...Paola Capellan PI: 2647577 Assignment 2 – Chapters 5 thru 9 Journal CHAPTER 5 1. If students sit in the same classroom, read the same assignments, and hear the same lectures, are they all receiving the same education? Might these students interpret the same lesson differently because of the social worlds in which they live? Page 133 I believe that even though students have the same opportunities and environment in the same exact classroom, they are all still not receiving the same education. This all depends on their mental capacities, the amount of attention they give, and if they understand the assignments and lectures. Everyone can have different experiences and take in different information even though being in the same scenarios. I do believe that because of diverse social worlds, people are influenced by their cultures and in turn may interpret information differently. 2. One of the challenges confronting doctors is to open up lines of communication with their patients. One doctor laments, “People put us on a pedestal. They see us as angels, and this makes communication difficult. They don’t ask questions or express their concerns. But we make mistakes like anyone else.” In communicating with their patients, what is one specific thing doctors might do to level the playing field and promote more open, honest communication? Page 136 To level the playing field, doctors can talk to their patients and effectively explain how their “power”, “status” or title doesn’t...

Influences of organizational culture As “a set of shared value, norms, standards for individual and expectations” within an organization, organizational culture holds together a group of people with similar attitudes or personalities. Benjamin Schneider pointed that these similar employees are more likely to stay than those who are dissimilar in personalities. Also, Based on the Hawthorne effect, the bank set up a top management commitment to keep employees happy, which is based on appreciating diversity, so as...

...E. Plurbis Unum. This is the motto our founding fathers came up with for our country. (Harvey & Allard) With this our country recognizes the diversity of the communities that we live in. So therefore, managers in a professional business setting should also recognize this phrase when they are making decisions on hiring. The population is diverse, and with that diversity come different culture, ethnicity and gender. These three categories are also discriminatory categories that employers use when hiring. Culture has brought many changes across many different people--for example, mathematics has become a world-wide form that started with the ancient Hindus (Harvey & Allard). Culture can bring different opinions into a workplace that provides a different insight possibly with improvement to a work environment. “Some cultural features were not only different from others, but better than others, so therefore people from all cultures have repeatedly chosen to abandon some feature of their own culture in order to replace it with something from another culture implies that the replacement served their purposes more effectively” (Harvey & Allard). With the constant changing in culture, having a diverse culture in the workplace will provide different opinions and insights. “An ethical approach would consider judgments about right and wrong, good and bad, what ought to be in our world, definition criteria suggested by Laura Hartman (2002)” (Harvey & Allard). ...

...Examining WalMart for Lessons in Managing Diversity Kaplan University Introduction The purpose of this paper is to analyze how WalMart, the world’s largest employer is managing diversity. In the case study, WalMart is facing a class action lawsuit from a former female employee who feels she was the victim of gender discrimination. WalMart however, has received many accolades for it’s diverse workplace and internal growth opportunities. From reading and evaluating this case I intend to learn management theories and practices in building a diverse workplace. Why it’s important to have diversity in leadership and how to integrate a collaborative workplace. Analysis WalMart has been the focus of many lawsuits in the past ranging from discrimination to its most recent suit regarding minimum wage. Yet according to Daft (2012) “The retailers 1.4 million U.S. hourly associates earn $11.75 per hour on average. (p. 384). So there is obviously a vast discrepancy about who is benefiting on the high end of these wages. The Supreme Court has since dismissed the class action lawsuit of Dukes v. WalMart. The case was the largest sex discrimination lawsuit in history representing 1.6 million female employees. However, the court did not decide on whether or not discrimination took place. WalMart has also been sued for religious discrimination and agreed to pay an employee $70,000 for being fired because he observed the Sabbath. Based on these lawsuits my observation is...

...Running head: THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY IN THE WORKFORCE 1 The Importance of Diversity in the Workforce Michael O. Russell Southern New Hampshire University THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERISTY IN THE WORKFORCE 2 Abstract The basis of this study is to describe the importance of having a diverse age difference in today’s workforce. It will also describe how age discrimination, in particular with elderly people, presents challenges to organizations. It will also describe what policies and practices management my use to alleviate these challenges, and how continuity in the workforce is important for future generations of workers as the workforce continues to age. THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY IN THE WORKFORCE 3 The Importance of Diversity in the Workforce With an uncertain economy and the rising cost of living, more and more senior personnel who are eligible for retirement are staying in the workforce instead of retiring at the traditional age that generations before them did. This is not just happening in the United States, it is happening all around the world. As Robbins stated, “U.S. legislation has, for all intents and purposes, outlawed mandatory retirement. Most workers today no longer have to retire at age 70, and 62 percent of those aged 45 to 60 plan to delay retirement” (Robbins, pg 46). The fact that people are foregoing the traditional age of retirement forces management to focus on ways to create a diverse atmosphere...

...Affirmative Action: Bigger than Diversity Is affirmative action bigger than diversity? This is the question that comes to my mind since there has been much debate on whether or not Affirmative action laws are still needed. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in October on Fisher v. University of Texas, a case that could overturn or uphold the 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger ruling that found affirmative-action policies to be constitutional. (Nhan, 2012) Of course it’s still needed and it’s constitutional since it reinforces the Constitution that is based on all men being created equal. And without this reinforce able law I don’t believe that the Constitution will hold true. And if Affirmative action was not still needed then why is there so much debate about it. Affirmative action has gone way beyond diversity, it’s all about power. This leads me to my first point when affirmative action was put in place white America lost their control and now they are trying to do whatever it takes to get that control back. One of the biggest blows to this countries ego was when the first black president was put into office, this really struck nerve. Finally, getting rid of affirmative action is just another way to shake up the confidence of minorities and women so that they break them down to where society feels they should be. This is just a fraction of why I feel affirmative action is still needed and society is just playing the part until someone makes the under minding decision...

...Introduction Attention grabber. A tremendous challenge in organizations is learning how to efficiently diversify the workplace (Hostager & De Meuse, 2008). As we continue to emerge from the global recession the marketplace continues to remain extremely competitive. Even within this contentious environment, however, one could say organizations have become increasingly open minded about diversity. Competition is coming from all over, and because of this, organizations have to become more resourceful and seek for competitive advantages. Diversity has now become essential for management in order to ensure success. Diversity brings forth more creativity and it can have a positive effect on the way individuals work. People bring their cultural principles with them to work so it is important to identify culture orientation. However, because diversity is still somewhat a challenge, managers need to teach their employees as well as themselves the skills and abilities needed to work in a multiethnic environment. (Green, Lopez, Wysocki, & Kepner) This paper will highlight ways to create and maintain a diverse workforce, as well as the benefits and challenges of diversity as well as equal employment opportunity programs. Background For a long time “diversity has been one of the most controversial and least understood topics”. (Rohini, 2008 ) A recent survey conducted among human resources (HR) and diversity practitioners examined how they defined diversity (Society for Human Resources...

...IMPROVING INTELLIGENCE THERE ARE 8 TYPES OF INTELLIGENCE , ACCORDING TO HOWARD GARDNER. THE MAIN IDEA TO IMPROVE THE INTELLIGENCE LEVEL IS TO BELIVE IN DIVERISTY OF RESOURECS OF INTELLIGENCE . IN ADDITION, TO IMPRESS THESE TYPES AS DIALY BASIS AND APPLY IT PRACTIALY . IF WE BELIVE IN THE INTELLIGENCE CAN NOT BE GAINED,AND IT IS GENETIC , DETERMINED AT BIRTH, WE WILL BURRY OUR MIND AND NEGLECT IT. THERE ARE SOME STEPS TO HELP US TO TURN THESE THEORIES INTO PRACTICIAL WAYS: SEEK NOVELTY- CHALLENGE YOURSELF- THINK CREATIVELY- DO THINGS THE HARD WAY- NETWORK- ANY ONE OF THESE THINGS BY ITSELF IS GREAT, BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO FUNCTION AT YOUR ABSOLUTE COGNITIVE BEST, YOU SHOULD DO ALL FIVE, AND AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. IN FACT, IF YOU ADOPT THESE AS FUNDAMENTAL GUIDELINES, YOU WILL BE PERFORMING AT YOUR PEAK ABILITY, SURPASSING EVEN WHAT YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE CAPABLE OF—ALL WITHOUT ARTIFICIAL ENHANCEMENT. TO SUM UP INTELLIGENCE ISN’T JUST ABOUT HOW MANY LEVELS OF MATH COURSES YOU’VE TAKEN, HOW FAST YOU CAN SOLVE AN ALGORITHM, OR HOW MANY VOCABULARY WORDS . IT’S ABOUT BEING ABLE TO APPROACH A NEW PROBLEM, RECOGNIZE ITS IMPORTANT COMPONENTS, AND SOLVE IT—THEN TAKE THAT KNOWLEDGE GAINED AND PUT IT TOWARDS SOLVING THE NEXT, MORE COMPLEX PROBLEM. IT’S ABOUT INNOVATION AND IMAGINATION, AND ABOUT BEING ABLE TO PUT THAT TO USE TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. THIS IS THE KIND OF INTELLIGENCE THAT IS VALUABLE, AND THIS IS THE TYPE OF INTELLIGENCE WE SHOULD BE...

...prosthetics around the eyes. Although most roles of differently raced characters than white are taken by white men it can still be done with women also. We see this in the film “Aloha” which has Emma Stone cast as Allison Ng a half Hawaiian and chinese character even though she is clearing a blonde white woman, this taking the role from asian actors who could furthur their career and actually become bankable actors which Hollywood uses as an excuse constantly. We see this also with the classic “West Side Story” which focusing on the forbidden love of a man from the jets and a woman from the sharks who is Puerta Rica but suprisingly she is played by Natlie Woods a white woman, another role taken by an actress who could have stood for diveristy in film. This is major problem in Hollywood and will continue unless they listen to audiences and fans of film. They must diversify and create roles for actors of many ethnic backgrounds to take and build careers upon. Representation matters and we only see white faces potraying characters that could have been played by an actual person of color it would raise hope and joy to see people like us as more than background characters. ...

...American Dream The American Dream is defined as a happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the United States especially by working hard and becoming successful. ("Merriam-Webster Dictionary") A shadow has been cast upon the eyes of average Americans. What is wrong with the American dream? Our attention has been shifted from the true problem of economic inequality to the patterned racial discrimination. Take for example Oprah Winfrey, Tyra Banks, Ellen DeGeneres and Kelly Ripa. Oprah and Tyra are both African American while Ellen and Kelly are Caucasian. Tyra is a lot younger than Oprah. Ellen is a homosexual female while Kelly is not. Do these differences of race change the fact that they make a equally substantial amount of money? Today in America we feel the need to justify the economic inequality not with class differences but with the racial borders. As Walters Michaels describes in The Trouble with Diversity he states that “the argument, in its simplest form, will be that we love race – we love identity – because we don’t love class” (Michaels, pg 966). Is this the art of the fundamental teaching of our elders? Is America truly the melting pot of the world, or should it be the salad bowl? In this social “salad bowl” we would be open to retain the cultural identities of our ancestors while assuming a part of larger America whole. The American dream is and always has been fundamentally powerful because of...

...Lauren Lehman Dr. Gabriel Estrada R/ST 302i T/Th 9:30 18, November 2012 Essay Two Gender has always played a fundamental role in the topic of religion. The type of faith that an individual chooses to embrace can ultimately identify the type of life they decide to live and molds them into the person that they become. Choosing to live by certain religious customs can - and often will - determine the clothes they wear, the people they surround themselves with, and certain ideas and activities that they practice. Within the vast range of different religions, each religious group creates either an equal balance between man and woman or strictly divides the two by demanding different life practices to abide by. Society oftentimes views religions that agree more strongly with the act of dominance and generate a sense of feminism. Many religions exercise supremacy over women while others ignore the overall essence of gender and instead practice equality. Islam and Buddhism are familiar religions that treat gender in somewhat similar yet distinct ways. For some religions, specifically Muslims, there has always been a sense of ridicule towards their Islamic society. Muslim women experience struggle and a continuous desire for acceptance within the world. People have come to conclusions that “eastern women, and especially Muslim women, are the most oppressed and downtrodden women on earth, and that although Islam may have something interesting to say on some level, it certainly...
