At first glance, Dr. Keith Huey is a towering giant with glasses. At 6’ 6’’, the man is a monster of many old time legends. Though his size is intimidating, when he speaks, I can barely hear him over the silence that pervades his office. As he answers my questions, Huey thinks through every answer thoughtfully; he knows that a man’s words make him. In every way, the man is as quiet and gentle as his speech. For Dr. Huey, it’s all about God and his work. Dr. Keith Huey, 53, seeks exactly this. For Huey his entire childhood, parentage, professional, and personal lives focus on this concept.

Not the typical 8am class. Usually, in most students sleep through early classes, but not this one. Both professors, Minister Adam Hill and Dr. Keith Huey were very lively and demonstrated clear knowledge about their subject. While sitting in this class, I thoroughly enjoyed the material, and I learned about all kinds of information regarding the Council of Nicaea, The First and Second Councils of Ephesus, and theologians’ discussion about Christ’s nature. My head hurt as the class concluded, but I knew that I had just found Dr. Huey in his natural, preferred habitat. As a professor and head of Rochester College’s Bible Department since 2004, Dr. Huey had not initially imagined that he would have landed at a job as a professor. In fact, ironically, he started as far away as a possible from a teaching position: he began as a registrar in the academic services department in 2000. When one of the teachers that taught church history retired and he was offered the job, Dr. Huey could not believe it. “ I could not believe that this job landed in my lap. I believe that if someone is willing to work hard and pay their dues, they can get want,” Dr. Huey said. “That did not happen to me.

Huey’s life causes him to look on life with regret, but while he was a volunteer at the Shultz Luis Children’s Home in 1998, a boy on Dr. Huey’s team’s watch drowned. “[T]hings in life [happen] that you can see coming, but that loss was not one of them. We were devastated.”
To make matters worse, his older sister Janice died in 2003 from cancer. Her death made life difficult for him as he mourned her loss, despite the fact that he understood the possibility that she could die from her sickness. Nothing can ever prepare a person for a family member’s loss.
With all the losses, though, there have been even greater gains. In September this year, his eldest daughter Allyson married Caleb Stinnett. Both of them met at Rochester College, and now have excellent jobs. His other two daughters, Caroline and Annika both are enrolled at Rochester College. He has been married to his wife Barbara Huey for almost three decades. For all the twists and turns life has given him, Dr. Huey looks at life with optimism, and plans to emulate his parents’ pathway through his teaching at Rochester College. His goal is to help students realize a need for Christ in their
