He buys more land, but is unhappy, for no matter how much more land he gets, he wants more. He becomes greedier and greedier until he loses control of his life and, in the end, loses everything. This story shows us that even if we have enough to get by, the prospect of becoming wealthier is so alluring it can cause us to risk all the good things we already have. At the start, Pahom is a content, hardworking men. Unfortunately, he makes the mistake of thinking that more land would make his life better. ...particular; and (3) Current Quality-of-Life research in the rich welfare states. Printed reflections on all this contemplation now fill a hundred meters of bookshelves. This paper takes stock of the progress made on seven classical topics. Are we now any wiser? Or is Dodge (1930) right in his contention that “the theory of the happy life has remained on about the same level that the ancient Greeks left it”? This inventory will differ from the usual review articles. The focus will not be on current technical research issues, but rather on the broader questions that prompted the enquiry. Furthermore, the aim is not only to enumerate advances in understanding, but also to mark the blind spots. The following issues will be considered: 1. What is happiness? 2. Can happiness be measured? 3. Is unhappiness the rule? 4. How do people assess their happiness? 5. What conditions favour happiness? 6. Can happiness be promoted? 7. Should happiness be promoted? These scientific issues do not emerge in a social vacuum, but are rooted in broader moral and political debates. Questions 1 and 7 are part of an ongoing ethical discussion about value priorities. Which values should guide us? How should we rank values such as “wisdom”, “equality”, “justice”, “freedom” and “happiness”? Together with question 5, these issues also figure in the related political debates about socio-economic priorities. Should the emphasis be on national...

...ones that John Gottman writes about in his book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. She even mentions him a number of times in this book, referring to some of the ideas that he incorporates in his work. Johnson separates her book into three main sections; “A New Light on Love,” “Seven Transforming Conversations,” and “The Power of Hold Me Tight.” Each section focuses on a different area, but they all contribute to the main theme of the important things to remember in order to create a happy relationship. The first section, “A New Light on Love,” begins by describing the type of research and work that Johnson does. Johnson focuses on a certain type of therapy that she calls EFT; or, Emotionally Focused Therapy, a therapy based on studying the emotional moments that define a relationship (Johnson 5). Johnson strongly believes that romantic love is all about the attachment and emotional bonding within a relationship (6). The main thing that people look for while trying to find a suitable mate, is, although it is normally subconsciously, is someone that they can depend on. Everyone wants to find someone who they can share an emotional connection with, and someone that they can feel comfortable around. As opposed to Gottman, who says that there are many reasons for fights, both large and small, Johnson claims that the majority of fights are actually just protests over emotional disconnection (30). The emotional starvation that can result causes a “demand-withdraw pattern...

...Talking turns into arguing, and arguing turns into something much worse. Now you find yourself in handcuffs, and pinned to the cold, blue hood of the officer’s car even though you are now trying to obey every order. The officer does not care and begins to assault you. Moments later you are lying on the ground defenseless while the officer is calling for back up, and your worse nightmare has come true. Now what if I told you that the scenario you have read could have been avoided? That same officer had complaints filed against him, but nothing was ever done about it. Approximately 33% of officers are convicted of their crimes that commit police brutality meaning a staggering 67% are let back in the streets (Web). With more officers not being convicted of their crimes, there has been a steady rise in police brutality. This tells society that this behavior amongst the police has been accepted by the by the bureaucratic systems that oversee local law enforcement. Too many people around the country are being mistreated and killed by officers because of their misjudgment or their intentions to kill. These actions should not be allowed within are local law enforcements because it is unfair to society since they do not have the same power. Society is not allowed to fight back whenever the police abuse us, and since this will never change, higher officials need to stop officers (Curriden). Taking that into consideration, I believe that the bureaucratic systems that...

...The Necklace vs. The Story of an Hour Pamela Richard ENG 125 Lesa Hadley May 11, 2012 The Necklace vs. The Story of an Hour A short story, “The Necklace” (“La parure”) written by Guy de Maupassant in 1884 and a poem, ‘The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin in 1894 are literary works that are very comparable yet are different. The two women, Madame Mathilde Loisel and Louise Mallard, portrayed in these literary works are protagonists who have trouble because of conflicting expectations imposed on them by society. Both Mathilde Loisel and Louise Mallard want something more than what their lifestyle offers them. During the time when the authors wrote these pieces, the social behaviors showed gender suppression/oppression. This essay will compare and contrast elements of content, form, and style between two different literary works. Both authors chose the theme of gender roles in marriage. During the time when the authors wrote theses pieces, the social behaviors showed gender suppression/oppression. The nineteenth century was impacted by the industrial revolution which caused a gap in gender roles, especially in the upper and middle classes (Radek, 2001). Men and women were thought to have completely different natures. Men were considered to be powerful, brave, rational and independent. Women were considered weak, timid, emotional, and dependent. Those differences separated their functions in society. "Men were thought to have natures suited to the public...

The success of Love and Basketball helped propel Prince-Bythewood career and reputation and Beyond the Lights definitely confirmed her talent and ability to bring us touching and heart filling love stories. Prince-Bythewood gives us a modern-day love story starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw who plays Noni, a rising pop star who makes provocative music although her talent is beyond that which the industry allows. Kaz who is played by Nate Parker is a Los Angeles police officer who sees the truth behind Noni’s fake persona. Kaz falls in love with Noni and despite the fact that his father objects because he wants his son to go further in politics. Though Kaz and Noni go through very difficult circumstances, they stay together because of the fact that they actually see each other in the way that no one else does. Noni on the other hand is a mixed beauty that is from Bixton, a neighborhood of South London. Though she gets personal inspiration from singers such as Nina Simone and is talented enough to pull off her classic song “Black Bird”, she is bullied into taking the easiest and most common path to what we call stardom. This path which so often includes sexualization...
