Diversity Reflection

Growing up in the Bay Area of California, I was exposed to many different cultures, religions, and ideologies outside my own and from a young age was insatiably curious about the richness of culture around me. I have also been profoundly impacted by my experience as a child of a parent with disability, which is an often overlooked aspect of diversity. I have witnessed both the resiliency and courage as well as the invisibility and sometimes dehumanization process that can occur when people become marginalized in society. The internalization of these experiences has created a passion for understanding and honoring the unique intersectionality of each client’s cultural identity and context. While I consider it a great gift to be immersed in such different cultures from a young age and have my familial experiences, I also worked diligently to recognize that growing up in a diverse place does not predicate cultural competency. I aim to use these experiences as a launching board to continue to develop understanding and engagement with the many aspects of diversity. …show more content…
Although I had been part of a group as a second year student, it was very meaningful to participate in these discussions as a facilitator. Throughout the process of the group we were able to delve into these issues with nuance and sophistication by sharing narratives and reactions. It was imperative to create a safe space to not only to share stories, but also reflect, recognize, and name resistance and explore other internal processes. As a facilitator, I learned how to better listen, engage, and tolerate the tension and sometimes ambiguity of processing and engaging with diversity, personally and

Diversity Reflection

...Diversity Reflection Dominique Stout Webster University DIVERSITY REFLECTION In order understand a person’s way of thinking and/or character traits, we must first seek to understand that individual’s upbringing and the environment(s) he/she has historically been subjected to. According to Hays-Thomas (2015), diversity competency “is a learning process supporting ability to respond effectively in a diverse environment” (p. 148). I grew up in a small town called Cusseta, Georgia. It was a town with one caution light and two gas stations located about fifteen miles south of the Fort Benning Army Installation. Growing up in Cusseta, the town’s population was about half and half between African American and Caucasian residents. Although very limited in exposure, I was always taught to treat people equally no matter who they are or where they come from. Now that I sit back and think if there were any other ethnic groups that I was exposed to growing up, I can only remember one woman: Miss Hope. Miss Hope was a fortune teller who set up shop across the street from one of the local gas stations. Her ethnicity was never discussed, but we all assumed that she was different. In a town where racial tensions still existed between grandparents of my generation, Miss Hope’s shop was bombed and one of her grandchildren killed. In Cusseta, all children attended Chattahoochee County Education Center, from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. We (black and white) were all...

A Personal Reflection On Diversity

...Reflection on Diversity I was 17 years old when my parents decide to move to Argentina. I went to this country went I was about to finish my senior in high school. Going to Argentina at that age was very difficult. I did not have friends or family there. I knew that making friends would be challenging because I did not know anyone there. I was very shy and I struggled to communicate with people even that we speak the same language the culture is totally different. I had to enroll in an ongoing high school program. At school, I felt invisible and excluded. I remembered sitting at lunch by myself. There were other groups of students sitting at the same table, but they would not talk to me or sit next to me. It was frustrating not to be able to talk to anybody or have a good understanding of what they were saying around me. I felt lonely. I wanted to go back home, but I knew that there was a reason why my parents and I were there....

Reflection Mgt 311

...Week Five Reflection Summary MGT/311 Week Five Reflection Summary During week five, diversity in the workplace was the primary focus of our learning objectives. Over the past 60 years, as equality and worker rights have progressed immensely, diversity in the workplace has evolved significantly as well. With this significant change in workforce demographics, managers and employees have made many adjustments to not only accommodate these changes, but find ways to increase the productivity and efficiency in the workplace (Robbins & Judge, 2011). One of the most important elements in ensuring diversity is not only embraced, but capitalized on, is awareness and understanding of its limitless capabilities. Effective managers are able to analyze their workforce accurately and utilize their strengths in a highly productive, collaborative working environment. This summary will provide an overview of the strategies managers often use to manage, monitor and ensure diversity in the workplace. First, diversity management is a way of managing others with an open mind and the ability to know the needs and differences of others. Helping new employees, who are of the minority, become part of the "team" and making sure that the co-workers are helping them will cut down on the high turnover which usually can happen with minorities. There is no reason why they shouldn't feel welcomed and comfortable to stay long-term. Showing fairness to this diverse workforce is a must and cannot...

Fhs Final Essay

...Making the project the past couple weeks really involved a lot more self-reflection than I initially anticipated. It took a couple of hours to come up with three core values that I truly felt defined me. After finding those values, trying to discover where exactly I learned each one presented its own task as well. I noticed that we have grown up and we very much consider ourselves individuals. We like to think that we are all made uniquely and that being ourselves is a good thing socially because it provides diversity. This term project showed me that I am not as much of a unique individual as I believed. I kept observing my progress and seeing that I am merely a reflection of the important people in my life. If my parents were people who boasted and bragged, I probably wouldn’t value humility so much. If I had never experienced hardships concerning my family’s economic status, I might not have ever developed the sense of compassion that I possess today. I didn’t come out of the womb as some extremely different kid because my environment made me that way. Realizing all of these things made me appreciate the work of Geoffrey Canada that much more. Even though he’s helping out young people in Harlem, New York, I am very grateful for his overall awareness. He has done everything he can to change what those kids are reflected off of. The program that teaches young parents various things about raising a child is crucial. Because of his ability to see the services that will reflect...

Reflection In Health And Social Care

...This self-reflection is about a circumstance that occurred between me and a lorry driver where there was a language barrier between us. Throughout this reflection, I will be referring to the Gibbs (1988) reflective model to underpin and reinforce my discussion and reflection on this occasion. Description: This incident occurred on a Saturday morning at a food store of a large intentional business. I was the only warehouse operative on until that afternoon. After unloading the lorry, I noticed the paperwork was missing important information. I asked the driver about this and to get the information required to fill out the paperwork. However, the driver main language was Polish and couldn’t speak any English. But, I could not speak any polish as well. This then caused the incident as both of us could not understand each other or get the information that we require. Feelings: At the time of the incident, I was mainly confused towards the lorry driver. This is because, I didn’t know that lorry driver could not understand English, so I was confused...

Term Paper

...1. In your answer, identify the main lines of argument and differences in points of view between the commentators and the author. Justify your own point of view regarding the importance of reflection to individual and organisational performance. In his article, “I Don't Have Time to Think!, Versus the Art of Reflective Practice”, Joseph Raelin defined the importance of reflective practice, laid down organizational strategies that encourage reflection, and called for developing the skills of reflection. Two commentators, namely Phillip DiChiara and Philip McArthur, presented contra-arguments as to the standpoint of the author on reflective practices. DiChiara's main argument evolves around the creation of a “safe space” to make reflection viable, whereas McArthur reckons the key barrier to reflection-in-action is not necessarily time but skill. Besides, he disagrees with the author on how to apply certain skills of reflection at the individual or collective levels. Philip DiChiara opines that the concept of reflective practise is essentially unknown to many practitioners. His main argument is that reflective practice can never flourish if the organization or managers do not set the stage and create an environment for reflection. He argues that managers have to facilitate the correct balance between “getting down to business” and nurturing a conducive environment for refection in order to engage their peers. In his belief, this is essentially due to the differences from group...

Reflection Essay

...of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as a guide: The names of the patient, staff members and health care setting will be changed to protect...

...Learning through reflection 2 Reflection is an active process whereby the professional can gain an understanding of how historical, social, cultural and personal experiences have contributed to professional knowledge and practice (Wilkinson, 1996). Duffy (2007) believes that reflective practice is an active deliberate process of critically examining practice where an individual is challenged and enabled to undertake the process of self-enquiry to empower the practitioner to realize desirable and effective practice within a reflexive spiral of personal transformation. Learning is derived from experience but it doesn’t just happen. For it to take place you not only need to engage in reflection you must also record it. By thinking about what you are doing and why you are doing it is what turns your experiences into meaningful learning. If you are to become a reflective practitioner you have to use that learning to increase your professional knowledge and skills to the benefit of not only yourself but also to your patients / clients. Why Reflect Reflection is really a process that begins with looking back on a situation, pondering over it, learning from it and then using the new knowledge to help you in future similar situations. Reflection, which is learning through experience, is not a new concept. As humans, we naturally reflect on our surroundings and experiences. However, the conscious, deliberate and ordered process of using reflection as a learning tool...

Third Reflection Paper

...GE 2218 Third Reflection Paper “Write your own script for your play” this is the most impressing point I have learnt form Mr. Ki ‘ s success on his career, which is also the major principle for his career management. In this talk, Mr. Ki shed light on the meaning of success from different perspectives and dimensions. I can tell from his career that he is satisfied with what he did in the past and what he is doing now. There are two essential factors I can draw from his experience, reinvent your career and refine your life. For the points that he raised in this talk, I quite endorsed his unique perception on career that it is divided into three phases. “ Work for success”, “ work for significance” and “ work for legacy”. Apart from myself, I guess most of the people value ones’ success by wealth and positions. Mr. Ki , however, adds to that life structure, purpose, identity and significance. Exemplified by Mr. Ki ‘s career, he retreated from his respected working position just at the prime of his career simply because he wanted to do something meaningful, not only to his life but also to the whole society. So he transfers his prowess to help and engage in social enterprise project. Reinventing one’s career is equally important in a sense that it helps put your career into perspective, and achieve a balance of life, just like what Mr. Ki mentioned, the second career, the parallel career and the social career. Besides, always reflect on you experience as well as have a full...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...

...Date: 27th October, 2014 Title: Morrisons breaks pledge on low prices Link: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Retail_and_leisure/article1475669.ece The ethical issue was related to credibility of a company. It was about Morrisons the supermarket increased prices of some products marked with “I’m cheaper” sign after promising to cut prices permanently on over 1000 goods six months ago. The supermarket claimed the rise in prices was only a reflection of “commodity inflation” and still “lower than they would have been” without the “I’m Cheaper”cuts. No doubt by increasing the price of goods, the supermarket could compensate the losses from the inflation in supply costs. This do help to maintain profitability of the supermarket and strengthen the confidence of its investors. Also, even though the prices had been raised, they were still lower than the general prices of these goods. The promise of enduring price cut was kept. It was a win-win situation in the eyes of Morrisons. One of the problems arose in this issue was the reputation of Morrisons towards the customers was deeply affected. Although action of increasing the prices due to inflation was justifiable, Morrisons still broke part of its vow of long-lasting price cut. A credibility gap between Morrisons and customers might have been develop as a result. Moreover, the intention of the supermarket was to maintain its profitability while the issue of the news had leaded to a fall in its share price of 0.46...
