The future is here. In the 80s it was predicted that the future would have hovercrafts and time travel. While neither of those things have been released to the public yet, driverless cars are right around the corner. For about a decade, engineers and mechanics have been working together to build a car that is completely driveless, and therefore, safe. These could help elimate reckless driving and keep inebriated people from attempting to driving themselves home. Texting while driving would not be a problem and long commutes could be used to get work done. Driverless cars are possible in the near future. Driverless cars use Lidar, which is a light detection and ranging laser that helps the car drive. When connected to a computer, Lidar can sense the …show more content…
The sensors must be updated. In a recent Tesla Model S crash, the car's autopilot feature did not detect the difference between a trailer and the skyline. This crash resulted in a lot of drama surrounding driverless cars and cost lives. People say these tests should not put life in danger. If a desktop computer can easily get a virus and be hacked, can that happen to cars? This question is being posed by many, and is extremely controversial. How do you develop a car that drives by itself, but cannot be hacked and taken over by villians. A car being controlled by a "bad guy" could cause serious security and health concerns. These driverless cars can also not distinguish the differences in weather. How would a driverless car drive in fog, snow, ice? The radars and sensors will have to be updated to take these factors into account. It is hard to program a computer to react like a human would. Artificial intelligence sees the world as black and white, but who is to blame if a driverless car gets in an accident? All of these problems must be worked out before driverless cars can be released to the public
