...Mandela----Invictus Mandela Invincible: African Biography, 1999: “You had no doubt when you were with [Nelson Mandela] that he had what we call in our language 'shadow'—substance, presence. He was regal.”—Desmond Tutu A herd boy from an isolated mountainous area who did not wear shoes until age 16, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela rose against overwhelming odds to be president of the richest, most culturally diverse country in Africa. He endured more than 27 years in jail for trying to overthrow a white police state, becoming the world's most famous political prisoner. He led voteless black South Africans from the racist apartheid period into a democratic era in 1994. (Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning apartness or separateness. It is a system of segregation based on race that favors whites and restricts blacks to labor reserves.) Celebrated as an international hero upon his release from prison in 1990, Mandela will be remembered as one of the twentieth century's towering leaders. Mandela will also be remembered as the precedent-setting African head of state who announced his retirement at the peak of his power after only one five-year term in office. By retiring, he passed "the baton" to a new generation, leaving behind a reputation untarnished by corruption and brutality that besmirched so many long-term African leaders. More than anyone else, Mandela bridged African and European cultures--taking the best from each. He was an educated man, a lawyer, a democrat, a shrewd...

...№ 18 [Type text] : HEADLINES by Craig Halsall Dear all, Spring Holiday IGCSE & A Level Revision Programmes An important letter has been sent home with Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 pupils. Parents will also have received a copy of the letter via email and notification of the same via my official school Twitter feed, @CRHalsall. The letter explains an opportunity that we are considering offering to pupils taking IGCSE, AS or A2 examinations this summer. The importance of effective revision in helping pupils achieve their best possible grade is well documented. Effective revision can often make the difference and help pupils achieve higher grades. We also believe that pupils find it difficult to revise at home, which can be stressful for parents too. We are therefore considering offering an intensive revision programme during the last major school holiday before the summer exams. Full details of the programme are set out in the letter. There is also a link to an online survey that will take a maximum of two minutes to complete. The purpose of the survey is to understand the level of interest in the revision programme. A large number of pupils have expressed an interest in attending the programme, but it can only run should there be sufficient demand. Please complete the online survey by Monday 2nd February to express an interest in learning more about the intensive revision programme. Key Stage 1 Open Forum The Key Stage 1 Parents’ Open Forum...

Waste Management

...Introduction Solid waste management is a polite term for garbage management. As long as humans have been living in settled communities, solid waste, or garbage, has been an issue, and modern societies generate far more solid waste than early humans ever did. Daily life in industrialized nations can generate several pounds of solid waste per consumer, not only directly in the home, but indirectly in factories that manufacture goods purchased by consumers. Solid waste management is a system for handling all of this garbage; municipal waste collection is solid waste management, as are recycling programs, dumps, and incinerators. To the great benefit of archeology, early solid waste management consisted of digging pits and throwing garbage into them. This created a record of the kinds of lives that people lived, showing things like what people ate, the materials used to make eating utensils, and other interesting glimpses into historic daily life. When human cities began to be more concentrated, however, solid waste management became a serious issue. Houses that did not have room to bury their garbage would throw it into the streets, making a stroll to the corner store an unpleasant prospect. In response, many cities started to set up municipal garbage collection, in the form of rag and bone men who would buy useful garbage from people and recycle it, or waste collection teams which would dispose of unusable garbage. Waste Management Waste management is the collection, transport...

Poverty

...Poverty Reduction Strategy and Poverty Monitoring: Philippine Case Study By Celia M. Reyes and Lani E. Valencia* I. Introduction The overarching goal of development efforts is the improvement in the quality of life of the people. The Philippines is no exception. Being one of the nations who participated in the Millenium Summit in September 2000, it has committed to achieve 48 targets including eradication of poverty. In addition to international commitments, the Philippines has been working toward poverty reduction for decades. It has even included targets on human development and poverty reduction in its medium-term development plans. The growing consensus is towards a comprehensive approach to poverty reduction. Rapid and sustained economic growth is needed to improve the quality of life of the population; at the same time targeted interventions aimed at reducing poverty are needed to reach the very poor and marginalized sectors of the economy. With poverty reduction as main goal of the government, the demand for poverty statistics has become more important. Several poverty monitoring systems are being conducted both at the national and community level providing income and non-income based measures of poverty. These have become the basis for social and economic development plans and programs of national and local governments. The objectives of this paper are to examine the poverty situation in the Philippines and to assess the country’s poverty reduction strategy and policy...

Any other reproduction or use is expressly prohibited. Chapter 1 The Product CHAPTER OVERVIEW AND COMMENTS The goal of this chapter is to introduce the notion of software as a product designed and built by software engineers. Software is important because it is used by a great many people in society. Software engineers have a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that the software they design does no serious harm to any people. Software engineers tend to be concerned with the technical elegance of their software products. Customers tend to be concerned only with whether or not a software product meets their needs and is easy to use. 1.1 The Evolving Role of Software The main point of this section is that the primary purpose of software is that of information transformer. Software is used to produce, manage, acquire, modify, display, and transmit information anywhere in the world. The days of the lone programmer are gone. Modern software is developed by teams of software specialists. Yet, the software developer's concerns have remained the same. Why does software take so long to complete? Why does it cost so much to produce? Why can't all errors be found and removed...
