Should the United States Continue Its Use of Drone Strikes Abroad?

The use of drones in the world has been known for some time now. Almost every country to this has day has acquired or has the technological advantages to industrialize these machines. There has always been a problem with should we send troops or not. Send missiles from home to our enemies. But now we send unmanned aerial vehicles or UAV’s that have no effect on American lives but cause chaos anywhere else. Here is the real issue. Should the United States continue to use drones, despite their long-term consequences, or should America deny itself the short-term effectiveness that drones provide? There is little question that armed UAVs are good at their job that is killing terrorists. Over 3,000 extremist operatives have been killed by drones since President Obama took office. However, the same tool that notices today’s terrorist seems to create the terrorist of tomorrow. Any supporter of drone use needs to recognize this reality, and opponents need to understand that drones offer strategic advantages that other means of addressing imminent threats do not. Many will ask what the victims did to deserve such an unexpected and fierce attack. The answer is simply that they were members of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda and the U.S. government felt that they were too big of a threat to national security. Many argue that such a decision is best left to the courts and should not be entertained by the executive branch. They say that using drones is a violation of rights like due process and stops them from having their day in court. I believe that drones do far greater good than evil. Drones protect us. They are not a threat to a law abiding citizen and in this increasingly technological age drones are a necessity to protect such citizens. Many fail to realize the process that goes into selecting a target. Agencies debate for hours over whether a person is dangerous enough to need to be taken out. It is not a light decision. Those who are taken out pose an imminent threat to the United States safety. Drones reduce the risk to soldiers, are cheaper to use, and are extremely effective in reducing terrorism. Drones should continue to be used by the U.S. to take out terrorists, thereby protecting the country’s national security.
Contrary to popular belief these drones are not a new tool on the market. Unmanned aircrafts have been in use dating back to 1849 when the Austrians launched balloons mounted with bombs to attack the city of Venice. Since then drones have become increasingly more sophisticated. The invention of Elmer Sperry’s automatic gyroscopic stabilizer opened the way to radio controlled drones in the early 1920’s. The drone world was revolutionized in the 1980’s by Abraham Kareem, who built the “Albatross” drone that managed to stay in the air for fifty six hours (Sifton). This was quite an improvement from previous drones, which often crashed on missions. This success lead to funding from the military, which inevitably lead to better drones until the Predator drone, which is currently in use, was built. In 1995 the U.S. Air Force established itsu first squadron of these UAV’s, although their main use was still almost exclusively for surveillance. In 2001 these drones were successfully equipped with Hellfire missiles, giving the U.S. the ability to neutralize terrorist threats from afar. Later that same year, on October 7th, these armed drones were sent to Afghanistan to be used in the war on terror (Shaw). Since then drone activity has increased and the drones themselves have only improved.

Recently online shop Amazon has announced on television about using drone to deliver package ordered within thirty minutes [2]. Although this project make take about four to five years to launch, human safety and regulations set by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been invoked till further development [2]. Amazon is not the only company using drone in fact Amazon gave inspiration to other companies to start investing in drones. With drones creating buzz in business world currently, next stop of its technologies being input is in aircraft. Drones Regulations

...UK however, is not the only country that has relaxed rules and regulations on the use of drones. Mexico has virtually no UAV regulations to date, the Mexican governments attitude is encouraging to the use of UAV’s even to the point of using drones themselves in everything from university work to drug activity and more. New Zealand and Australia share virtually identical policies on UAV’s that are completely hands off and can be flown freely. There is only one difference between New Zealand and Australia’s regulations, and that is Australia requires anyone flying it for commercial purposes to acquire an easily obtainable identification certificate. On the other side of the spectrum there are also countries that are less then flexible in...

...Is the Use of Drone Military Tactics or not? In 2002 of February 4th history was made that allowed CIA and military to use such extraordinary equipment that made it safer for pilots and national security defense to use to spy on our enemies around the world without being noticed or even harming a human life at stake. But what can we really say that these drones let alone can be worth so much money of the tax payers that we don’t see the results that they are really made for.The drone was made and it was made for just that purpose in that world to help aid in the fight in counter-terrorism let alone not let any more of our military pilots put their lives at risk in dangerous zones. But due to recent events that lead to a sort of downfall in using these pilot less drones, is it actually worth the billions we spend on it to be used in the military or is it even worth having though due to some malfunctions of the drone killed innocent civilians not only from other lands, but our own American civilians as well. Does America really needs these drones that can help with the war on terror and costing us so much money let alone deaths, or do we need something different or not even the drones at all. Back in 2008 while I was serving in Afghanistan and right now I am gearing up for another tour right after the final week of school has ended, I remember hearing about the drones and what the purpose was for. At the time I could never really see one up close and let alone be in the same...

Drones Are Going Mainstream

They come in all shapes and sizes, but no matter how small they are the danger of what they are capable of is still there. The military have used these drones for bombing and spying. Civilians are trying to push rights to own drones for reasons such as keeping an eye on crops. Many believe that the constitution would be taking a back seat to let boys play with their toys if this were allowed. Too many things would happen if these machines were put in civilian hands. Violation of privacy, danger of bombing, and interference with commercial air traffic are main issues when thinking of letting civilians have this kind of technology. Drones, also known as UAV’s, have many different purposes. There are so many different types of drones in the marketing world. The most common ones have been used for military purposes. The US military has two types of drones. UAV’s, unmanned aerial vehicles, are used for high tech surveillance. Drones, Ethics, and the Armchair Soldier

...Drones, Ethics, and the Armchair Soldier This is an article by the philosopher John Kaag about how the military is dealing with the changes in today’s environment with military warfare and the affects it has on the ground pilots that are driving drones to eliminate targets and terrorists. 10 years ago the Iraq invasion was a remote control game for the soldiers, very similar to how we use our remote controls for channel surfing on the TV or video games today. Many people use remote controls to play games, shoot animals, and blow up buildings to entertain themselves. The military uses similar remote controls to direct and deliver devastating military assaults against enemies and terrorists. Today the operations of the traditional chain of command is similar to writing directions for robots but without having to think about ethics behind it. Now soldiers do not have to be carrying pounds of gear while fighting and fearing for their lives, instead they do their jobs sitting down, they have something in common with philosophers who do their job sitting down. John quoted, “For the first time in history, soldiers have something in common with philosophers: they can do their jobs sitting down.” This provides the remote control soldier additional time and ability to think about how they will use a drone to eliminate a target. Soldiers today need to work their way through arriving at the logical answer of their orders and decisions while working through existential responsibility...
