IOM Impact On Nursing Future

In October of 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) released the report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. In 2008, a committee was formed to evaluate, and make changes to the nursing career. Nurses, play an important role in health system, specifically at the time in America where health care has change greatly, and the health system had to make adjustment.

IOM View on Nursing Education
Education is the key point for every career, and as human there are great demands out there from, jobs, parents, and society to improve our educational level, and academic life. The focus on advancing one educational level starts with the demand from society. Most jobs, or career requires from every staff, higher knowledge, degree or certifications, along with continuous training in order to obtain any supervisory, administrative, or managerial position. The demand for the nursing career derived from the IOM which is a self-regulating group of well-known experts from various professions (IOM).
Health specialists should have higher education in order to provide patient care, and as participants of this collaborative team, their main focus should be about quality care improvement, along with approaches on evidence-based practice, and some specifics information about individual expertise (IOM 2010). The plan is to encourage the minimum of 10% of baccalaureate program graduates to enroll into a master or doctoral degree educational programs within five years of completion of BSN degree (IOM).

Prisoners have complex health needs and it is the role of the correctional health nurse to care for prisoner-patients and their health needs. Yet there is a paucity of research surrounding this topic. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients. Five registered nurses, employed in correctional centres in Southeast Queensland were interviewed to illuminate the experience of caring for prisoner-patients. Data was analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method of phenomenology. Textual analysis revealed two themes with five corresponding sub-themes that depicted the meaning of nurses’ caring for prisonerpatients. The experience of nurses caring for prisoner-patients was described by nurse participants as ‘obstructive practices’ from the custodial officers, ‘decreased standards of care’ by nursing staff, ‘prejudice’ towards to prisoners, ‘increased level of mentally ill prisoners’ and a ‘lack of recognition’ for nurses working in the prisons.
