Cancelling School

...Canceling School In the article, For Mayor, Keeping Schools Open Brings Another Headache, Michael Grynbaum reported that the new Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio and the schools Chancellor, Carmen Farina made the decision last Wednesday to keep NYC schools open on Thursday in the wake of the impending snow storm. The decision to keep schools open set off a firestorm of criticism and the Mayor found himself being publically called out by Al Roker of the Today Show. (Grynbaum, 2013) NYC schools rarely close and have only done so on 11 occasions over the last 40 years. Mayor de Blasio defended himself saying, “It would be nice if we got a video the night before of what the next day looks like”. (Grynbaum, 2013) That remark was met with criticism from Al Roker who stated, “Mr. Mayor, I could never run NYC, but I know when it’s time to keep kids home from school.” (Grynbaum, 2013) The decision to close schools or keep them open during inclement weather is a question that many districts are facing across the country this winter. School districts throughout Indiana are trying to figure out how they will make up the lost school days to meet the 180 requirement. I understand Al Roker’s comments that the schools probably should have been closed. But, sometimes I think we lose sight of other consequences of closing schools. In my position, I worked with the NYC Department of Education for 6 years. Their student population is larger than the city of Indianapolis at 1,000...

Sexting

...Sofía Solano Mendoza James Denza Seminar Academic Inquiry 27/04/2011 SEXTING Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit photos via text messages, and is shockingly common among teens. According to Katie Couric of [Fox News], [Sexting] is “the new craze all over the country among 11 to 17 year-old adolescents.” A recent study by MSNBC found that 20% (1 in 5) of teens between the ages of 12 and 17 have sexted in their lives. Teens say “sexting” is one way to gain approval from peers or possible suitors. Teens in America are facing criminal charges of child pornography for sending and receiving nude pictures. These photos are often forwarded from friend-to-friend via cell phone and even around entire classes. With the availability of technology, young people are not aware that once they start cyber-swapping photos they are on the Internet to stay. If these photos get into the hands of the wrong people such as college admissions or future employers they could ruin the chance to fulfill a dream and there is nothing sexy about that. In fact, I see a relation with the movie of American Beauty, because in the entire movie Rick the neighbor of Jane is filming her with some erotic scenes. The media image of scantily dressed individuals is so common that teenagers don’t feel that it is wrong. It isn’t uncommon for teens to follow media and act like the people they see on the television everyday. In music videos it isn’t uncommon to see women...

Luxury Cosmetics Maker Weighs the Benefits of Selling Items on Tv

...Emmy-winning TV makeup artist. She created her first foundation and concealer products seven years ago while working for Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, and the rest of the hosts on “The View.” 2. Contributions and Uniqueness With sales growth slower than desired, Eve Pearl, the founder, is considering pitching her high-end cosmetic products — priced well above department store levels — to a broad audience by appearing on ShopNBC, a 24-hour TV shopping channel in the mode of QVC. While working on “The View,” Ms. Pearl started selling her brush-on products from her New York apartment. By 2008, she had become Ms. Vieira’s personal makeup specialist. She followed the broadcaster backstage on the sets of “Today” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” appeared on “Today” herself, and basked in the glow of a ribbon-cutting. She was flanked by morning show stars — Ms. Vieira, Ann Curry, Hoda Kotb and Natalie Morales — at the grand opening of her stylish 700-square-foot Upper East Side boutique. A YouTube posting of that celebrity-filled debut attracted tens of thousands of viewers and encouraged Ms. Pearl to start posting promotional videos demonstrating her techniques and products. That proved to be a good thing, with Internet orders soon outstripping her boutique business and her wholesale deliveries to makeup professionals. By 2011, Ms. Pearl had more than 100 products — some with prices as high as $98 — and more than $1 million in revenue. Her online sales were accounting...

Future Sight Project

...Smartdrones Drones are generally autonomous, generally flying robots that carry out various tasks, whatever is designated by their owner or their programmer. We have seen a rise in drones operating in many fields of both service and industry, and I believe in twenty years these drones will be just about everywhere. There have been several attempts to bring the social network, and really the online experience as a whole, into a new platform. Whereas now, just about everybody has a phone, in two decades I think just about everyone will have a personal drone. It will likely have a sort of holographic projection that will connect to everybody, or only those who you choose. It will carry your information if you wish, possibly your finances, and there will be thousands of ways to customize its appearance. It might be asked, couldn’t somebody snatch your drone and steal everything? My answer to that is in twenty years’ time, we will see a major increase in cyber and personal security alongside development of these drones. The assimilation of personal drones into our lives will have a massive impact in our lives. The greatest change will be a social change. We have already seen how smartphones, while incredibly useful for myriad reasons, created barriers between people. While improving our ability to communicate with our friends and to the entire world, the apps and flash player games gave everybody an excuse to ignore everyone and everything around us. Why talk to a stranger on...

Argumentaive Drones

...Is the Use of Drone Military Tactics or not? In 2002 of February 4th history was made that allowed CIA and military to use such extraordinary equipment that made it safer for pilots and national security defense to use to spy on our enemies around the world without being noticed or even harming a human life at stake. But what can we really say that these drones let alone can be worth so much money of the tax payers that we don’t see the results that they are really made for.The drone was made and it was made for just that purpose in that world to help aid in the fight in counter-terrorism let alone not let any more of our military pilots put their lives at risk in dangerous zones. But due to recent events that lead to a sort of downfall in using these pilot less drones, is it actually worth the billions we spend on it to be used in the military or is it even worth having though due to some malfunctions of the drone killed innocent civilians not only from other lands, but our own American civilians as well. Does America really needs these drones that can help with the war on terror and costing us so much money let alone deaths, or do we need something different or not even the drones at all. Back in 2008 while I was serving in Afghanistan and right now I am gearing up for another tour right after the final week of school has ended, I remember hearing about the drones and what the purpose was for. At the time I could never really see one up close and let alone be in the same...

Drone Commercialization Pros Cons

In 2012, Congress passed the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 in favor of the commercialization of drones which proposed general rules for small unmanned aircraft systems conducting non-recreational operations. Although speculations about these new rules in regards to United States’ businesses and economy are promising, issues such as privacy and safety have been neglected. The history of drones derived from the Wright Brother’s breakthrough experimentation with manned aircraft flight. Nearly a century later, “swift technological...

Drones, Ethics, and the Armchair Soldier

...Drones, Ethics, and the Armchair Soldier This is an article by the philosopher John Kaag about how the military is dealing with the changes in today’s environment with military warfare and the affects it has on the ground pilots that are driving drones to eliminate targets and terrorists. 10 years ago the Iraq invasion was a remote control game for the soldiers, very similar to how we use our remote controls for channel surfing on the TV or video games today. Many people use remote controls to play games, shoot animals, and blow up buildings to entertain themselves. The military uses similar remote controls to direct and deliver devastating military assaults against enemies and terrorists. Today the operations of the traditional chain of command is similar to writing directions for robots but without having to think about ethics behind it. Now soldiers do not have to be carrying pounds of gear while fighting and fearing for their lives, instead they do their jobs sitting down, they have something in common with philosophers who do their job sitting down. John quoted, “For the first time in history, soldiers have something in common with philosophers: they can do their jobs sitting down.” This provides the remote control soldier additional time and ability to think about how they will use a drone to eliminate a target. Soldiers today need to work their way through arriving at the logical answer of their orders and decisions while working through existential responsibility...

Mexico has virtually no UAV regulations to date, the Mexican governments attitude is encouraging to the use of UAV’s even to the point of using drones themselves in everything from university work to drug activity and more. New Zealand and Australia share virtually identical policies on UAV’s that are completely hands off and can be flown freely.
