The results of the study scaled the dogs on five dimensions of behavior temperament: playfulness, curiosity/fearfulness, chase-proneness, sociability, and aggressiveness (De Palma et al., 2005). Dogs living in rescue shelters were assessed as demonstrating a low degree of playfulness, showing distraction by the environment when being enticed to play. The sheltered dogs also scored low on curiosity but, high on fearful behavior. The cortisol levels for the sheltered dogs were significantly higher than the cortisol levels of canines living in households, indicative of stress and anxiety associated with shelter lifestyle. Shelter dogs showed a low proportion of chase-proneness supported by demonstrations of low physical activity and excitability.
Shelter dogs were assessed as exhibiting low levels of sociability toward conspecies but, a high sociability when concerning humans (De Palma et al., 2005). This trend was also demonstrated when observing levels of aggressiveness; the dogs seemed more antagonistic toward conspecies than humans. It should be noted that shelter dogs displayed rare bouts of hostile behavior and results were supported by little data.
It is interesting to find a set of shared characteristics existing in canines living in rescue shelters. Such findings lead one to speculate if the shelter environment may be partly responsible for inducing behavior characteristics? After all, dogs living in shelters are subjected to a variety of stressors including isolation from attachment figures, loss of control, intense noise, and a multitude of other distressing stimuli (Tuber, Miller, Caris, Halter, Linden &ump; Hennessy, 1999). A dog enduring such a harsh environment is likely to acquire abnormal social behavior, retarded development, and/or unpredictable reactions in novel situations.
There are effective strategies to improve the welfare of canines living in rescue shelters. Deborah Wells (2003) cited three possible areas for improvement in most shelter environments, these include: inanimate enrichment, conspecific contact and human contact.
As previously discussed, dogs have a higher intelligence than most people would give them credit. Surrendering a dog into a barren environment would most likely enhance psychological deficiency and promote future maladaptive behaviors. Therefore, it is encouraged that the dogs be surrounded by a complex and stimulating inanimate environment (Wells, 2003).
Toys are a great, inexpensive approach to encourage play and reduce boredom (Wells, 2003). Exposure to innovative objects helps prompt exploration and increase activity. Unfortunately, the introduction of toys might induce possessive aggression between conspecies housed in the same kennel and might also promote the spread of disease.
Suspending the toys at the front of the cage often resolves the issue of sanitation and possessive aggression (Wells, 2003). Having an object of interest attached to the front of the cage may also encourage the dogs to spend more time in that section, statistically increasing their chances of being adopted (Marston &ump; Bennett, 2003).
Habituation to toys often occurs over the course of several days and the sanitary rotation of toys is recommended (Wells, 2003). Interestingly, puppies will express acute interest toward the same toy for several weeks after introduction, approaching it with continual, renewed interest.
Cage furniture is yet another method commonly employed to enhance the shelter environment (Wells, 2003). Dog beds and standard kennels are the most common forms of furniture implemented by shelter staff. Standard kennels are perceived as a dog’s den area and enhance privacy and security (Tynes, 2007). Kennels can also provide a dog with a platform to better see beyond their pens and increase social contact (Wells, 2003). Dog beds placed at the front of the kennel can promote adoption by facilitating more dog-visitor interaction.
Rescue shelters often subject dogs and visitors to unpredictable and intense noise. How does one go about voiding the negative effects of such distressing stimuli? One might introduce classical music to the environment. Canines in a rescue shelter demonstrated more relaxed behaviors (decreased barking, increased resting, etc.) when exposed to classical music (Wells, 2003). Neither human conversation nor pop music had any effect and heavy metal music actually increased agitation. Classical music also improved the mood of visitors and increased optimistic views of adoption.
As discussed earlier, dogs have an incredible sense of smell. How can shelter staff hinder the negative effects of shelter lifestyle by invoking on the sense that, undoubtedly, dogs value the most? They might think about introducing calming odors such as lavender or chamomile (Wells, 2003). When exposed to calming odors, dogs demonstrated an increase in relaxed behaviors. Interestingly, when canines were exposed to stimulating odors, such as peppermint, the canines were prompted into a state of pleasant excitability. Conspecific contact is another important resource providing environment enrichment to shelter dogs. Canines permitted visual conspecific contact spent more time at locations in their cage where they were able to see other dogs (Wells &ump; Hepper, 1998). Dogs are pack animals and have an inherent desire to be in close proximity to one another. Providing this needed contact may promote psychological well-being.
Wells expresses the importance of human contact on improving the environment for shelter dogs (2003). In many instances, canines have shown a preference for human companionship over conspecific contact (Hennessy, Williams, Miller, Douglas &ump; Voith, 1998). Physical interactions between canines and humans have shown a significant reduction of blood cortisol levels in both species. Effects were even greater for canines when the sex of the interacting human was female.
Equally important to a canine’s well-being at the shelter is their successful transition into a new home (Tuber et al., 1999). It is imperative that the shelter staff appear pleasant and accommodating to all visitors of their establishment. Initiating a relationship between new owners and the shelter increases the likelihood that the owner will reference the shelter as a first resource should any problems arise.
Rescue shelters could become even more proactive by starting behavioral therapies with animals currently in their care. This would allow rescue staff and volunteers to address behavioral deficits as soon as the canine is admitted. Such early intervention may provide individuals, planning on adopting from a rescue shelter, a relatively ‘problem-free’ dog. Training would also enable the rescue staff and volunteers to be proficiently skilled in executing canine behavioral therapies. As a result, shelters would be able to help community members eradicate problem behaviors and improve the bond with their pets. This would allow shelters to become a first resource, not just a final solution.

Part Two
Review of Personal Experiences
Since as far back as I can remember, I have always loved dogs! As a young girl, I would often beg my parents to let me adopt one, but they refused. My father was not keen on dogs and had a low tolerance for their typical behaviors.
I was determined to get a dog, despite my parents’ denial. Whenever I would encounter a dog unaccompanied by its owner, I would take it home with me. When I was confronted by my parents, I would cry and make up some elaborate story as to why we had to “rescue” that dog.

Dogs were not always like this. Overtime humans have domesticated dogs into making them loving pets. At one point dogs were able to pee wherever they want, eat whatever they want, and do whatever they want. Now we provide our dogs boundaries and train them to become our best friends. Eating and playing comes naturally to dogs just as it does to humans when they are born. Just like human babies one thing that does not come naturally to dogs is being potty trained. Adding a furry litte friend to the family sounds like a lot of fun and many would not think of it as such a difficult task to do since all dogs do is eat and play which obviously does not need to be taught to then but the hard part comes when it is time for them to relieve themselves and they choose do to this task on your living room floors, bedrooms, and bathrooms. ...compares in import to the dog here at Cold Antler Farm. Dogs get the lion’s share of attention, love, and care. They live in the house with me. They share my bed and furniture. They get the best medical attention, food, and effort I can afford. Dogs are not livestock to me. They are not children, siblings, or any other simulacrum of human interaction. They are my dogs. That is enough. I am a dog person. When I say that, I do not mean that as a subculture identifier. I do not spend my evenings in paw-print embroidered sweatshirts scouring Petfinder.com to foster homeless canines or sifting through breed-specific email lists. Dogs are not my hobby, occupation, or entertainment. When I say “I am a dog person,” I mean that my personhood is intensely connected to, and made better through, my life with dogs. They are my partners in living in this world. And I don’t mean “partners” as a replacement for a human spouse or family, not at all. I mean partners in the most basic way possible. They are my wingmen, staff, and teammates. We exist in a primal partnership that has sung the same long howl since before any human beings had surnames or used complex tools. We ran beside each other long before memory-foam dog beds and Nylabones. This partnership is ancient and ceremonial. It is the combination of two amazing stories, shared over meat and firelight. It is our legacy and privilege to share our lives with another beast so in tune and useful to us. Dogs chose us. Unlike cats, horses...

...Introduction: It is not unfamiliar to see lots of news that the dogs are treated in inhumane ways. In April this year, two junior high school students in Chunghwa post a video on the internet that they shoot at a chained dog on the street with BB guns, imitating an online surviving game for fun(謝忠義). After hundreds of netizens denounce their behavior, they modify their previous remark and say that they just want to protect themselves from dog’s attack. Besides, according to some shocked news(流浪狗悲歌), animal shelters in Taiwan house about 100,000 stray dogs and more than 60,000 of them are euthanized within a year. Some shelters even drag them brutally and pitiless, euthanize them without using the narcotic, and let them die in strong pain. In recent years, the controversial argument about human’s animal-consciousness is increasing. Seeing so many cases that expose the inhuman way imposed on dogs, some people start to think about the way they treat the dogs and manage to find more appropriate ways to solve these problems. For example, in Taiwan, the government has enacted the law, imposing heavy fines on the ones who abuse dogs in cruel way. Even in Germany, the government legislates for animal welfare in order to reduce the account of stray dogs(蔡喬丹). If violators dump dogs, they have to pay NT 900,000 or may be sentenced 2 years in jail. Recently, people constantly debate on animal protection. Some people think that it’s necessary to get rid of the animals which cost lots of...

...Dogs Dogs are warm blooded mammals. The term "domestic dog" is generally used for both of the domesticated and feral varieties. The English word dog comes from Middle English dogge, from Old English docga, a "powerful dog breed".[9] The term may possibly derive from Proto-Germanic *dukkōn, represented in Old English finger-docce ("finger-muscle").[10] The word also shows the familiar petname diminutive -ga also seen in frogga "frog", picga "pig", stagga "stag", wicga "beetle, worm", among others.[11] The term dog may ultimately derive from the earliest layer of Proto-Indo-European vocabulary, reflecting the role of the dog as the earliestdomesticated animal.[12] In 14th-century England, hound (from Old English: hund) was the general word for all domestic canines, and dog referred to a subtype of hound, a group including the mastiff. It is believed this "dog" type was so common, it eventually became the prototype of the category "hound".[13] By the 16th century, dog had become the general word, and hound had begun to refer only to types used for hunting.[14] Hound, cognate to German Hund, Dutch hond, common Scandinavian hund, and Icelandic hundur, is ultimately derived from the Proto-Indo-European *kwon- "dog", found in Sanskrit kukuur (कुक्कुर),[15] Welsh ci(plural cwn), Latin canis, Greek kýōn, and Lithuanian šuõ.[16] In breeding circles, a male canine is referred to as a dog, while a female is called a bitch[17] (Middle English bicche, from Old English bicce, ultimately from...

...Jesus Ojeda Top Five Guard Dogs There are top five dogs when it comes to guard and protection, according to Cesar Milan these are the top five dogs; the Bullmastiff, the Doberman, the Rottweiler, the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois. These dog breeds have characteristics that make them the best choice when looking for a guard or protection dog. The Bullmastiff is an English dog breed obtained by crossing 60% Mastiffs with 40% Bulldogs. This dog breed dates from 1795.The Bullmastiff was used as a game keeper’s do, even though they were fierce and threatening, they were trained not to bite the prey or in case of a house, the intruder. This breed had a darkish color. But when game keeper dogs were not required anymore, people stop caring about the dark color for night camouflage and so the light fawn coloration became more popular.(AKC, “Bullmastiff”) The Bullmastiff is docile and affective but if it’s provoked it becomes fearless. In the case of a guard dog if an intruder brakes into its territory the Bullmastiff wont attack in order to kill the intruder instead it will catch an intruder, take him down, hold him down and start barking to alert its owner. This breed is also good with children; it is intelligent, even-tempered, calm and loyal. The male Bullmastiff has a height of twenty-seven inches and weighs 133 pounds. They can do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They cannot tolerate extreme temperatures .With a life expectancy of ten years the Bullmastiff...

There are many things every dog should know, but sadly as we all know there are a lot of things (that are very important) that most dogs don't know. What it all comes down to is the trust an bond you have with your dog,  Remember, a good dog doesn't do tricks, a good dog listens and obeys out of respect not fear or dominance.  Step 1"No" & "Yes!" i * * The 1st "No" is not "NO!" and "Yes" should be "YES!!" When we first get our dogs we like to make sure they know who's boss. "No!" This word is thrown around very loosely around dogs. My belief is "No!" should be "No." Firm and calm, not controlling and angry.  Don't be fooled into thinking 'My dog is an ancestor of the wolf therefore i need to dominate him.' We domesticated dogs to work with us, so why are we so convinced that they don't want to respect us and listen to us? Dogs where created to do work on our behalf, any dog that is misbehaving is crying out for you to pay attention and to listen. There are very few cases where you do need to tend to the dog's behavior due to abuse and sociological damage; i seen several dogs with this problem their owners are very pleased with the work I've done.  Once you begin to work with your dog you must give the right responses.  for example: let's say you are trying to teach your dog the "Down" command.
