Dragonfly 44 Research Paper

A galaxy doesn’t need lots of stars to be big. It can be dominated by the dark matter, just as our own galaxy Milky Way is 95% dark matter by mass. However, a galaxy has been found that is as big as our galaxy but is almost entirely dark matter. Named Dragonfly 44, this galaxy consists of 99.9% dark matter.
The galaxy was first detected last year through the use of WM Keck Observatory and the Gemini North Telescope in Manuakea, Hawaii, when the Dragonfly Telephoto Array noticed a region of the sky in the constellation Coma. Albeit being relative near to the earth, this galaxy hasn’t been detected by the astronomers for years as it is very dim.
Astronomers determined the amount of dark matter in Dragonfly 44 by using the DEIMOS instrument installed on Keck II to measure the velocities of stars. It took them 33.5 hours over a period of six nights to calculate the mass of the galaxy. …show more content…
However, there were very few of them to be moving so fast. Even those would simply fly away if there weren’t a gravitational force such as dark matter to hold them together.
Discovering Dragonfly 44 could help us better understand the dark matter. While our own galaxy Milky Way is mostly composed of dark matter, in its central region, the stars are most dense and dominated by regular matter. So, it’s pretty difficult to study detail about the dark matter. With this new galaxy, scientists will be able to see the effects of dark matter more

On-Chip Networks from a Networking Perspective: Congestion and Scalability in Many-Core Interconnects

...On-Chip Networks from a Networking Perspective: Congestion and Scalability in Many-Core Interconnects George Nychis†, Chris Fallin†, Thomas Moscibroda§, Onur Mutlu†, Srinivasan Seshan† † Carnegie Mellon University {gnychis,cfallin,onur,srini}@cmu.edu moscitho@microsoft.com § Microsoft Research Asia ABSTRACT In this paper, we present network-on-chip (NoC) design and contrast it to traditional network design, highlighting similarities and differences between the two. As an initial case study, we examine network congestion in bufferless NoCs. We show that congestion manifests itself differently in a NoC than in traditional networks. Network congestion reduces system throughput in congested workloads for smaller NoCs (16 and 64 nodes), and limits the scalability of larger bufferless NoCs (256 to 4096 nodes) even when traffic has locality (e.g., when an application’s required data is mapped nearby to its core in the network). We propose a new source throttlingbased congestion control mechanism with application-level awareness that reduces network congestion to improve system performance. Our mechanism improves system performance by up to 28% (15% on average in congested workloads) in smaller NoCs, achieves linear throughput scaling in NoCs up to 4096 cores (attaining similar performance scalability to a NoC with large buffers), and reduces power consumption by up to 20%. Thus, we show an effective application of a network-level concept, congestion control, to a class...

...BASF-Grameen launches magic mosquito net in Bangladesh by News Desk March 24, 2012 |[pic]Print |[pic]Send |[pic]Comment |[pic]RSS |Share: [pic]  [pic]  |[pic] | | | | | |[pic]  | | Click Image to Enlarge[pic] A joint venture project of world-famous German company BASF and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Yunus' Grameen has started commercial production of Magic Mosquito net in Bangladesh from March 23, 2012. Effective up to 20 washes, depending on local conditions, the fendozin-rich net would kill mosquitoes and other bugs within 20 minutes after they come in contact with it, said officials. The nets are already available across the country and cost TK 650~700 [US$ 8-9] a piece. The nets meet the requirements of the World Health Organization and are "extremely safe" for humans and other mammals, said Saria Sadique, managing director of BASF Bangladesh. The country's first Long Lasting Impregnated Net [LLIN] plant, which has been set up in the industrial park, cost TK 124 million and has created jobs for 800 people. The plant owned and operated by Grameen Fabrics and Fashions will manufacture the nets under the brand name Interceptor. BASF Grameen Limited will market the product. In near future, this magic mosquito net will also be exported to a number of countries in the world. The plant can now produce up to 3,000 nets a day and its capacity would enhance in days to come...

...Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar (Malagasy: Repoblikan'i Madagasikara [republiˈkʲan madaɡasˈkʲarə̥]; French: République de Madagascar) and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. The nation comprises the island of Madagascar (the fourth-largest island in the world), as well as numerous smaller peripheral islands. Following the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from India around 88 million years ago, allowing native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation. Consequently, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot; over 90 percent of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. The island's diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife are threatened by the encroachment of the rapidly growing human population. Initial human settlement of Madagascar occurred between 350 BCE and 550 CE by Austronesian peoples arriving on outrigger canoes from Borneo. These were joined around 1000 CE by Bantu migrants crossing the Mozambique Channel. Other groups continued to settle on Madagascar over time, each one making lasting contributions to Malagasy cultural life. The Malagasy ethnic group is often divided into eighteen or more sub-groups of which the largest are the Merina of the central highlands. Until the late 18th century, the island of Madagascar was ruled by a fragmented assortment of shifting socio-political alliances. Beginning in the early 19th century...

...Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...
