...How Representation of James Bond characters has changed since October 5th 1962 ‘007 licenced to kill, HM Secret Service agent’ ‘The description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way.’ (Wikipedia descriptions) The above description defines the word ‘representation’ in a way in which can be understood by anyone. The term has a whole new level of meanings that would take more than twelve words to describe and that which I plan to go into in-depth detail about. This case study will map out why the term ‘representation’ is so prominent in the ongoing fifty-year old thriller sequel, James Bond, how influential it can be on a persons opinion, and the way in which it shapes a whole film. Representation may or may not have shaped not only the way we see the characters but the way in which we look at features after the film has been made, for example, do we view stockbrokers on Wall Street the same now as we did before the Oscar winning film ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ was produced? Or do we assume that every secret agent is just like James Bond? Michael Wilson, producer of Skyfall and screenwriter of many of the 007 films, says: ‘the film character of James Bond is always dependent on the actor who plays him and the time at which the film is made because Bond always lives in the contemporary time the films are made.’ The representation of characters in films is vital to how we view a film and whether we take an instant like or dislike to the character....

...States is seven years removed. Colin Powell has just retired as Chairman of the Chief Joints of Staff and decorated as a war hero in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm and is relaxing in his place of residence in Palm Beach, Florida. All of the sudden while watching TV, a big loud thunderous crash is heard and Powell runs to the back yard to see what is going on. As he reaches the back yard, a funny looking vessel is sitting in his rose garden. As he goes to open the hatch, he is sucked in and bam, in the speed of light he is transformed back in time. After re-landing in the middle of a road, Powell opens the door to complete darkness and woods. The next thing that Powell sees is two men on horseback saying the British are coming, the British are coming. He stops one rider and Powell asks who are you and what year is it? The man replied, “ I am Sir Paul Revere and it is in the year of the our Lord 1777. Could this be, could he have stepped back into time, why him, why now? Colin starts walking and finally after two miles of bare and naked road, Powell stubbles upon a farm house and walked up to the door and knocks. “Who is thou at thyest door?” shouted from the house. Colin replies, “I am General Powell from the United States Amry.” The patriot upons the door and is startled by the appearance of the man. Holding a latern and dressed in Revolutionary style uniform, the guy eventually allows Powell to enter into his home. He asks Powell who he is and where he came from...

...The leader whom I researched is Retired General Colin Powell. He grew up in a tough neighborhood, educated in the public school system and went to City College in New York. After completing the schools ROTC’s program and graduating, Colin Powell was commissioned as an Army second lieutenant. He held many leadership positions to include National Security Advisor during the Reagan Administration, becoming the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest position in the Defense Department, and becoming the first African –American to become Secretary of State during the Bush administration. Colin Powell received some of the best training the military, and the country, but stands out from his peers as being one of the few individuals who can traverse political party lines and lead diverse individuals and organizations. He said “leaders must be passionate, demonstrate selflessness, and empower their people to do their jobs.” Below are some examples that show why he exhibits the 7 competencies of an effective leader: Ethics Competency: Colin Powell shows ethics competency by having the knowledge, skills and abilities to incorporate values and principles that distinguish right from wrong. When he was the National Security Advisor he found that he product the military produced seldom did not meet the policy maker’s needs. “He believed that it was his responsibility to initiate change in strategy and he did not want to be accused of not responding to world events.”...

...Star ... JetStar Bond ... James Bond. Anything sounds cool when you say it like Sean Connery. Right? For example, say this out loud in a semi-Scottish accent, "Cards ... Playing Cards." It's even cooler when you see James Bond actually playing with cards. It's as if Bond confirms something we all know. Pasteboards are hip and in style. And while Q hasn't invented anything subversive with fifty-two pieces of paper and two jokers, we can only continue to hope. For now though, let's just relish in the fact that James Bond has featured several different types of cards throughout the illustrious franchise. The aim of this piece isn't to catalog every deck the MI6 agent has ever played with. While that would make for a wonderful article, I'd like to discuss one deck in particular that was supposedly seen in the 1964 box-office smash hit GOLDFINGER. Before your read any further though, close your eyes and think of all the types of decks used in the academy award winning Bond flick. For those of you who immediately conjure up the thought of a cheating Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe) and his unaware opponent playing a game of Gin using a red deck of Aristocrat 727 Banknote playing cards poolside in Miami at the Fontainebleau Hotel, then you have a great memory! However, the cards in question are not the famous High Finished Aristocrats. What? There's another deck in this movie? Apparently. A deck of cards is supposedly shown in a scene on a Lockheed JetStar airplane that's piloted...

...Colin Powell MGT 230 Colin Powell Paper General Colin Powell is a retired Joint Chiefs of Staff and over the last decade or two is considered an exceptional leader. Many people in all walks of life and industry admire him and try to look to him for inspiration when leading people in calm moments and in crisis situations. He has shown his leadership abilities during war and times of peace. He has a wealth of knowledge and insight as a leader and can help anyone who is striving to be a people manager or is currently in any position of managing people. It does not matter what setting or situation you are managing in, his experiences will translate. Slide One As I read through the Colin Powell leadership slides provided I found three of them that really remind me of situations I found my self in at one time or another. The Lesson One slide I can really relate to the quote that General Powell uses. I have been in retail management for 17 years and I have had the opportunity to manage hundreds of employees, managers, and supervisors. Whether a manger realizes it or not, being a manager does not only mean you lead people under your direct supervision, but you also have to manage your co-managers and superiors above you. This is especially true in a corporate setting. Good leadership does not mean you have to please everyone around you. There will be times when you have to make difficult decisions. Recently, I found myself in a situation in which I had to make a difficult...

...Colin Powell: A Leader of Leaders Otis V. Rockmore LDR/300 May 20, 2013 Frank Futyma Colin Powell: A Leader of Leaders In choosing an individual to report on, I wanted to find someone that I could identify with and relate to on some level. With this in mind and having served 20 years in the military and understanding its dynamics, the obvious choice was to choose a military leader. With so many great leaders to choose from, I wanted to choose an individual that demonstrated the ability to be a successful leader in the private or political arena as well. After researching various leaders that had accomplished such task, I chose Colin L. Powell. Colin L Powell was born April 5 1937 in Harlem, New York. He is a United States statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State (2001-2005), serving under President George W. Bush. He was the first African American appointed to that position. He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) (“Colin Powell”, 2013). Leader According to Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2009), leadership has various definitions that differ in many ways. One states that leadership can be defined as “Directing and coordinating the work of group members” and the other states it as “The process by which an agent induces a subordinate to behave in a desired manner (Chapter 1). While these...

...War on Terrorism Case Study Analysis GM530 Managerial Decision Making Week6 Assignment Keller Graduate School of Management Ravi Murugan February 14 2011 Prof. Marc Friedman Discuss the different decision personalities/styles advising Bush. Bush’s war cabinet consisted of a select group of senior administration officials. They were George Bush, Richard Cheney, Andrew Card, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, George Tenet, Robert Mueller, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Henry Shelton, Paul O’Neill, Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Armitage who held secret meetings for weeks and had experience in foreign affairs. Five of these people planned and executed the Persian Gulf War with bush’s father and so had his trust (Cheney, Rice, Powell, Wolfowitz and Armitage). For our personalities discussion I am selecting just the key persons who were advising or feeding input on different matters. i) George W. Bush: He prefers to lead by setting a broad direction and delegating responsibilities to trusted subordinates and leans heavily on his advisors. He is careful in his selection and chooses loyal people who are given goals and left to work on it. His lack of foreign policy experience contributed to his heavy reliance on his counsel and advisors. He knew how to delegate authority and hold people accountable for their responsibilities and authority. He listened more and then made a decision, which he stands firm to. He is more of not the details oriented person but draw a clear outline...

As such, it came has no surprise that a love of languages developed. I have attained the ability to flourish in an unfamiliar environment. Last summer, for example, I was employed by the Jamaica Defence Force and assigned to the Pharmacy within the Medical Company. I had no prior knowledge or experience, yet I was able to satisfactorily complete my tasks. I have been told I am a good listener and a moderately good speaker. These characteristics will aid me in my chosen field. “A dream doesn't become reality through magic. It takes sweat, determination and hard work.” - Colin Powell. I believe that one must work hard in order to make one’s dream a reality. I plan to become a Medical Scientist who carries out “ground breaking” research that will shed light on currently confounding illnesses. To that end, I will use software simulations to aid my research. As such, I swear to uphold and exceed all that is expected of a future medical scientist, supporting the progress of medicine and...

...One of most beautiful canyons in the world, has gone to waste. As the beautiful ecosystem, and wildlife was destroyed by dam. Glen Canyon is no longer what it was before the dam. The reason why his words are ineffective for reaching his audience is because, he’s only talking about the ecosystem around him not in the whole entire world. When someone reads his essay they will figure out that it is biased, because he’s only talking about the problems that he has with this one dam and not any others. Also these are his opinions, not everyone feels the way he does. Abbey made the mistake of just writing about one dam. He should have made this more relevant to the people who are affected by a dam near them. This would have gotten more attention,...

...Colin Powell is a great speaker. I really enjoy watching this video. He gave such an encouragement to continue on in being great leaders. One of the ideas that I enjoy the most is when he stated, “Have a purpose.” He continued on explaining that an organization needs to have “a sense of purpose what are we here for.” This statement is extremely important in organizations today because companies can start focusing on making money instead on helping improving the community, “the society.” If companies start with the purpose of selling a video that helps others learn how to read, then they should only continue on selling and improving the video, not selling the video in a higher price with advertisement with lessons not pertaining to how to read....

...Second, leadership is “goal directed.” A leader’s actions are purposeful, and center on assisting a certain group to attain specific achievements. Lastly, “the presence of leaders assumes some form of hierarchy within a group.” That hierarchy can be strictly influenced by one commanding officer, or it can be loose and informal, with many voices being heard. If you Google Colin Powell, words like success, power, and influence appear bold and demanding throughout every page. More importantly is how often the word leadership shines through. Unlike the many other powerful adjectives used to define him, the word leader is apparent in each and every search result of his name. Powell himself states “a successful leader is somebody who has the ability to inspire followers,” and inspire, he does. Having been a professional soldier for over three decades, Powell started from the bottom and rose through the ranks, eventually holding leadership positions such as platoon leader, second lieutenant, and general. Despite the many injuries he received while in battle, including a nearly fatal helicopter crash, Powell strived and survived, saving lives of his fellow soldiers along the way....

...Leadership Clifford Hedges McKendree University Abstract Leaders need to be knowledgeable in a wide array of subjects in order to lead their organization in the right direction. It is unfeasible to require all employees and leaders to know everything within the organization, but leaders must possess an expertise of their organization skills to fully lead. A leader develops expertise by having facts that derive from experience, training and education. Possessing knowledge better allows you as a leader to increase mental agility, exercise sound judgment and employ skills necessary to solve organizations problems. Leadership Leadership evolves overtime, the time from when you are born to the time that you die. It can be positive or negative it depends on the way you as a person are brought up. As complex leadership may be, having been in the military gives me a slight advantage in understanding leadership. So what is leadership? Leadership is the way that you motivate or influence an individual to accomplish a mission. My leadership style is task-oriented and relationship-oriented. Leaders influence subordinates, peers, and organizations to accomplish a mission or common goal. Army Doctrine Reference Publication 6-22 defines six competencies and attributes that form the leadership requirement model. (United States Army, 2012) These competencies and attribute are what a leader ‘is’ and ‘does’. They isolate how leaders effectively influence by defining formal...
