Dixon's Argument Analysis: Alcohol And Rape

Many people have sexual encounters while under the influence of alcohol, but where is the line drawn from being slightly impaired to completely susceptible to the effects of alcohol on one’s body and mind. Nicholas Dixon, author and philosophy professor, writes about some of the consequences of having sex while drinking in “Alcohol and Rape.” I believe that Dixon’s writing relies far too much on the man making sure both parties are consenting. I believe both parties should be one hundred percent responsible for their own selves as well as being responsible for the consent of their partners.
Dixon’s argument is as follows;
1. In cases when a woman’s judgment is impaired by alcohol, she is unable to consent.
2. Men should not have sex without consent.
3. Therefore, men should not have sex with a woman that is drunk.
Dixon’s argument is fair, but what if both parties are too drunk to give consent. There are without a doubt a lower number of rapes against men, however rape from either gender is completely unacceptable and not morally permissible. At the end of Dixon’s writing there is a story of a young man who was drugged and then raped by a woman. He is then blamed because he is a man and he can …show more content…
Dixon does speak of how regret does not equal rape, but in this case neither party knew what exactly their actions were. In the case from TXST two students were very impaired from alcohol, but according to texts and witnesses both wanted to have sex with each other. After the pair had sex they woke up and neither of the people were able to remember what exactly had happened. After figuring out they had sex, the girl pressed sexual assault charges against the man. The man in this situation was found guilty and expelled because he had sex with a drunk girl. I believe that in this case the woman should be found equally as guilty for having sex with a man too drunk to
