...Driverless cars will allow the transfer of driving functions from a human driver to a computer which should reduce the amount of traffic accidents by removing the most common cause; human error. While there is a lot of potential for good with the introduction of driverless cars, there is also the problem of ethical, legal, financial and economic issues. Self-driving cars can’t be brought further forward until certain issues have been solved, such as safety requirements for the cars. A key legal issue is who would be responsible if there was an accident whilst the car was in control. This is difficult to pinpoint as blame is mostly shared between driver, insurer and manufacturer. It is the responsibility of Government to address this issue,...

...Who do we file a claim against? Is the car faulty? Is anyone at fault? Unfortunately, since there is no clear-cut department for robotic law, there is not a clear-cut answer either. Though I’m sure as driverless cars are becoming a more realistic future, this is an issue that’s becoming more prevalent on the manufacturers’ minds. Ideally the cars would be designed to never result in an accident, but I’m sure they realize that may be an unrealistic idea. Since driverless cars are becoming closer to reality, people like Ronald Leenes and Federica Lucivero are attempting to create a concrete answer to these questions through what they call Laws on Robots. This is composed of 3 laws, all of which “…clearly place robots as subordinates to human beings.” (Leenes & Lucivero, 3). It’s a sticky situation, both for the producer of these robots, and the consumer; We want these things to think, just not for themselves. Since human lives will always be a priority to humans, any other life will likely be neglected if a human’s is a stake. Although there’s probably a whole other paper I could write arguing whether a robot has a “life”, it will “live” to serve humans regardless. The Laws of Robots was likely not written specifically for driverless cars, as these are not supposed to be humanoid, just machine. But as technology advances and robotics grows, it may not be long before we see a robot...

...Ana Gordina Application Paper - BUAD 307 April 20, 2015 Self-Driving Taxis (Uber): Secondary Market Research Proposal Description: Self-driving taxis will be provided by Uber and would create an additional type of transportation offered to consumers. These taxis will not require a human driver to be present at the wheel. The car will include the latest technology, including GPS systems and smart traffic control, which will get the customer from point A to point B upon request and with minimal delays. The concept of self-driving cars has become very popular in the recent years. About 10 years ago, people were suspect about the safety and overall feasibility of the self-driving machines, let alone self-driving taxis. Today, as more tech companies, like Google, are coming up with these cars and testing their performance, people become more willing to give up their seat at the wheel (Emarketer). Whenever new technology comes out in the market, marketers manipulate on how a specific customer segment will react to the product. Take for example, personal computers or internet and how nobody could have predicted that these products would become a commodity. Yet, today, people can’t picture living without them. Knowing what are the benefits and costs of the product make it easier to create a marketing plan for the product. Thus, this report will cover the following subtopics: 1. Driverless Vehicle Research

...“A driverless car is a robotic vehicle that is designed to travel between destinations without a human operator” (Whatis.com, 2011, September). Plenty of research has been done to explain the benefits of autonomous vehicles. The research covers a wide variety of benefits; however, this paper will bring focus on three major benefits of autonomous vehicles. These benefits will include a reduction in traffic jams, reduced crashes, and increased mobility amongst the disabled. Current theories and research on autonomous vehicles indicate that self-driving cars will reduce congestion. Self-driving cars are adjusted to operate at a particular speed. These cars preserve a regular distance from other automobiles and do much less lane adjustments. According to Bose and Loannou (2003), “if 10% of all vehicles on a given freeway segment are AVs, there will likely be an AV in every lane at regular spacing during congested times, which could smooth traffic for all travelers” (As Cited in Fagnant & Kockelman, 2015). Thus, it has been shown that AVs have the potential to reduce congestion....

We will discuss here specifically the split or disruption in the insurance business with a focus on the auto insurance product and less complex personal insurance products. These two products are on a trajectory to become fully commoditized with little or no agency interaction within 30 years. To the extent that the Internet reduces transaction costs, it also creates opportunities for new intermediaries as well as existing ones. It also has a natural influence on product design. For example - in some cases it is economically attractive to unbundle and repackage various forms of coverage. We will discuss this further in reference to driverless cars and bundling the insurance with the product later in the paper. This paper is organized in the following manner. First, we will briefly look at internet trends as the introduction. Next we will summarize the traditional insurance business, and the reduction of transaction costs through internet insurance.
