E. Plurbis Unum. This is the motto our founding fathers came up with for our country. (Harvey & Allard) With this our country recognizes the diversity of the communities that we live in. So therefore, managers in a professional business setting should also recognize this phrase when they are making decisions on hiring. The population is diverse, and with that diversity come different culture, ethnicity and gender. These three categories are also discriminatory categories that employers use when hiring.
Culture has brought many changes across many different people--for example, mathematics has become a world-wide form that started with the ancient Hindus (Harvey & Allard). Culture can bring different opinions into a workplace that provides a different insight possibly with improvement to a work environment. “Some cultural features were not only different from others, but better than others, so therefore people from all cultures have repeatedly chosen to abandon some feature of their own culture in order to replace it with something from another culture implies that the replacement served their purposes more effectively” (Harvey & Allard). With the constant changing in culture, having a diverse culture in the workplace will provide different opinions and insights.
“An ethical approach would consider judgments about right and wrong, good and bad, what ought to be in our world, definition criteria suggested by Laura Hartman (2002)” (Harvey & Allard). It is good to use an ethical approach in businesses because it can lead to a decision rather than an outcome. (Harvey & Allard) With an ethical approach a business can value a person’s difference in opinion using Brady’s ethical theory chart which includes faith, hope, and charity. Without an ethical approach, there would be minimal differences in opinion and no room for a change/improvement in a business.
Gender is used to define different careers in our world today. For example construction is a male dominated career, but if you were to add a female into the she may be able to help with the design part of the build or even just with building, some women are more hands on with what they do and would succeed more in a world of construction. Another example is a male nurse. There are few and far between, but a male nurse is able to add to this female dominated career because they can help with lifting and with belligerent patients. Male nurses are also able to better relate with male patients at times. The qualities that a person has should not be defined by whether they are male or female but rather by how well their qualities stand out and how well they perform in their roles at their jobs.
When working with the ball and sock activity, I found this a little difficult to do because of the fact that I am left handed. I write with my left hand, however for most other things, I am right handed. When I was eight years old, I broke my left arm—this was the time that I was learning to write in school. My parents and teachers looked at this as an opportunity to change which hand I would write with so that I could be right handed like everyone else. I still continued to use my casted left arm when I was completing my school work, and still to this day continue with my left hand. I find it funny at least in my work environment, I have more left handed co workers than I have right handed. In this aspect I find that the discrimination with right or left -handed makes no difference in how you perform your job, only how people look at you.
In conclusion, using culture, ethics and gender can help round out a business and make it a better place to work. Diversity in a work environment helps the business to grow and gains more insight, opinions, and different skills. For a business to discriminate will only hurt the business in the end.
