Chick-Fil-A's, America's favorite, drive thru takes about 200 seconds (3 minutes and 20 seconds) per costumer. A majority of American citizens go through drive throughs to get their food. 60% of fast food restaurants' income comes from the drive through. Drive throughs shouldn’t be banned, even though they do waste gas, they still save time and provide protection. [good but need more back ground] Drive throughs are very quick and easy to go through, hence saving time. The Fast Food Service Times studied that the average wait time over 7 fast food companies is 181 seconds (3 minutes). This shows that fast food restaurants don’t take but a little over 3 minutes, meaning a short amount of time. Powell, et al, state, "During quiet hours we

Censorship Hinders Education In Schools

...¨In an era of heightened sensitivity about what and how people say things, we need ongoing conversations about how literature can be part of our lives without undue stress and controversy¨ (Patterson). Sometimes people take things too seriously/personally and then get mad at that person for expressing their opinions, this causes a problem on how people chose what should be in school libraries. Topic discussion is a big part of making this a normality, create a better understanding of the book and its meaning and keeping the drive to read renewed in the discussions that will take place for the books. ¨When engaging in critical literacy, reader's question reality and entertain multiple perspectives about particular topics, attitudes, and behaviors ¨ (Patterson). This is a really good reason as to why banned books are good in education, they spark conversations about how the materials affected them as a person and how they grow and think. They create their own perspective of the world and grow around it and create new ideas and skills that they can use later on in life to help them move along. They create attitudes and personalities from these works that they will analyze and understand better than had they not viewed these materials. ¨I resisted this because it would require me to do two things: separate the collection into...

Texting While Driving

...Texting While Driving 2200 words Texting While Driving In America, turning sixteen is a huge milestone for most teens because that is when they finally get to drive a car. You spend time studying for the test, even more than you would for your algebra tests. You endure painful driving lessons from your overprotective parents who are gripping on the passenger seats for dear life and lecture you just for going a little bit too fast. Finally, when you are ready, you take the nerve-wrecking driving test where, if you are unlucky, your driving examiner would be a grumpy looking man who looks so strict you lose your nerve and start making silly mistakes. However, after going through the pain and hardships, you finally do it. You get your license and you get a little taste of freedom. No more having your mother pick you up after school or getting a ride with your dad who might sometimes embarrass you in front of your friends. Unfortunately, once you start driving, everything you have learnt went out the window. You drive with your radio turned up, you rarely turn your head all the way to the back when changing lanes, and the worst habit of all, you start texting and even talk on the phone while you are driving. The advancement of technology has made different forms of communication so easily accessible. Social media is such a huge part of us and it is all in the palm of our hands. Sure, it is a good thing that it is so convenient for us but doing all that while behind the wheel...

Drugs in Professional Sports

... Mount Writing Seminar March 6, 2012 Should There be Stricter Regulations for Drug Use In Professional Sports? Major sports leagues have a serious problem, which are performance enhancing drugs. Performance enhancing drugs seem to find their way into just about any major sporting event or organization. Even though there are penalties for those caught using performance enhancing drugs, they still seem to be prevalent among some of the biggest names in sports competition. A big reason for this is that the punishment given to those caught cheating does not have the punitive ramifications for possession or using a controlled substance that society expects. Even as advanced as the testing is for these substances, the guilty athletes are given the chance to prove that the test result was a mistake on the part of the laboratory conducting the testing, the fault of their trainer, or an over the counter supplement from a local health food store. Performance enhancing drugs are having a negative impact on all sports, and because of this, it will effect how future athletes conduct themselves. Most athletes will say that the drive to win is the reason that they use performance enhancing drugs. They feel that they are leveling an uneven playing field because no athlete today makes it on talent alone. They have to be on something. With the window of opportunity being so small and several trying to get through it, many athletes feel that they need that edge...

Letter to the Editor, an Article

...JUAN MAGGIE FOX Dear Editor, In the article, “First Lady Proposes Bon on Junk Food Marketing in Schools” from nbcnews.com states that Michelle Obama is against fast food advertising in school campuses. “Our classroom should be healthy places where kids are not bombarded with ads for junk food”, where her exact words in the white house. School should be a place where kids study and interact with healthy and educational material and not a marketing place for junk food companies. “If you can’t sell it, you ought not to be able to market it”, said U.S. Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack. Vilsack mentions as well that there are hundreds of millions of dollars spend a year in just marketing foods and drinks to kids in school. I strongly believe that all this should be banned since advertising persuades kids to buy more junk food and that is unhealthy for kids especially since kids spend forty hours in school a week. Mrs. Obama does right in proposing that junk food advertising should be banned from school, as I grew up most kids around me in school were not overweight but this was in the early 2000’s. However now things are very different, as I drive by school I see many kids who are eagerly eating unhealthy food such as chips and the bad thing is as they’re coming out of school, most of these children seem overweight. ...Freedom of Religion Scenarios “Your first case involved the eccentric Veronica, who did not practice traditional religion, but rather worshipped with poisonous snakes. Veronica argued her 1st Amendment rights to worship with poisonous snakes should be protected just like the 1st Amendment guarantees protection for other religions & the right for people to own guns. Her argument was the state should have never violated her religious practices. As judge or citizen, I can honestly say I have never heard of such faith & snakes scare the absolute hell out of me. There ain’t gonna be no snake worshipping in my town – judgment DENIED!” 1. Veronica’s beliefs may seem unusual but it still counts as a religion regardless whether you have heard of it or not. The establishment clause states that all religion must be read the same. The judge’s ruling is incorrect, especially because he/she is afraid of snakes and has never heard of these practices before. However, judge’s ruling would make more sense of he/she focused on dangers of poisonous snakes, since they have the ability to kill. If there is a possibility of snakes causing harm, then it would be rational to curtail that religion. For instance, religious extremists are not allowed to act on terrorism/violence, despite what their religion may preach... you cannot stone a woman to death simply because she cheated on you. In other words, there is a difference between practicing your religion and causing damage by your religion...

Bad Correlation Between Cellphone and Driving

...other people surrounding us on danger. I nearly crashed a motorcyclist while sending a message through a phone, fortunately my younger sister was there to remind me that there was an intersection up ahead, and I had to immediately hit the brake. I believe this incident did not only happen to me, because it is quite easily seen that people tend to still use their mobile phone while driving, and I also have to feel blessed that I still have my sister on my side at that time. According to Eby & Kostinyuk (2003), the main driver’s distraction that usually leads to an accident is when a driver has to dial or talk or text a cell phone. Many people underestimated the risk of using cell phone while operating a vehicle, that is the main reason why there are still collisions caused by a single cell phone. Secondly, there was once a series of Oprah Winfrey show that used ‘Distraction while driving’ as a topic, it discusses about the risk of using cell phone while driving. There were 2 people whose person they loved passed away caused by collisions involving cell phone. Oprah (2010) said that when people drive, it increases the likelihood of that person dies twice, when that person taking calls it multiples by 4, and when he text a message it doubles up to 8. Hands-free device is also as distracting as cell phone, because taking phones require a driver to listen to the person speaking through the phone, leaving the driver less likely to hear another driver's horn or an emergency siren...

Theoretical Legalization

...Legalization of controlled substances in America has long been a hotly debated topic. In our ethnocentric view, we tend to think we do everything better than any other country. Truth is, banned controlled substances and the subsequent fallout are serious problems that plague every community in America. From the streets of the inner-cities, to the suburbs of the heartland, drugs are destroying lives in many ways. Wherever you find drugs, problems are sure to follow. We will examine legalization of drugs from the standpoint of three common sociological theories in an attempt to determine if it would make more sense to continue on our path of banning controlled substances or if legalization would be the key solving our problems. We, as Americans, should step away from our ethnocentric mentality and explore alternative methods to combat drugs in communities across America. Functionalist perspective, as explained in our text book, states, this perspective, “Emphasizes the way in which the parts of a society are structured to maintain its stability” (Schaefer, 2011). With that in mind, legalizing controlled substances would lead to several aspects of society being drastically changed. A counterculture of legalization would eliminate the power of drug cartels. Producing and selling our own drugs via legalization would lead to tax revenues generated from the legal sale and taxation of such substances. These tax revenues could lead to more funding in government infrastructure...

Part A of the Ohio law states “No holder of a temporary instruction permit who has not attained the age of eighteen years and no holder of a probationary driver's license shall drive a motor vehicle on any street, highway, or property used by the public for purposes of vehicular traffic or parking while using in any manner an electronic wireless communications device” (R.C 45.11.205). Word to Youth: Texting, Driving Don’t Mix

...occurrence, but even worse is an accident that could have been avoided. In a March 2010 article in USA Today,Larry Copeland wrote“Word to youth: Texting, Driving Don’t Mix”, in which he tells the horrific story of the day Mariah West died while driving and texting on her way to a friend’s baseball game. Copeland shares the heartfelt work of Mariah’s mother as she endlessly shares the dangers of driving and texting with teens and their parents through various means such as television, radio and the internet. Larry Copeland talks in his article of hearing through focus groups on Facebook from many teenagers who admit to texting while driving that believe they have figured out how to text and drive “safely” or “can put the phone on the top of the steering wheel and do it”. Copeland mentions AT&T’s campaign theme “Not worth dying for” which takes on groups of texters and asks them to pull out their cell phones and look at their last incoming text and then ask the audience if that text would be worth dying for. I believe all states in the U.S should completely ban texting while driving because texting distracts the driver, drivers get caught up in their emotions while texting, texting cause slower reaction time and insurance cost rise. One major effect of drivers texting is the mere distraction of it. Drivers receiving text may feel that the text is urgent and a response is needed so they start the reply process which takes their eyes and hands off the road for seconds at a time...

...In America, guns have been a part of the country’s society since its birth. Throughout history, citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, and to hunt for food. The challenging issue of gun control takes a harmonizing act of extreme measures. Weighing the rights and liberties for each individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a risky balancing act. In the United States, gun control is an issue that has both sides firmly imbedded in their beliefs. In this time of turmoil and growing violence, gun advocates feel more than ever that their position is justified. The issue of gun control continues to remain a controversy. A large number of citizens believe that if gun acts are strictly enforced, that violence and the threat of crime will reduce everywhere. On the other hand, a large amount of society feels that they deserve the right to bear arms and will stop at nothing to protect their second amendment. Society benefits from firearms in the hands of responsible citizens. Attempts to keep firearms away from these citizens do more harm than good. ...Censorship: What’s the fuss? When should censorship in art be put in place, and should it be put in place? Allowing art such as that of a very provocative taste will definitely cause a lot of noise. Noise like the standards needing to be invoked that deal with images of naked children in their works, as any work with naked person is pornography. For methods of censoring, would it be fair to retract any monetary gain if the art is “inappropriate” or “lewd,” or should the work be banned? Should Congress be able to step in and have a say in the censorship, or is messing around in federally funded art overstepping their boundaries? In the education field too, they have to try to make a decision to censor or allow provocative works of art. The...
