It is important to do the right thing. Although that can be very challenging at times you have to do the right thing. In the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen the characters learn the importance to stand up for what is right even when times get tough.
To start with, Nightjohn believed the importance to have other slaves learn to read and write was very significant. He would risk almost anything, including his own freedom. Nightjohn has escaped to the north - where owning slaves is illegal - many times, but yet he comes back to do the right thing by teaching slaves to read and write. ”He wasn’t wearing a shirt and when he turned his back the sun caught the scars from the old whippings. Rippled and rigid” (page 73). Since Nightjohn comes back to the cruelty of being a slave in the south, knowing that he will get even more of the terrible scars to educate other slaves proves that you have to persevere through the tough times…show more content… She cares for Sarny like one of her own. In Nightjohn Mammy finds Nightjohn teaching Sarny how to read. At first, Mammy is very upset and has trouble imagining what would happen to Sarny if Waller finds out Sarny is getting an education. Nightjohn then explains that he is teaching Sarny to read and write in order for her, as well as other slaves to write down their experiences of being a slave. Mammy then realizes the importance of slaves learning literacy and “Moves quietly goes back to her mat to sleep without looking back” (page 58). Mammy willfully lets one of her “daughters” read and write because it is the right thing to do.
In the book Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen the characters learn the importance to stand up for something you believe is right. It is better to stand up for what is right alone, than follow mainstream and live passively even though things are wrong.
