and you focus intently on the subject at hand. This has become a much larger problem now that computers are small enough to carry in one hand. According to psychologist David Greenfield, founder of The Center for Internet and Technology Addiction and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut, "Younger people have essentially been weaned on technology. They don't know the existence of life without their cellphones or smartphones; they see technology as an extension of themselves." We’ve become so dependent on our devices that we are...

Distracted Driving

...Gabrielle King English 1101 Instructor Bennett Tuesday, December 8th Distracted Driving You feel the buzzing in your pocket and pull out your cell phone to respond to the text. While looking down, you run into a few people. After a few quick apologies, you continue on your way. You are talking on your phone in the hallway, you bump into something and start saying “Sorry” but it happens to be a trash can. Something catches your eye on a shelf at the grocery store and you run into someone. All you have to give is a few more quick apologies. Sometimes in life, “sorry” acts as a magic word and can mend everything, and then there other times, “sorry” undoes nothing. Will “sorry” help when you crash your parents’ car because you needed to respond to a text message? What about when you kill someone’s child because you had a conversation going on the phone and ran a stop sign? Will you say “sorry” to that kid’s parents and expect things to get better? And if you had an accident because of the distraction of talking to your friend in the passenger seat, what would you say to her if you got to see her again? “Sorry you had to go to my funeral”? “I apologize for making you live with that horrible memory for the rest of your life”? “Sorry cannot begin to fix some things and preventing those things from happening by acting responsibly is the best you can do. Texting While Driving

...TEXTING IS TODAY’S MOST DEMANDED FORM OF COMMUNICATION AND WHILE SOME MAY THINK THAT IT IS JUST A SIMPLE TASK, THE ACT OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING CAN ALSO BE ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS AND POSSIBLY FATAL FORMS OF COMMUNICATION IN THE WORLD TODAY. FIRST LET ME GIVE THE PROPER DEFINITION OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IS THE ACT OF COMPOSING, SENDING, READING OR SENDING A TEXT MESSAGE, READING OR SENDING EMAILS OR MAKING OTHER SIMILAR USE OF THE WEB ON A MOBILE PHONE WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE. WE ALL HAVE SEEN THE COMMERCIALS WHERE A DRIVER TAKES HIS EYES OFF THE ROAD TO READ A TEXT MESSAGE AND IN AN INSTANT THE DRIVER’S LIFE IS SUDDENLY CHANGED BY A HORRIFIC ACCIDENT ALL DUE TO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. I KNOW THAT I DON’T EVER WANT TO THINK ABOUT BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT THAT WOULD TAKE THE LIVES OF OTHER MOTORISTS OR PEDESTRIANS. AND I’M PRETTY SURE THAT NONE OF YOU GUYS WANNA WAKE UP EVERY MORNING WITH THE FEELING OF KNOWING THAT YOU WERE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING AN INNOCENT PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR FOR THE REMAINDER OF THEIR LIVES OR EVEN SHORTENING THE LIFE OF A SMALL CHILD ALL BECAUSE YOU DECIDED TO TEXT WHILE DRIVING. USING A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH BUT TEXTING WHILE DRIVING WILL HAVE THE EFFECTS THAT ARE 100X MORE DEVASTATING. ACTUALLY RESEARCH SHOWS THAT 5 SECONDS IS THE AVERAGE TIME YOUR EYES ARE OFF THE ROAD WHILE TEXTING, AND WHEN TRAVELING AT 55 MPH THAT’S ENOUGH TIME TO COVER THE ENTIRE LENGTH...

...“A witness says the driver of a pickup truck collided with a church minibus in rural Texas, killing 13 people, acknowledged he had been texting while driving” I listen to this as I sit on my phone while my mom watches the news. I look up to see an image of two cars completely destroyed. “Witnesses say that the driver was erratically driving across the road”. The death of these 13 people was caused because of the choices of someone else, texting while driving, something that is legal in Texas and three other states allowing the freedom of deadly crashes like this to occur.
