...meaning of life? What is the right thing to do, and what is wrong? Is this education really what I want, or what my parents want? What do I want? Many questions are asked, but no one knows the answer to them. Through the short story “A Gap of Sky” a young girl on the influence of drugs, is looking for printer ink for her essay. On one side she wants to just keep being under the influence of drugs, party all night and have fun with her friends, but on the other hand she wants something to do with her life, she wants an education. One day she sees a gap in the sky. What does it symbolise? Is this a new start? The story “A Gap of Sky”, by Anna Hope is a wake up call for young people. Waking up still influent by drugs after eight hours of sleep Ellie shoots up from under the duvet. She has an essay due for Tuesday, and the only thing she is missing is printer ink. “She remembers the letter, the stomach-lurching letter: If this lack of application continues we will have no choice but to reconsider your place on the course.” Apparently Ellie does not care about the school. She is a naive and young woman, and she wants to decide for herself. “She needs to get some printer ink, if she’s going to do the this essay. And if not? Will they really kick her off the course? … She thinks of this past year, of university, and it feels like sludge, like thick dark sludge in her brain… No way. She’s got to get this essay in.” Although she has done some stupid things at the university, she...

...Fear of Violence Morgan Campbell ENG/215 March 2, 2015 Professor Paul Korzeniowski Fear of Violence Within todays rapid race of self-preservation, there is still overbearing fear within the society. The three essays, that I plan to lay out their critical argumentative analysis, each share a likelihood for fear of violence in daily lives. The author of “Do We Fear the Right Things” identifies differing types of fears people share. While the next author of “Parents Need Help” correlates the rampant rate of video gaming sales to parental and social nurturing guidance. Lastly, the author of “Bang, You’re Dead” argues the proxy self between fantasy violence and children. In reviewing all three essays, it is easier to identify how the authors construct their arguments using opinions and evidence to persuade the reader. Critical Argumentative Essays After the horrific terrorist attack on United States soil in September 11, 2001, author David Myers wrote the professional essay titled “Do We Fear the Right Things” in December 2001. Myers expressed that the fear of the attack surrendered Americans helpless in daily routines. “In the ensuing months, Americans flew 20 percent less. “No way are we flying…instead, we drove many of those miles, which surely caused more additional highway deaths than occurred on those four ill-fated flights,” (Myers, 2001). Throughout the remainder of his article, it explained a multitude of phobias with detailed numerical statistics and off topic...

...how being young and, although freedom is within reach, responsibility and expectations are right behind you, reminding you of reality. The youth is a vital part of your life providing background for what the personality of the person concerned ends up to be. Every person has different ways of looking at freedom. Some people like to take a run in the nature, open their minds and others do drugs to escape from reality. In “A Gap of Sky” the girl called Ellie deals with the issues of drugs, freedom and responsibility. She does a lot of coke and seems to be addicted and needs it so she can write her essay. “and then more coke arriving”(l.20) “Coke. Does she have any left? … Yesssss! Clever Ellie. Little bump just to get things started.” (l.30-33). Ellie also likes to party and the night before seemed to be pretty rough with booze, smoking crack pipe, taking drugs and ending up with some bruises. “rests her swollen cheek against her palm” (l.3) “her chest hurts.”(l.11) In the morning of this wild night, she wakes up and realizes that she has an essay due to the day after and if she doesn’t hand it in she will be kicked out of university. This makes her choose between having many days of complete freedom or doing the essay and continuing the course which she loathes. Even though it’s very tough on her and she definitely doesn’t want to continue, she knows that this is what she has and needs to do. “She thinks of this past...

...MBA Admissions Essay Powerful Tips for Improving Your Odds of Gaining Admission to the MBA Program of Your Choice Admissions essays are easily the most challenging part of the MBA application process, and it’s no wonder. ...expectations, because nowadays there is so much you have to live up to. You have wear nice clothes, do well in school, have lots of friends etc. So it’s not surprising that sometimes you would want to get away and forget about all that. In this story, the young girl, whose name is Ellie, doesn’t live up to her parents and teachers expectations, which results in her taking drugs, especially coke. We don’t really follow Ellie for a long time but on her journey for printer ink, she is still able to go through a big range of emotions; fear of death, joy, rebelliousness, dejectedness, freedom and so on. After reading the first few lines, we get a pretty good idea about what Ellie is like. The description of her walking up with swollen cheeks and peeing in the sink gives us a good picture that Ellie is living on the edge where nothing matters anymore. It is clear to us that she isn’t living a very healthy life. Her wealth is terrible; her chest hurts and she has inflammation of her eyes. “She sits on the bed, brings her legs up under her chin, rummages for what she can remember from the night before”. This tells us that she had been very affected by alcohol and drugs, since she remembers nothing but glimpses. It also appears that this is something she does often, almost every night. Ellie is a very unfocused and diffuse person who often gets distracted by meaningless things in her surroundings not involving her actual purpose. She doesn’t think ahead of the present, she...

...Dakota Stephens Professor Baker English 1301 9/13/13 Our Generation on Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking Reading and writing are things that I am very well at. The difference is, I’m stronger in my writing skills than my reading skills. The reason for this is that when I’m writing I get so into my words and imagination to where my hand with the magical pencil does the talking. My skills in reading only depend on one thing, if it catches my attention or not. Stories have to get me involved with the story somehow in order for me to get interest. If it’s not catching my attention, I’m not reading it. But most importantly, critical thinking is what ties reading and writing together. I am very picky about the books and articles I read. Stories for me have to have a mystery or even sometimes a sappy love story. Of course I’m going to love romantic books because I’m a girl, right? Yet again, some love stories bore the living hell out of me because it’s a “typical” love story. Reading books just all depends on how the author grabs his reader’s attention and how he plays the story throughout the book. When I find a book that I’m interested in, I will read the entire novel. Or even something that is scary will keep hooked on the story. Scary stories are my favorites because the story just keeps my suspense in play. Celebrity gossip is definitely something that I get into reading. There is always something new with these celebrities. Since these celebrities are well...

...Virtue can simply be defined as the quality in a person to do what is right and shun what is wrong. Virtue enables a person to attain moral excellence. It is not only a quality which has substance, but also one, which is extremely desirable. In ancient Greek, during times of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, moral philosophy was an essential discipline which got taught in schools. Most of the Great philosophers of that time heard a different version, accounts and views about the ideal, moral virtues. In this essay, attempts are made critically to analyze the views, opinions and beliefs of two of the most influential philosophers of all time- Socrates and Aristotle ( Prior, 2001). The essays will showcase the crucial differences between Aristotle account on virtue, and Socrates account of virtue. This essay will then attempt to give an analysis of which among the two arguments is the most plausible. It should be noted from the onset the Socrates and Aristotle have different and also similar arguments about virtue. They concur that virtue is a state but differ sharply on its functions. These accounts shall get discussed in the essay ( Anagnostopoulos, 2011). The account on virtue as proposed, by Aristotle perceives morals virtues, to represent the characters that are a consequence of habits repeating themselves over and over again. His account explains that the virtues of a person can be traced between the two extreme ends of two cardinal states, which are scarcity and excess...

...February 01, 2014 Suzann Connell Critical Argument Analysis Fear takes control of a person when place on certain circumstances that they are not ready to face. The three essays that I will analyze has their own identity of fear about something. The author of “Do We Fear the Right Things” talks about different fears that people have. On the “Bang, You’re Dead" article, the author’s argument is that the fear of what people see is what people do is not always true, and fantasy is just what it is. The third essay “Parents Need Help”, talks about how parents are the only ones responsible for their own children when it comes to violence on video gaming. The question is do the authors supported their arguments and how clearly they proved their essays. On the essay, "Do We Fear the Right Things" the author used facts, statistics and other fears in life in general to prove his argument. I think the author discussed his thesis well by using his own opinion and theories of people's fear in general. The facts and statistics that he used got my attention and made the essay an interesting one. There are really other threats that we should worry about, because no matter what we do risk will be there. He also said that it is normal for people to fear other things than fear itself. The author on the essay “Bang, You’re Dead” talked about how fantasy violence is good for a child rather than bad. He argued that children likes fantasies because they can be whatever they want to be in...

...the rhetorical mode. It is not meant to take the place of any specific instructions given by your instructor for this assignment. If your instructor wants you to write your paper in a different manner, then by all means do it the way your instructor requires you to do it. Processing the Process Essay Here is some detailed information about writing your process (“How to”) essay. 1. Here are some important specifics and details. Follow all of them very closely. The formal name of the mode is process analysis. It was a wonderful class even though it was online but the teacher made it clear and telling us that the only way we can learn in this class is if we read the textbook. The textbook got a lot of information in it; that made it so clear that I couldn’t put the book down after I got used to reading it, and I am thankful for this class o relate to the real world now. So I am not going to waste all the details in the introduction and I am going to let you read this essay. Ethics is the study of what is right or wrong, good or bad, in which we are responsible for our actions in areas such as etiquette, professional codes, legal and religious codes. Ethics also can be a thought of an attempt or reasonable manner to basic questions. An example of ethics is just like going to play the guitar other than getting your mother a birthday gift or giving her the trip of her dreams to make her happy. The best thing to do is the right thing and not the wrong thing. At the end you would want your mother to have the best and the world in many different ways. Ethics involve a clear mind of goals and personal events that help you through things to get a better understanding. Ethical issues a problem or situation that requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical). Psychological egoism is good to tell things and argue them. A lot of people...

...Running head: Ethics Essay Ethics Essay Crystal Sircelj ETH/316-Ethics and Social Responsibility August 20, 2012 Carmela David Ethics Essay Ethics consist of concepts of right and wrong behavior. Different philosophers, such as Socrates, Aristotle, Bentham, and Kant dabbled in the theories of ethics. Virtue theory, utilitarianism, and deontology deal with approaches to ethics. All three theories consist of similarities and differences as they address ethics and morality. This paper will also include a personal experience as it relates to the relationship between virtue, values, and moral concepts as it applies to deontology. Virtue ethics is an approach to ethics where a person possesses the habits and characteristics that wills him or her to achieve excellence (Boylan, 2009). This approach differs from utilitarianism and deontology in that a person is judged morally wrong based on an action even though the person possesses characteristics to want to achieve excellence. Virtue ethics is based on morality and not on ethics. This approach does not define how one should act but on the traits necessary to achieve excellence. Utilitarianism theory is the approach where the action or decision should be what is best for the greater good of the people. This approach differs from virtue ethics and utilitarianism...

We finde ourselves in some kind of dormroom monday afternoon, Ellie has overslept and is very hungover from the day before. There is an essay for tuesday morning which is terribly stressfull for our charather. While she is freshing up we are going through flashbacks from the day before where she remember her being with some girl and a guy named Toby, she remembers going out for booze and taking coke and most likely a drug called K which gives hallucinations –she is quite sure she took some K because she remembers the barn in a deeper more hallucinating way L.22: ”looking up at it and thinking she was in a barn somewhere, a beautifull spacious lightfilled barn”. It seems like she is almost addicted to drugs. One of the first things she think of is if there is any coke left, and luckily there are some saved in her bra. It shows us that she is desperate to get some L.30: ”Coke. Did she have any left? Find the wrap, in the bra. The bra, in the tender little pile on the floor, curled around her knickers. Yesssss! Clever Ellie”. Ellie is reading literature at the university. She has already extended her task once, and now again it seems like she doesn't get to deliver the...
