Of Likes and Men
One word: neediness. The entire Generation Like documentary, can be easily summarized with that unique word. People striving for approval, fame, and the monotonous exacerbation of what one likes and what not; they believe that they are doing something empowering with their lives, without realizing that they are being exploited. Does social media truly empowers individuals to strive for better? I do not think so, for what I saw, is that people will almost do anything to get a “like”, or getting comments on their feeds. Values and principles seem to be forgotten for the likes of fame and small advancements; so much work for little gain. In the video, there is a girl who has millions of followers and many sponsors, and the girl’s mom was asked what makes more followers; her response was incredible. The mom said that she takes full body pictures of her fifteen year old in order to have sponsors and followers. Here it begins, the erosion of human values for the whim of a “like”. Big corporations are making tremendous amounts of profit with people’s idiocy, and for their respective awards, they are given crumbs. It is a subject of admiration really, get some troubled humans with low self-esteem, and make them work for free. Profits rise, and everyone gets happy. One gets money, and the others get instant gratification. It is the perfect business model. One thing to point out, I know that some of the people who appeared in the documentary were actually paid, but they were given merchandise and some money, nothing substantial at all. If someone is making millions for a company which already has billions, they should pay a fair amount to the employee- not crumbs. The boy of Compton was paid with goods and a few amounts of coin, and probably, he has made them more money that what they have given out to him. Does it seem fair? No. Exploitable, yes. In this paper, I will be comparing two films, a documentary and feature film, about mental disability. The documentary that I will be using in this analysis is People Say I’m Crazy, a 1989 documentary film by California Mental Health and Silver Lining Playbook(2012) an Academy Award nominated feature film.
