The United States has been the location of choice for many immigrants since the beginning. Two thirds of the world’s immigration comes to America, many of these individuals come from different cultures that do not blend well with the western culture (Oni, 2008). A human service provider will interact with employees, individuals, and families, which are not from the same cultural background as the provider. As a leader of a human service organization the leader must promote an environment in which the organizations employees are prepared to provide culturally appropriate services to individuals, families, and individuals with disabilities (Oni, 2008).
As people grow older they are living longer his and her needs and standard of living will change such as the environment, social, and medical needs (DSS, 2011). As a human service provider it is important to assess the needs of the elderly client to identify the correct resources the elderly individual will need as his or her lifestyles change (DSS, 2011).
The human service providers aid the elderly individual in finding community services, which could help the elderly individual to continue living in his or her home. Human service providers aid in finding providers, arrange services, and suggest changes for the elderly individual.
The Pennsylvania Department of Aging is a human service provider, which was formed in 1978 after many years of lobbying by groups and individuals who represented the growing population of elderly. Pennsylvania has the third largest population of elderly (PDA, 2011). The mission of the Department of Aging is to improve the lives of the elderly. The Pennsylvania department of aging services over 2.5 million elderly residents throughout the state (PDA, 2011). This human service provider offers services long-term living. The majority of elderly adults with need help with activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, cleaning, and meal preparation (PDA, 2011). Health and wellness is an important part to the aging population human service providers will aid the elderly in finding a physician, health insurance, exercise programs, prescription assistance, and nutritional education.
An important issue many human service providers will handle is crimes and abuse of elderly individuals. Crimes and abuse against the elderly come in many forms financial, neglect, physical, sexual, and identity theft. The abuse of elderly individuals can be from strangers, family members, and caregivers. All human service providers will give his or her elderly clients, caregivers, and family members information regarding what he or she can do if they are a victim of a crime or abuse.
