Salvation Army Thrift Store Essay

...The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country. The Salvation Army Thrift Stores are dedicated to raise money for its rehabilitation programs by selling donated used items such as clothing, housewares, and toys at a cheaper price for those in need (“History,” 2016). Like many other thrift stores, The Salvation Army thrift stores suffer from the increasing problem of waste disposal due to unwanted donations. While most people drop off easily sellable items, some donors are treating the thrift stores like garbage dumps, which forces the Salvation Army to pay huge amounts of money to dump its garbage. They state as their mission: “The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination” (2009). The Salvation Army application of rules for prior contributions, administrative performance, private contract arrangements, use of professional discretion and confidentiality, attachment to the workforce, and application of proper judgment (2005) allow for best practices to be applied. They also use means testing which applies an analysis of need less assets plus income. All of these factors speak well for them in making an evaluation of this organization. Salvation Army

... The Salvation Army was found by William Booth and his co-founder, his wife, Catherine. Booth started his career in ministry in 1852, longing to win the misplaced persons to Christ. He preached the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, homeless, and hungry walking the streets of London. Booth abandoned the conventional concept of church and began taking his message straight to the people. In 1865, Booth was invited to hold a series of meetings in the East End of London and his services became an instant success. This was an end to his wandering and traveling evangelist. He was known as a religious leader throughout London and he attracted individuals that were dedicated to fight for the souls of the women and men. Some of Booth’s first congregation was thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunks. His mission was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for their future spiritual guidance. Many churches did not accept Booth’s followers because of their past. He continued to give guidance and encouraged his followers to help others in need. In 1874 Booth had over 1,000 full time workers, including volunteers and nearly 50 evangelists, all serving under the name “The Christian Mission”. Booth read over a printer’s proof for the annual report of 1878 and noticed the statement “The Christian Mission is a volunteer army”. He crossed out the words “volunteer army” and wrote in “Salvation Army”. From these words the basis of The Salvation Army started The...

Salvation Army

...Abstract Introduction The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible and its ministry is motivated by the love of God. The mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. (The Salvation Army 2003) The Salvation Army is funded by donations and voluntary support. The national headquarters is located in Alexandria, Virginia, while London serves as the site of its international headquarters. It is organized using a military model, following a similar chain of command, including military titles for personnel, local bands, and banners. While these officers are necessary, committed volunteers are also essential to the success of this extensive ministry and its programs. Historical Roots In 1865, the Salvation Army was founded in London by William Booth, an English Methodist minister. First known as the "Christian Mission" to provide social welfare assistance to the residents of urban slums and save them from their sinful lifestyles of prostitution, gambling, and drunkenness, it was renamed in 1878. Military ranks and titles were assigned according to their responsibilities. His wife, Catherine, was co-founder. The "soldiers" preached openly in the streets. They promoted high ideals of service and commitment. Importance of the Salvation Army The Salvation Army is currently active in ninety-eight countries, using...

Grant Funding for Homeless Programs

...Grant Participation Part II 2 Grant Participation Part II The Salvation Army’s Alegria Program provides services to families who have a member living with HIV/AIDS and do not have any other housing options. Initially the program is set up in three phases. The first phase is emergency housing, and if need be clients then transfer into the transitional housing phase, and upon further stabilization (as well as vacancies) families then move into the third phase, which is permanent housing. The Salvation Army was seeking to fund 16 transitional housing units, and as a result applied for a government grant through LAHSA (The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority). The role of this writer was to contact appropriate departments in order to obtain certain documents so that they may be submitted along with the RFP. This was somewhat challenging because departments were inundated with requests from other programs due to the submission of grant renewals and quarterly reports . This writer had to make several attempts to obtain some of the paperwork. Departments contacted included: the finance department, in order to request copies of financial audit reports, as well as assurances, IRS paperwork demonstrating proof of nonprofit status, the development department in order to obtain information on current donations from donors, etc. This writer also had to communicate with the grants manager as well as the executive director of social services, and the executive director of...

...It was a lot but not as much as I wanted there to be. I gathered them all up and drove to the Salvation Army donation center in Fort Worth to drop off the contributions. They thanked me and I went on my way. I can agree that the drive went well, but it just did not go the way I wanted it to be. The concept was a good idea because of the demand for winter coats. I can admit that there should have been more detail in the drive. More detail could have caught people’s attention better. If I had people’s attention, I could have gotten the cause to many more people. In addition, the text messages and posts on social media were very unsuccessful. I only had three people donate who were not in my family. In reality, I should have posted it everywhere. For example, on social media, I only posted in on my personal account. What I should have announced...
