Handled with Care
Summary
The story “Handled with Care” by Bob Greene is about a lady who was walking in the street of Michigan Ave with no clothes on. This incident happens in a regular day when people were coming from work. when she walking in the steers a lot of people was looking at her but she didn't seem to mind she just had a smile on her face and she kept walking. A lot of people were starring at her. Man and women were taking pictures of her people. Some people the first thing they thought she was not normal. Some people knew it was a cry for help she wasn't crying but when people looked at her they knew she needed help. the lady kept walking some people had sympathy and didn't even speak to her cause they knew she was trouble and it seemed like most of the people that was around her was handling the situation with maturity. some people wanted to get the help she needed but no one wanted to get involved in the situation. As she kept on walking she just kept taking more of her clothes off till she was completely naked. the lady kept walking with no clothes on she was violating the rules but people knew she had a mental problem that's why they weren't trying to yell at her or telling her to put her clothes on. As she kept walking a police man tracked her down and found her robe on the sidewalk when he caught up to her he gave her the robe and escorted her to the medical center to get the help she desperately needed.
Analysis
In "Handle with Care "the author is impressed by how onlookers were sympathetic to the woman, not rude as a newspaper had reported. In addition, how we humans can live a regular lifestyle one minute and the next minute how easily we can lose our mind. He was also trying to explain how most people have the courtesy to handle the manor in a civilized way. And though she was violating the rules most people have never seen such a scene. How people wanted to help her but no one wanted to involve themselves. another point of view of the story the author was trying to let people know that how a regular day can turn out to be a very important lesson in life . and how its important to help and support people with mental problems without judging or misrepresenting. In the story the author pointed out how some police have the common curtsey to have the understanding to just arrest people running naked in the street without judging them. The author mentioned in the end how the media was criticizing the woman but the people on the street understood that the woman had a mental problem.
Personal Response
In my own opinion I feel like the lady was going through a lot of stress what caused her to go over her limit and couldn't bare it no more and that's what made her loose her mind it couldn't been from problems with her family or her relationship. Something sad was taking place people could understand her by not communicating but by just looking at her face expression. The people that saw the lady walking around the street naked i thought were really generous because no ne of the was rude to her nor yelling or cursing at her to me that was really courteous of them to act in such a respectful and polite way .I also noticed that the author had a point when he mentioned that "it took only a moment to realize that this was not some stunt designed to promote a product or a movie" I thought that sends a really powerful message to the reader because it explain how people have the common sense to realize that not everything looks the way it seems people realized that she was desperate for help and was trying to give them a sign. The author was mainly focused on how some people could be affected by years of stress and they keep it inside and struggle till one day they just can't handle it no more so they go berserk. Theres one part in the story that confused me when the author said "when the police caught up to her the woman just standing there in downtown Chicago still smiling" I thought at first she was in Michigan how did she walk all the way to Chicago? In the end i think the police did the right thing by giving the lady the robe to cover herself and given her the help she desperately needed. In conclusion the story was interesting well written and the plot was well written and the theme was well organized.
