The Drivers Safe Lock: The Revolutionist of Driving Safety Statistics have shown that the leading cause of car crashes in Texas results either from texting or using a phone while driving. Foundations such as the “Distracted Driving Foundation” have tried to outlaw using a phone while driving; however, they have not been successful in eliminating the problem. Others speculate that physical contact with your phone is only part of the problem and suggest that a distraction like Bluetooth, which allows one to speak without using a phone distracts the mind from the road and is also a problem that needs to be solved. Well, why not solve both these issues with one device? The revolutionary Drivers Safe Lock (DSL) makes driving safer by using world …show more content…
Many of the volunteers in our studies stated that their phone was a major distraction for them while they were driving. Whether it was a phone call or a text message, the drivers we studied who used their phones showed a substantial loss in focus while the drivers that used DSL experienced an increase in attention to the road. The reason the drivers with DSL outperformed other drivers is due to the fact that their phones were locked away in the middle console. The DSL will not allow the driver to retrieve his/her phone without first turning of the car making sure the phone cannot be used while on the road. With phones out of sight and drivers allowed to focus on their driving, accidents will be greatly reduced.
Finally, many scholars argue that removing the phone from sight is just the tip of the iceberg, and that innovations such as Bluetooth also contribute to a lack of focus while on the road. These issues are combated by the DSL with its patented technology. The case’s copper wire scrambles signals and restricts the phone from connecting to the car via Bluetooth. As an extra measure of precaution the auxiliary cord that places the phone on airplane mode restricts Bluetooth from sending out signals. With Bluetooth restricted, drivers can focus on the road without any distractions from their

...ABS The ABS, as it is commonly called is the abbreviation for Anti-Lock Braking System. This is a feature that many of the newer cars come fitted with. But it was not always the case, and still is not the case with several makes. What is the ABS? Before that question is answered, it is perhaps necessary to look at the "brakes". But simply, a brake is a system device that reduces speed or stops a moving object (in this case your car) by creating a force in the opposite direction. Insufficient pressure (brake torque) in the brake system causes "wheel lock" while the vehicle is moving above 80 km/h on a dry paved road surface. Premature "wheel lock" occurs from turbulent shock waves being generated by the uneven braking surfaces (rotors or drums contacting the pads/shoes), vibrating or slapping against the hydraulic pistons in either the clippers or the wheel cylinders. The force of these shock waves can be easily 100 times that of brake torque or the maximum pressure exerted on the rotating brake components. These shock waves have more than enough force to lock the wheels. Wheel lock occurs when brake torque forces exceed tyre grip forces. The impact would be much greater if the road surface is slippery due to rain, oil spills or other causes, or if the vehicle is driven at great speed. At speed, control of the car is difficult, especially at corners where there is a tendency to skid. Statistics show that approximately 40% of automobile accidents are due to...

The Law of Conservation of Momentum states that in the absence of a net external force, the momentum of an object or a system of objects remains the same. A large momentum and short amount of time will result in a larger force, the same works in the opposite direction, this is where car safety devices come into play. Active Car Safety Devices Active car safety devices work to preclude or avert the chances of an accident while on the roads. Through today’s technology there has been a great leap into the evolution to the how people are kept safe while inside a potential accident on 4 wheels. Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) As the main focus for an active safety feature the anti lock braking system (or ABS) ceases the effects of skidding allowing the driver to remain in control of the vehicle. Due to the large disappearance of friction between the tire and the road the vehicle becomes much more difficult to...

Compare and Contrast Essay

...As the economy continues struggling to recover, and people’s household budgets are getting smaller, over paying at the pump and not getting sufficient gas, mileage is a huge issue. In 2011 alone, the annual vehicle gas cost was $4,417.08, which is a rough $368.09 a month just put in the gas tank for day-to-day transportation needs. This does not include the annual cost to maintain a vehicle, things like oil changes, repair cost, and mileage maintenance. At some point, people will start thinking enough is enough, and start looking into purchasing an “economy based” vehicle to meet their everyday needs at a lower overall cost of ownership and gas price. Two of the leading cars for the economy today are; the Toyota Prius and the Ford Fusion, they are both gas efficient; however, they do differ in purchase price and lifetime performance. Those are two main things I would take into consideration when purchasing a vehicle in this economy. If we take into consideration the financial situation, the United States is in today, having a car that does not cost a fortune at the pump to fill and would be easy to maintain is ideal. When purchasing a vehicle an area that often overlooked during the purchasing a vehicle is the gas tank capacity. The Toyota Prius gas tank size is on the smaller size side at only 12 gallons, which means the national average to fill this car is only $45.12 each time you go to the gas station. This vehicle also comes with an alternative power option, the Prius runs...

...possibilities for creative practice (Edmonds et.al. 2005). The Auto driver is a creative project that aims at converting a simple human activity, driving a vehicle into a computer technology aided activity. Sharma (2006) notes that humans are intricately bound up with technology. With that in mind, creativity combined with technology can perform a simple task as driving a vehicle. The Auto driver is a technology project to develop a self-driving vehicle. Using GPS (Global positioning system) and other relatively new driving technologies, and combining them into one functional unit able to drive a car. A GPS system currently in use for driving involves indicating available parking spaces (Hsu 2010). Auto driver will take this idea further and use the GPS system to navigate cars through highways and city streets, without getting lost or losing control. By combining technology that is in place, it is possible to develop this car. By use of low cost sensors, the car will be able to recognize other cars in front and behind it while on the road. Similar technology developed by researchers at Rutgers University is helping in parking cars (Joentz 2010). Overview Edmonds et.al. (2005) Point out that the cutting edge in the digital arts is a highly fertile ground for the investigation of creativity and the role of new technologies. In this project, the idea is to research develop a car with an onboard computer system named Auto driver. A system that combines an automated engine to drive the car...

Safe Driving

...increased from year-to-year due to texting and driving and we need to put a stop to this! Our group has decided to invent a phone application that will prevent texting and driving from young teens to adults. This application will be marketed to parents with teen drivers, insurance companies, and businesses like UPS, FedEx, etc. The application will be called “Safe Driving” and it will be available on all Apple and Android markets. This application will be downloaded on the drivers phone to ensure they are not texting and driving. The way this application works is that once it is downloaded on the phone, the user cannot delete it. For example, if a parent purchases the application for her teen son or daughter, the parent can only delete this application since it is password protected. The phone will have a GPS that will tell the application once the car reaches 10 miles per hour, the texting ability of the phone will be deactivated. This application will also be marketed to businesses that have delivery trucks as an application that will inform the company if the driver has staid on route or has stayed within the speed limits. When looking at our competitors, there is only one company that offers a safe texting application. This application is not well developed and it actually lets you text, which defeats the purpose of no texting and driving. The application is marketed as a hands free texting application, which we believe it is still dangerous since you have...

...Among all collisions in Indiana, failure to yield right of way is the most common primary factor. According to the Indiana State Police, over 93 percent of all fatal collisions are listed as having some driver action as the primary factor. Accidents are caused both by a driver’s lack of attention and a driver’s failure to observe the rules of the road. What To Do After an Accident Drivers and passengers can be injured anytime, anyplace. That’s why such occurrences are called accidents – an unexpected, unfortunate situation in which one is rarely prepared. Knowing what to do after an accident can make the experience a less frightening one and decrease the chance of unnecessary complications. • Stop. If you are involved in an accident, you must stop and provide information to others involved in the accident. It is a serious crime to leave the scene of an accident which can result in the suspension of your driving privileges. If the accident results in injury, death, or entrapment, you must also notify law enforcement of the accident. • Alert other drivers that an accident has occurred. Turn on your emergency signals or use another means to let people know that there has been an accident. • Move to the shoulder of the road if possible. Indiana law states that drivers involved in crashes that do not result in injury or death should not obstruct traffic more than necessary. Off the roadway or on the shoulder is a much safer place to exchange information or wait for law...

...An illustrative example about the difference between first cars and modern ones is reported in figure 2.5. As figure 2.5 shows, old cars did not have mechanisms or systems in order to avoid an accident or protect the occupants and attenuate the impact. This problem has been confronted by new design of cars and it has induced an increment of automobile safety. Depending on the point of view, safety may be classified as active safety and passive safety. Figure 2.5: Old car vs. modern car [10] 2.2.1 Active safety Active safety is formed by all systems installed in the vehicle whose purpose is to avoid a collision, or at least, to reduce the probability that it occurs. It includes [11]: • DADS (Driver Alertness Detection System): System to prevent crashes caused by fatigue. • Automatic Braking Systems: To prevent or reduce the severity of collisions. • Infrared night vision systems: To increase seeing distance beyond headlamp range. • Adaptive headlamps: Control the direction and range of the headlight beams to light the driver's way through curves and maximize seeing distance without partially blinding other...
