Doubek Medical Supply and Pharmacy is a family owned business that has been in my family for three generations. The company is located in Alsip, Illinois and has served Chicago area residents for over 60 years. Over the summers, I multitask at the company helping with small duties around the building to help effectiveness. Currently, document scanning and organizing is my main role because the company is working on getting rid of all files, and becoming paperless. Walking to my desk, one can see a table set up with stacks and stacks of white papers that cover the whole table. All of these papers are patient files that need to be scanned into the system, then organized so workers can easily find each customer and run through their history. Scanning …show more content…
The original building was located at 6224 South Pulaski in Chicago, but later moved and is now located at 11350 S Cicero Ave in Alsip, IL. My great grandfather RJ, always put other before himself, even when those people were strangers proving to have good ethics and morals. He always wanted to take care of people no matter what the circumstances. In 1959, my grandfather and RJ’s son, decided to join the family business. My grandfather earned his bachelors of pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Years later in 1979, my grandmother named Dorothy, or Grandma “Dot” as all the grandkids call her, joined the family business to include a medical supply category. As former lead nurse at Rush University, my grandmother helped the company grow for about 20 years. Today, all three of my grandparent’s children have a role in the company. My father, David, is the president of the company after graduating with a Finance degree from Creighton University. My aunt, Debra, works as head pharmacist after also graduating from Creighton’s school of Pharmacy. Lastly, the oldest of the kids, Tom works as head of marketing, after graduating from DePaul. Years ago, my father and other family members in charge of appointing managers picked the heads of the department based on the time that the employees have worked there. My father quickly realized that this was not the correct way to appoint important positions such as managers. At the company, the utilitarian approach is used because when making decisions, they always ask the question, “When working out this issue, what is the best thing for the company?” They ask this question because without the company, no one will be employed. Collectivism and ethnocentrism can be good ways to describe how the company works because of the accountability each employee holds for one another, while being a friendly, family
