Distracted driving is a big problem in the United States, and people are more likely to get in an accident if they are distracted. Studies show that texting while driving impairs normal driving. In 1980 Candy Lightner was drunk driving on night and she killed a 13 year old girl, and she later said that the girl she killed was her daughter. Candy lightner also later said “ After the crash there is an impact.” People are more likely to get in an accident if they are distracted, but though scientists are not able to find out if all car accidents are from distracted driving. Though using your phones while you are driving is dangerous people still need it to call or text for emergencies. Oprah's stance on texting and driving is she thinks that it is bad. Though she also said that people do sometimes need to reach other people for emergencies. Jordyn Wieber is also with Oprah and thinks that texting and driving is bad. But she also says that a phone is needed to be as a GPS. In the year 2011 23% of all car accidents involved the use of a cell phone. The minimal amount of time it takes for your attention to be taken away from the road is 5 seconds which is equal to driving the length of a football field traveling at 55 mph. Statistics show that you are 23 times more likely to get in a car crash and 2.8 times if you are dialing a number, also 1.3 more likely if you are talking or listening and finally 1.4 more likely if you are reaching for a device. 13% of teens at the ages between 18-20 admit to texting or talking before the crash. An average of 1,600,000 accidents in the U.S are due to using your phone while driving. Also an average of 11 teens die everyday from using a phone while driving. Using your cell phone while driving is the number one distraction by teen drivers. Using your phone while driving is the same as driving blind for 5 seconds.
