When it comes to Domestic violence, there is an automatic thought of just physical abuse. In an online course given by Innovative Educational Services, the course instructor defines domestic violence as “A pattern of coercive behavior designed to exert power and control over a person in an intimate relationship through the use of intimidating, threatening, harmful, or harassing behavior.” When hearing the words “Domestic Violence” people minds imagine a man abusing a woman in the worst way. Although women are the most effected by domestic violence, they are not the only ones that can be affected. Do individuals stop and think about a man playing the role as a victim? We tend to think that women are the only ones affected by domestic violence. Although women have the highest rates with 1 and 3 women being abused, 1 and 4 men have been victims of domestic violence. (NACDV) Not only have male and females been physically abused but sexually abused too. Statistics shows that almost half of female (46.7%) and male (44.9%) were victims of rape in the United States. Overall, in the United States, blacks experience higher rates of victimization than other groups. According to Susan Grossman and Marta Lundy “Black females experience intimate violence at a rate 35 percent higher than that of white females and 2.5 times higher than any other race.” As stated above, domestic violence is triggered by stress, unemployment and having little to no money. Poverty is very common in the African American communities and although domestic violence occurs across all income brackets, it is most commonly reported by the poor. In an article by Rana Sampson titled, “The Problem of Domestic Violence,” she states, “Victimization surveys indicate that lower-income women are, in fact, more frequently victims of domestic violence than wealthier women.” Even though, domestic violence affects more African Americans and more poor individuals, they each make up the social system.
Like any other social problem, condition, and situation there are risks factors to becoming a victim of domestic violence or being the person who does the abusing. Per CDC, “Not everyone who is identified as “at risk” becomes involved in violence.” Risk factors include Low income academic achievement, aggressive or delinquent behavior as a youth, heavy alcohol and drug use, having few friends and being isolated from other people and unemployment.
