...December 2012 Commuting vs. Dorming The hardest decision a student has to make during their senior year of high school is which school to attend and whether to live on campus or commute. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both scenarios. The entire college experience is a learning trip and it is oftentimes a young adults first step towards independence. Living on campus is an adjustment and is a huge eye-opener to the real world. The college dorm life is considered to be part of the "full college experience," but the costs of living in a residence hall can persuade students to remain home while they are in college in order to avoid housing fees. The biggest advantage of living on campus is that it gives you a chance to gain independence. Some students know they want to move out of the house but aren't quite sure they're ready to have their own apartments. Living on campus can provide an in-between step (Lyons 1). Students will still be living on their own and responsible for taking care of their living space, it just wont be as overwhelming as paying rent and everything else that comes with owning an apartment. Another great thing about living on campus is you are much closer to your classes so it will take much less time to get there. The point of view in which the story is written is of Sam and Beth Brooks, two siblings who have been separated at Christmas in 2004, with Sam on vacation away from home and Beth forcibly staying at university for a swim meet that she must attend. I believe that the author chose to write from these perspectives because both characters are greatly affected greatly by the main plot, though dealing with it in two different situations. Sam is experiencing the entire story from Phuket, Thailand, where they are hit with a tsunami. Beth was in New York at her dorm, first learning about the tsunami from her boyfriend, Tad. Both characters have different feelings about what has happened, and we, as the readers, get to hear both perspectives. 2. The story takes place on the one hand in Phuket, Thailand during Christmas break of 2004, and on the other side of the world in New York, where Beth's dorm and university are located. The difference that the setting makes is that if most of the characters were not located in Thailand where the tsunami happened, and majority of the story did not take place there, we would only be privy to secondary information of what was happening. Even before you graduate you have to pick everything from what you're going to wear today to what school you are going to spend the next four or more years at. Several pro's and con's partake in coming to a decision on where you will lay your head every night. You get to start early as a baseball player so that you can become acclimated with class and morning workouts. You are taken on a weeklong athlete orientation called Summer Bridge a week before summer classes begin. You along with other freshman athletes get to become familiar with the campus and what is expected out of an athlete here at Florida State. During the week, you are grouped with people from other sports so that you can get to know other people besides your teammates. In your group you do small bonding exercises and team work activities. One activity was a campus scavenger hunt where you have to take pictures in front of certain buildings and this allows you to get familiar with your new school.
