In 2011, Thaila-Paige Dixon-Eeet (applicant) applied for an apartment at 500 Dawes Rd in Toronto, Ontario. This apartment has a terrible reputation, and has had many of complaints including by not limited to things like heating, mice and fire damage. The apartment was priced at $680 and even with it’s bad reputation Dixon-Eeet was desperate to find an apartment and liked the area in which the apartment was located. At the time that she filed for the apartment, she was an emancipated 17 year old and was being financially supported by Toronto Children’s Aid Society. Dixon-Eeet was denied the apartment due to her age. According to the proprietor, (respondant) Dixon-Eeet’s application was denied due to the building’s policy that stated that they did not rent any apartment to any under the age of 18. Decision
It was decided, by the Human Rights tribunal that the respondent was ordered to pay Dixon-Eeet $10,000 for their Code violation resulting in injury to her dignity, feelings and self-respect and within 30 days. Also, within six months, the respondent was ordered to keep an expert in human rights to develop an appropriate human rights policy that is specific for the renting rules for 500 Dawes Rd and to post the new policy as well as the Human Right’s Commission’s Code cards in the rental office at 500 Dawes Rd.
