Background of Interviewee
I chose to interview Dr. Michael Bevis, who is currently the Dean of Trades and Industry at Emily Griffith Technical College in Denver, CO. Dr. Bevis has been with the institution since July of this year, and from our conversation it was easy to see that his professionalism and dedication to his position, and the students, is unmistakable. Prior to his current position, Dr. Bevis was employed as an associate dean, and an academic affairs regional director. His education is quite extensive as he holds a bachelor’s degree, three masters’ degrees, and a PhD.
Interview Questions
When a legal issue arises, how is it handled? Are there any legal issues you are dealing with currently?
Dr. Bevis responded by informing me of the organizational/ administrative structure of their institution, by explaining how The Emily Griffith Technical College (EGTC) used to be co-mingled with the Denver Public Schools (DPS) budget until a recent change separating the two. Although it was removed from their [DPS] operating budget, and considered a separate entity, the ability to share common resources was preserved; in this case, one of those resources is the legal department. Bevis has a true passion for teaching, leading, and caring; it is quite evident when he speaks about the schools’ programs. By putting the students first, and being dedicated to helping them realize and achieve their personal goals, he has fostered a positive learning environment that has transformed many lives. Because of the unique learning environment at EGTC, which sometimes has 16 year olds working and studying next to 45 year olds, and the industry partners that meet quarterly to share needs-based assessments with the school, the success of the program can be quantified in their placement success; which incidentally is approaching
