THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study Every person has a right to an education. Here in the Philippines, we can choose to attend a public school or a private school. And there are some who prefer home schooling, depending on the family’s financial capability. If the family cannot financially provide for private schooling, they can apply for academic or athletic scholarships. This gives the family of gifted children an opportunity to attend good private schools and make something of themselves. Scholarships are not just given to those who are intellectually gifted, thus giving more chances to students with other talents to be able to attend good private schools and get good quality education that they rightly deserve.
Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the effects of being a student-athlete. Hence, the researcher seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What are the benefits of being a student-athlete?
2. What are the disadvantages of being a student-athlete?
Significance of the Study The study will greatly benefit athletes, particularly those who come from financially disadvantaged families, to attend very good private schools. This could be their guideline on how to go about in applying for athletic scholarships and what is required from them once they become scholars. This study will also help future athletes to determine if they can be students and athletes at the same time without compromising the quality of education that they can have by attending good private school.
Assumptions of the Study At the beginning of the study, the researcher had the following assumptions.
1. Student-athletes do not need to study to pass.
2. Student-athletes are given special treatment by their teachers and classmates.
3. Scholarship is limited to popular sports like basketball and
