The psychologist I have chosen to write about is Dr. Kenneth B Clark. Kenneth Bancroft Clark was an American psychologist and an educator. Clark was the first African American to be a full teneured professor at the city college of New York where he taught from 1942 through 1975, and to be a member of the New York State board of regents. Kenneth B Clark was the author of a 1950’s report done on racial discrimination that was cited in the 1954 U.S. supreme court decision Brown V Board of education of Topeka, Kans. An early leader in the civil rights movement he founded the North side Center For Child Development and Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited. Clarks work includes, Prejudice And Your Child and Dark Ghetto, just to name a couple. I believe Kenneth Clark made some very important discoveries for the world of psychology. Clark got into the minds of African American children and let the world see how they thought, how they felt, and what they believed from growing up in a caucasion dominated society. One of Clark’s most well known tests was on a group of African American children. The test was called the “Doll Test”. What Clark did was he took a caucasion baby doll and a African American baby doll and put them side by side, then he asked a series of questions to each individual child one at a time. Some of the questions asked by Clark were questions like, which doll is prettier, which doll is smarter, and which doll would you rather have and why?. The results of this test shocked many people including me but at the same time shed some positive light on what young African American children deal with and think about when it comes to the color of skin. One of the articles was written by Dr. Henry Tomes, APA executive director for public interest. This author was a disappointed fan of Kenneth Clark. The author had wrote in December 2002 the review of general psychology issued its list of the top psychologists of the 20th century. As the author expected their were names of Sigmund Freud, Ivan Paulov, and Bf Skinner on the list but as he said, “I was shocked to not see the name of Kenneth Clark” (Dr. Henry Tomes, 2002) The author then goes on to talk about Clarks ground breaking discoveries in the world of psychology, in 1994 Clark received APA’s lifetime achievement award only the 6th time it was bestowed. The second article was written by Richard Severo of the New York Times may 2nd 2005. Severo wrote that “Clarks studies greatly and significantly impacted in schools for children”. (Richard Severo, 2005) The author wrote about the Brown V Board of Education case. He talked about how Dr. Clark was one of the greatest national authorities on integration, and how his effects were particularly profound in New York City and New York State. Mayors and governors consulted him and he expressed firm views about virtually every delicate racial matter from school bussing to housing discrimination. It is very easy to compare these two articles, both of the authors obviously felt that Dr. Clark was a great man and he accomplished many great things in his time on this earth. They seen what he had done for the young African American children of our country and how greatly he impacted the United States Of America in such a positive way. Dr. Clark’s discoveries and accomplishments in both psychology and racial issues will be remembered through his legacy and carried on for a very long time to come.
