What America Needs More Of

Most citizens today do not realize that some people of all races, diversities, and cultures have contributed to the United States in some way. Some examples are in medicine, science, and even construction. In this essay I will be discussing Dr. Bennet Omalu’s contribution to the medical field as well as how it effects our lives today.

Dr. Omalu was born in September 1968 Idemili, South Nigeria and went to the University of Nigeria graduating with his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Dr.Omalu holds eight advanced degrees and Board Certifications, later he received fellowships in Pathology and Neuropathology through the University of Pittsburgh .Today Dr. Omalu is the chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California followed by being the president and medical director of Bennet Omalu Pathology. …show more content…
Omalu was the first to identify, describe and name Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) as a disease entity in football players and wrestlers.It all started as when Dr. Omalu was performing an autopsy on the former Pittsburgh Steelers center Mike Webster in 2002. Dr. Omalu says Mike Webster died and suffered from cognitive and intellectual impairment, destitution, mood disorders, depression, drug abuse, and suicide attempts. Although Mike Webster brain looked completely normal Dr. Omalu conducted independent and self financed brain tissue analyses. Dr. Omalu suspected that Webster suffered from dementia pugilistica, dementia induced by repeated blows to the head a condition found previously in boxers.Dr. Omalu conducted even more tests using specialized staining and found large accumulations of tau protein in Webster’s brain, which affects mood, emotions, and executive functions similar to the way clumps of beta amyloid protein contribute to Alzheimer's
