...Inside Petrobras, opinion on how to respond to Ecuador’s actions was divided. One group was inclined to rely on the Brazilian government to assist in fashioning a broader political solution, similar to what happened in 2006 in response to the Bolivian government’s changes to Petrobras’s gas exploration and development contracts with that country. Another group advocated that, as a public company, Petrobras should act accordingly and seek compensation through international arbitration, perhaps at the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (“ICSID”). (See Exhibit 2 for ICSID’s member States.) Petrobras When founded in 1953, Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled oil company, was a vital symbol of national pride. "The oil is ours" was an oft-repeated slogan. The company was incorporated as a mixed-capital company1 with a government-granted monopoly for all crude oil and gas production, refining and distribution in Brazil. In 1997, Brazil enacted the so-called “Petroleum Law” to end the oil monopoly and open the oil and gas markets in Brazil to foreign investment. Restrictions on ownership by non-governmental entities of shares in Petrobras were lifted and foreign ownership of shares was permitted. In response to these changes, in August 2000, Petrobras was partially privatized through a listing of its shares (ADRs*) on the NYSE. As part of the company’s new strategy, it also sought additional opportunities to expand abroad. Petrobras’ International Expansion ...

...In every corps there are older members that spend their time telling false tales about how scary tour is, but one thing they never lie about is hitting a wall. A wall has many varying long and short term affects on a person. When first faced with one most rookies get extremely discouraged and go home. However the ones that stay and try to push through don't have it any better. The rookies that stay have to deal with different issues from tour including their wall. All of the different affects of a wall wear down on people although in the end that person has to fight it or go home. Anyone who has ever hit a wall says that crashing is the easily part but overcoming it is the real mountain to climb. The base to overcoming it is being surrounded by really supportive people. Having a good staff and corps to be around is one of the best support groups to have, because no one else knows exactly what it's like. In the end the only person who can make the final push is the person facing the way. Finally getting through it is a huge accomplishment because it is something that, that in the end did on their own. Facing a wall is like facing your worst demons. Stories from veterans and alumni make it seem almost impossible to do. Even with all the different affects a wall has on everyone. A way to push through is best found with staff and fellow corps members, and especially by one pushing themselves. In the end triumphing over any wall is the best thing anyone can do....

...I read it but I don’t get it[1] The title of my article is a title of a book by Cris Tovani but more of that later! I want to explore why I feel that Ken Rowe’s literacy report misses the complexity of literacy development in young people– at least from my secondary perspective. Of course he covers some bases and on the surface suggests a balanced approach. He is also right that teachers need to be better educated about reading practices. However, the emphasis on phonics which has been widely reported in the media appears disproportionate to its usefulness. Some students can manage to read and spell without phonics so why do we need to occupy their brains with phonemes or phonic practices. Others need them. The informed primary teacher differentiates accordingly. What Ken Rowe does not focus on is the literacy needs of young people in secondary schools where decoding is less of a problem than comprehension. For many students reading is meaningless – particularly fiction. The Four Resource Model of Allan Luke and Peter Freebody[2] outlines what students need to do as they read: Effective literacy draws on a repertoire of practices that allow learners, as they engage in reading and writing activities, to: • break the code of texts: recognising and using the fundamental features and architecture of written texts including: alphabet, sounds in words, spelling, conventions and patterns of sentence structure and text • participate in the meanings...

...How to write a Literature Review: Step 1: Read a lot. Sounds simplistic, but the fact is that you do have to read a lot, and read with care and purpose. There are things that you can do within the process to make your life easier, and the purpose of this short document is to point some of them out. Hopefully, this will help. However, there is no substitute for good, thorough, and hard work. When you start your reading, start broadly. If you have an area you are interested in, such as computers in education, multi-media, distance education, web-based instruction, or some other specific concentration, start your reading in those areas. Course assigned reading will help, but you will have to branch outwards and inwards. Don’t be afraid to follow an area that seems not to be related to your area. You are trying to define your interests. Allow yourself the freedom to do that. Here are some tips on how you might branch out, and/or focus in: A. Look carefully at the references. Should the author raise a salient point that interests you and they happen to cite somebody, look up the citation and read the original source. The original source will have its own references, follow these. Repeat as necessary. B. Read from tangentially related fields. Don’t be afraid to look outside of the literature in IT to other areas. Educational Psychology, Human Resources, Computer Science, and Communications Studies are but a few of the related fields with important information...

...Using the SQ3R Study Method A. Kent Van Cleave, Jr., Ph.D. Why use a study method? Perhaps you have noticed recently that everyone, especially in the news media, is talking about something called the information revolution. This term refers to some profound changes that have affected most aspects of our lives and that have been caused by computers. In the workplace, information technology has caused many work organizations to completely restructure themselves. Electronic data interchange has helped companies closely link themselves with their customers and their suppliers. Computers have made mass production obsolete by giving manufacturers the ability to customize the product exactly the way the individual customer wants it. (Look for the big auto manufacturers to have Websites soon where you choose nearly every feature on your car, apply for a loan to buy it, and then specify where it will be delivered, all without having to go to the showroom.) Computers have also automated many jobs, including those of many middle managers. The result of this has been fewer levels of management in large organizations and higher productivity in the production facility. For most products, the cost of the goods on store shelves has dropped dramatically over the last ten years. But this explosion of information technology has its challenges in the workplace, too. Because of it the pace of change has increased. Work organizations find that they must continually adapt as technology progresses...

ROJAS Language Education Consultant (732) 940-1860 VPRojas@aol.com 3-12 Reading Strategies Anticipation Guides (Barton & Heidema, 2000) - Anticipation guides have two columns labeled ‘me’ and ‘text.’ Before reading the text, students place a check next to any statement with which they agree. After reading the text, students compare their opinions with information contained in the text. Examples: An example for a math anticipation guide on statistics might look like the following: Me ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Text ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ 1. There are several kinds of averages for a set of data. 2. The mode is the middle number in a set of data. 3. Range tells how far apart numbers in a data set can be. 4. Outliers are always ignored. 5. Averages are always given as percentages. An example for a science anticipation guide on matter might look like the following: Me ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ Text ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Matter is made up of elements. An element is made up of many different atoms. An element is the same thing as a compound. Most compounds are made up of molecules. Elements are represented by chemical symbols. Check Those Facts! (Stephens & Brown, 2005) - This strategy serves a dual purpose: to help students become better judges of internet information and to allow students to explore an area of interest related to...

...Life of Pi Theme of Religion At times, Life of Pi reads like a defense of religion. Has science proved religion wrong? Here's a protagonist who believes passionately in both zoology and religion. What about the fact of multiple faiths? Don't these faiths contradict each other, cause wars, and other problems? Here's a protagonist who is Muslim, Christian, and Hindu – all at the same time. The book defends not only the common spirit behind these three religions, but the rituals and ceremonies of each. It's as if all three religions find harmonious common ground in this character. Seems unlikely, but then again, the protagonist argues passionately that the miraculous happens in our darkest moments. Quote #1But I don't insist. I don't mean to defend zoos. Close them all down if you want (and let us hope that what wildlife remains can survive in what is left of the natural world). I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both. (1.4.14) | Do zoos incarcerate animals in confined spaces and make them miserable? Pi doesn't think so: "Certain illusions about freedom" tempt us to this conclusion. In actuality, an animal's life in the wild is more circumscribed than "a knight on a chessboard" (1.4.8). Predator-prey relationships restrict the animal's movement. A zoo enclosure is actually more like a hearth for an animal: a place of comfort and rest. Likewise, most people think of religion as a restrictive...

...LIFE OF PI (BOOK REVIEW) PRESENTED BY : Raja Haider Ali (29658) Shayan Bashir (30205) Abdul Hannan(28919) Abdul samad(28115) Submitted to: MAAM PARVEEN PASHA Biography of Yann Martel How does he look like? I think he looks better with his hair cropped Birth date: June 25, 1963 He’s a Quebecer His first language is French. This is evident in Life of Pi constituting Pi’sname, Piscine, which is French for ‘swimming pool’ and denotes Pi’s mamaji love for pools and his father enthusiasm for them. As an adolescent he attended high school at Trinity College School a boarding school in Port Hope, Ontario. That’s a day after my birthday Meaning he’s French Canadian As an adult, Martel has spent time in Iran, Turkey and India. Not only that Martelimmersed himself in the Indian culture to accurately create his main character. Life of Pi is set in India and Pi’s childhood is stein Pondicherry, a state of India. It is a former French colony in India. The actual zoos in Pondicherry does not have any animals larger than a deer. The other places in India that are referenced in the novel are Manner (the destination for the Patel families vacation) in Kerala, and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Martel spent 13 months in India visiting mosques, churches, temples and zoos, and spent two years reading religious texts and castaway stories. ...There was no detail as to the writing style, nor why or how the author was able to keep reader’s attention. The reviewer also failed to explain why he/she did not like the main character at points in the book. With no further details, this review does not help someone interested in the book decide whether they may like it or not. 3. Fake Review – As I was looking for reviews on the book I’m reading for the critical review project, I Don’t Have a Thing to Wear: The Psychology of Your Closet, I found a title of a review that struck me as odd and the review itself was a bit over the top which to me comes off as fake. It was rated five stars and the review appears to be written by a girl’s boyfriend stating that “she can’t put it down” and “she just raves about it constantly” (Bouton, 2003). The one part that really puts me off about this review is that he says “and I wish I had a nickel for each time I've heard a woman shout out the title of this book” (Bouton, 2003). This is one review I would definitely ignore if I had been deciding whether to read the book or not. 4. Stupid / Ridiculous Review – The trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot of good, bad and stupid reviews. One review that stood out to me as ridiculous is by a reviewer on amazon.com who rated the book two stars but commented...

...Title : “Don’t Ask…Don’t Tell…Don’t Be All You Can Be!” I) Introduction: a) Don’t ask don’t tell or commonly known as DADT is a law that passed in congress in 1993 that requires the discharge of openly gay, lesbian and bisexual active members of the US Armed Forces. Under this law the Military will discharge any member, who engage in homosexual conduct, which is defined as a homosexual act, a statement that the member is homosexual or bisexual, or a marriage or attempted marriage to someone of the same gender. b) THESIS – The law passed by congress “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” should be placed as an inactive piece of legislature spoils the American spirit, does not leave much room for the younger generations of today to put faith in our government and costs tax payers extra money that they do not have due to the crashing economy. II) I plan to construct an argument that DADT should be placed as inactive piece of legislature by using the argument by narration. I plan to tell the stories of a few service members that have been discharged from the military because of this law. III) There are a few opposing arguments from those in congress that support it that I plan on analyzing and trying to show the weakness in their arguments as to why DADT should remain active. IV) The audience should care about this topic because having the DADT law as an active piece of legislature costs us money not to mention the lives of able bodied people who are willing to...

...Homosexuality in the Military John P. Wernegreen DeVry University Professor Foley Homosexuality in the Military The issue of homosexuality in the military has long been considered a taboo subject, not to be discussed openly, and essentially prohibited with the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy established in the 1990’s. However, attitudes have changed and evolved over the years making homosexuality in general less of a stigma and more of an acceptable lifestyle that some people live. After much deliberation and research, the Department of Defense (DOD) has established its own set of rules and regulations, thus continuing the controversy and discrimination of homosexuality within its ranks and the redefining of its regulations. Beginning in 1916, the United States military began issuing an administrative discharge called a blue discharge. This discharge, also known as a “blue ticket,” was neither honorable nor dishonorable, but it “became the discharge of choice for commanders seeking to remove homosexual service members from the ranks…” (Serving, para. 1). The policy for discharging service members found to be homosexual or engaging in homosexual acts prior to these “blue tickets” was to court-martial them for sodomy, imprison them and subsequently dishonorably discharge them. When the United States began to mobilize troops in World War II, though, it was no longer practical to hold court-martials due to time constraints and troop movements, so commanders began administratively...

...Life of Pi – Inquiry Essay The important thing isn’t that we can live on love alone, but that life isn’t worth living without it. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the author shows that Richard Parker is part of Pi, and is necessary for his survival. This is shown at the end of the novel when Pi reaches Mexico with Richard Parker’s help of survival. However, there are two different versions to Pi’s story, and there is no physical proof of Richard’s existence other than his word. Life isn’t worth living without hope, Richard Parker is necessary for Pi’s survival because he gives him a reason to survive, provides companionship, keeps him from feeling hopelessness. Firstly, Richard Parker is essential for Pi’s survival. He is essential for Pi’s survival because Richard Parker has the strength and viciousness necessary to survive. In the end of the book it is revealed that Richard Parker is Pi. Richard Parker is just a figment of Pi’s imagination a creation of Pi’s mind to help him cope with seeing his mother killed and the rest of the bad experiences he had after the ship sunk. Pi created Richard in order to conjure up those traits that he needs in order to survive; Richard is strong, fierce, and terrifying, whereas Pi is complete opposite. He creates a strong fierce animal with a personality that is capable of doing things he can't, but has to in order to survive. Richard Parker is just Pi’s dark side. He keeps Pi sane, despite of his terrible deeds. In other words, he...
