We live in a world full of potentially harmful things. Germs, bacterias, viruses and diseases are just a few of them. Over a period of thousands of years mankind has survived many infections and pandemics, some of which wiped out large portions of people. The black death, the Spanish flu, tuberculosis, and cholera are just a few needles in a haystack of pandemics that mankind has survived over time. Unfortunately, when it comes to these types of things there is no such thing as "risk free." This is just a part of life. The only way for mankind to be at absolutely no risk at all would be for us to live in a completely sterile world, which is inevitably impossible. There are many things in life in which we can never be one hundred percent sure. Our health is one of them. However, there are many things we can do to increase the chances of avoiding certain diseases and viruses and such. Many of these things don't even cross our minds. Some of them are quite simple and even enjoyable. The immune system is designed to fight off disease. Maintaining a healthy immune system is a must. Acheiving accurate sleep is very important in order for our body not to be run down. Nutrition is also key to staying healthy, whether it be eating/drinking too much of what we shouldn't or not eating/drinking enough of what we should. Vitamin C is a well known friend of the immune system. Very commonly, when one becomes ill, orange juice is at the top or near the top of their grocery list. But it's not just orange juice that is high in Vitamin C. Many other fruits and fruit juices also contain this vitamin. These fruits and juices are quite easy to obtain as well. Most of the time they're readily available at the nearest grocery store or market. Many other fruits and vegetables also contain important vitamins that are extremely beneficial for the body. For those that aren't a fan of eating fruits and vegetables, both are available in juice form and in many different combinations. And for those that aren't a fan of either, there are many vitamin and mineral supplements that can be easily taken by mouth. Meat is also high in protein, which is very good for the body. There are also protein supplements for those that don't eat meat. Also, it is very important to keep the body hydrated. This is especially necessary if one is running a fever. Liquids high in antioxidants are especially helpful. But one simple, nearly always readily available liquid, is very important: water. Regular exercise can play a big role in one's health. Whether it be more strenuous exercises such as lifting weights, swimming and things of this nature or simple things such as running, jogging, or even just walking, the benefits are undeniable. These activities can help control high blood pressure as well as help prevent heart disease and maintain a healthy respiratory system. Being overweight can lead to certain diseases. These activities help control weight and boost energy. More energy leads to a better mood. In the world we live in it's virtually impossible to live without doctors. Life is not always fair and no one is exempt from the common cold, the flu, cancer, pandemics, plagues, etc. But the healthier one can be, the better chance the body has to fight off certain viruses and diseases. A combination of sleep, good nutrition, excercise, and numerous other things greatly strengthen our body and help it to maintain good health. When our body feels good, we also feel good, both physically and mentally. The better we treat our bodies, they better our bodies will treat us. Staying healthy is the best way to live a happier, longer life.

Story

...suffocating. Something was stuck in my throat and it hurt. I tried to scream but couldn?t. Around I heard loads of noise then. ?Call the doctor, she?s awake? then more commotion. I tried to move and my body wouldn?t let me. My stomach felt strange aswell. What was going on? I was talking to Marcus then he went away. I wanted him back. I needed him back. I don?t know how long later, but I was sitting up, with the help of loads of pillows, the tube gone from my throat and my throat still hurting. The doctors looked at me with some next looks. I wondered why they were looking at me like that. ?Can I see?? I tried to say but the words wouldn?t come out. ?You?ll find it hard to talk for a bit, take this? the nurse said and handed me a note book and pen. I scribbled furiously asking for water and Cubbz. The nurse took the sheet nodded and left. I don?t know how long but doctors and nurses kept going in and out, promising to make me see him as soon as they?d finished all their tests to check my brain and what not. What I really wanted to know was why my belly felt weird. Like something was growing in it. It felt so awkward. I knew I wasn?t pregnant because I couldn?t be? so what the hell? Maybe they?d put metal in my belly. The more I thought about it the more things made sense.  Maybe I damaged some organs and they had to be replaced. I nodded because it made sense. Some next guys walked in. They weren?t my family. I groaned. Who where these people? My question was soon answered.  ?Good...

Academic Writing

...Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, Tracy Larrabee, and Paul M. Roberts This report is based on a course of the same name given at Stanford University during autumn quarter, 1987. Here’s the catalog description: CS 209. Mathematical Writing—Issues of technical writing and the effective presentation of mathematics and computer science. Preparation of theses, papers, books, and “literate” computer programs. A term paper on a topic of your choice; this paper may be used for credit in another course. The first three lectures were a “minicourse” that summarized the basics. About two hundred people attended those three sessions, which were devoted primarily to a discussion of the points in §1 of this report. An exercise (§2) and a suggested solution (§3) were also part of the minicourse. The remaining 28 lectures covered these and other issues in depth. We saw many examples of “before” and “after” from manuscripts in progress. We learned how to avoid excessive subscripts and superscripts. We discussed the documentation of algorithms, computer programs, and user manuals. We considered the process of refereeing and editing. We studied how to make effective diagrams and tables, and how to find appropriate quotations to spice up a text. Some of the material duplicated some of what would be discussed in writing classes offered by the English department, but the vast majority of the lectures were devoted to issues that are specific to mathematics and/or computer science. Guest lectures by...

Medtronic Case Study

...had to be carried outside the body, Medtronic had achieved dramatic improvements in the functionality, size and reliability of these devices. In so doing it had extended the lives, and improved the quality of life, for hundreds of thousands of people in whom pacemakers had been implanted. The pacemaker has been designated as one of the ten most outstanding engineering achievements in the world over the past 50 years, along with the digital computer and the Apollo 11 moon landing. 1 Medtronic, which in 1995 booked operating profit of $300 million on revenues of $1.7 billion, had been founded in 1957 in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Earl Bakken, a researcher and inventor who had to his credit patents on several of the crucial technologies that led to the modern heart pacemaker. Pacemakers were small, battery-powered devices which, when implanted within a patient, helped a malfunctioning heart to beat in a steady, fixed rhythm. Because Medtronic was the first entrant into the pacemaker field and built a strong technological lead, it enjoyed a substantial portion (over 70%) of the market share for cardiac pacing through the 1960s. Building upon Medtronic’s legacy of leadership was not easy, however. In the face of increasing competition, rapid technological change and tightening market and regulatory demands for product quality, Medtronic saw its market share cut by more than half between 1970 and 1986. Though it had invested heavily in technology and product development...

...With the rising cost of health benefits and compensations many, companies are turning to a more feasible way to take care of health and wellness issues. It is becoming more practical and cost efficient to incorporate a health and wellness program into the company practice. Godfather

...not yet understand. “You acted like the worst kind of degenerates,” the judge said harshly. Yes, yes, thought Amerigo Bonasera. Animals. Animals. The two young men, glossy hair crew cut, scrubbed clean-cut faces composed into humble contrition, bowed their heads in submission. The judge went on. “You acted like wild beasts in a jungle and you are fortunate you did not sexually molest that poor girl or I’d put you behind bars for twenty years.” The judge paused, his eyes beneath impressively thick brows flickered slyly toward the sallow-faced Amerigo Bonasera, then lowered to a stack of probation reports before him. He frowned and shrugged as if convinced against his own natural desire. He spoke again. “But because of your youth, your clean records, because of your fine families, and because the law in its majesty does not seek vengeance, I hereby sentence you to three years’ confinement to the penitentiary. Sentence to be suspended.” Only forty years of professional mourning kept the...
