As future educators, I feel that we play an important role in the shaping of the future generations of our country. We must be willing to understand and identify actions that both promote diversity but also threaten diversity within the classroom environment. For the purposes of this journal entry we need focus on the defining of power, privilege, and discrimination whole looking at it in notion of racism and discrimination against minority groups within our communities and society. As a white male, I also must learn how to identify my preconceived views of minority groups and understand how to unlearn and relearn about other cultural groups norms and acceptable practices.

The Effect of Cultural Distance on Entry Mode Choice: the Moderating Effect of Language Diversity

...distance on entry mode choice: the moderating effect of language diversity Name: Rajae El Aiachi Student number: 10202773 Teacher: Dr Johan Lindeque MSc. In Business Administration – Theories of International Management Date: 27-09-2015 Abstract (50 Words) Previous studies have shown that the choice of entry mode depends on various types of aspects, containing also cultural distance between countries (Arora and Fosfuri, 2000). However, there is not a lot of consensus among these articles. A few articles mentioned the effect of language distance on entry mode choice. Keywords: Cultural distance, entry mode choice and language distance 1. Introduction In this time of globalization a lot of companies are expanding their international business activities in overseas market. The ways in which firms are expanding their business in overseas market differ per enterprise and country. The hierarchical model of market entry modes by Pan and Tse (2000) shows that there are different choices of entry modes. Entry modes can be seen as equity-based versus non-equity based. Within equity-based modes, there is a division between equity joint ventures and wholly owned operations. Within nonequity based modes, there is a division between export and contractual agreements. Prior research demonstrated that the choice of entry modes rely upon different types of components. Especially, a lot of previous studies focused on the effect of cultural distance on entry mode choices...

Effect of Technology Change on Newspaper Industry

...industry in terms of changes in the entry cost, the degree of market concentration and the degree of product differentiation from the late 19th century to the present. The first real advance in printing technology was the creation of the linotype machine in 1886, which automated the process of arranging characters into lines of type. By the 1970s, though, phototypesetters, which contributed to a lower fixed cost, began to push the linotype machine into obsolescence. By automating the production of the newspaper, the number of papers available to the public greatly increased, while making it affordable for people to purchase one. These developments led to a boom in the newspaper industry where several different newspapers started to appear in major cities. The advent of the computer age and digital technology has significantly altered the printmaking process. Prepress, which covers all the steps prior to running the press, can now be done on personal computers, significantly reduced costs of printing error leading to lower marginal costs. Since the 1990s The Internet has been increasingly replacing newspapers and magazines as the primary source of news and information. In recent years, newspapers and other media have adapted to the changing technology environment by starting to offer online editions to cater to the needs of the public, further brought down marginal costs in terms of delivering and promotion. Technically, the entry cost of the industry has fallen due...

...2004 2 Media Economics and Media Policy: The Good and the Bad Abstract This paper explores the role and function of economics in media policymaking and policy analysis. This paper begins with an overview of the distinctive economics of media industries in an effort to demonstrate the importance of focused and specialized economic analysis of these industries. The paper then chronicles the growing role of economics in U.S. media policymaking and examines both the positive and the negative implications of this transition for media policy. 3 Media Economics and Media Policy: The Good and the Bad Economists traditionally have devoted relatively little attention to media industries, though the level of attention has increased in recent years. This increase in attention is likely due in large part to the wide range of economic questions raised by both the changing media technology environment (see Mitra, 2000/2001), the adoption of new regulatory philosophies in many nations around the world, and the consequent efforts to effectively impose these new philosophies.1 Overall, however, media economics remains a very small – and even somewhat obscure – specialization within the economics field, with relatively few media-oriented research articles being published annually in traditional economics journals and the only journal devoted specifically to media...

Managing Diversity

...and managing diversity approaches. Discuss. Equality is the complicated theory to explain because of the wide variety of meaning attached to concept. Depends on the article of Jewson and Mason’s (1986), they express the equality in liberal and radical approach. In the liberal view, equal opportunity, this exists when all individuals are freely able to compete for social rewards. As Webb (1977) said, the liberal approach which is according to a belief in the rights of the individual to universally possible standards of justice and citizenship. The emphasis is on the individual, for example job selection should be focus on the merit of individual which performs fairly. On the other hand, the radical approach is to achieve not only the equal opportunity, but also the equal outcome. Compare to liberal approach, the focus of the radical approach is not on individuals, but on groups. “The ideal of the radical approach is a situation where every workforce is representative of all the social groups available to it” (Kaler, 2001: 53). For instance, although individual who is the group representative, the principle of selection will not choose the merit alone. To conclude, equality can be theorized in liberal and radical approach. Regard to the complicated conception of equality, to get the equal opportunity in employment which also is a complex and huge progress. It requires a mix of affirmative action legislation, anti-discrimination legislation and managing diversity approach. In...

...THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF KNOWLEDGE, CULTURE AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT Madrid, Spain Diversity Assessment Tools: A Comparison Abstract: Much has been written about how to address diversity in the human resources function (recruitment, retention, professional development etc.) but less has been written about how to develop strategies to leverage diversity in other areas. This study proposes an approach to exploring diversity through the value chain and a tool to help an organization assess its strategy. The Diversity Audit Tool (DAT) was developed from an analysis of current diversity practices in the Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Sector in Canada. This paper will review the dimensions of the tool and compare it to six other diversity lenses. Keywords: Diversity assessment, diversity audit tool, diversity lens, “business” case for diversity. Increasingly corporations in Canada have stressed the importance of embracing diversity and have stressed the benefits of creating inclusive work environments which:  Promote the work of all organizational members and ensures that it is acknowledged, respected, and that employees are compensated equitably for it  Value diversity both within the organization and outside of it  Implement a meritocracy – rather than non-job-related ascribed characteristics – ensuring the need for equality and fairness underpins the organizational culture  Emphasize individual accountability at all levels of the organization  Constantly...
