...Abstract The journey of the thirteen former British Colonies toward a lasting union of Independent Sovereign States had officially begun with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Fifty-six men, appointed by their fellow citizens of each Colony, meeting in Congress assembled, determined that the only logical course of action by which they could throw off the strong hold of tyranny was to declare the independence and sovereignty of the individual colonies, and join together in a partnership, for their common defense, the security of their Liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade, or any other pretense whatever. In so doing, these fifty-six men, on the authority of the good people of the colonies, signed the Declaration of Independence, mutually pledging to each other their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. The youngest of those men was a man named Edward Rutledge from South Carolina. Edward Rutledge Edward Rutledge was born in 1749 at or near Charleston, S.C., he was the 5th and youngest, son of Doctor John Rutledge, who emigrated from Ireland to South Carolina, about the year 1735. His mother was Sarah Hert, a lady of respectable family, and large fortune. At the age of twenty-seven, she became a widow with seven children.
