There are many different ways in how to download files and programs from the internet. A popular way is clicking on a website’s link to that particular file. By doing this, you are requesting that a file be accessed and downloaded to your computer in the following directory. If the file or program link is clicked, it is common that the web server has set the attributes to that file to be accessed given that you are authorized to make the request. Most likely the website will have code imbedded within the link so all you have to do is click the link and your file will be downloaded. A different way to perform this function is to simply right click on the link and select “save target as…” feature. By right clicking, you are opening up a properties list for that frame or link. Saving backgrounds or images can be done with this technique as well. There are other ways to download files or programs from the internet besides simply clicking a hyperlink. Within Linux, the WGET or APT-GET (advanced packaging tool) feature allows you to either upgrade or add any new packages, or download a file/program from a specific URL. Linux is not the only operating system to be known of downloading files through a console or terminal. In Windows, you can connect to an FTP server, such as your own and download contents directly by ftp within the command prompt using telnet or another add-on script/program for the command prompt.
