Dunstan is trying to explain that every individual portrays more than one personality although nobody witnesses them because of others first impressions. Depending on the situation you are in, one of your “sides” will be expressed. At the beginning of the novel “Fifth Business” Dunstan Ramsey is not a very popular, high class man and is implied to be a lonely tedious person according to his schools paper calling him by his nickname “farewell corky” (Page 13). Further on Dunstan takes part in the army where he encounters boredom in an inactive way which leads him reminiscing about his town and family, revealing one of his side's, fear. He finds it outrageous that the soldiers could not conceive that he can play a funny character due to a religion stereotype, that one who reads the bible can have a funny characteristic. Dunny is mostly concerned at the fact that these men are not aware that every man is a contradiction in some way, personalities have many sides to them. In addition, my opinion to Dunnys statement about the astonishment of how others can not register the multiple personalities a person can have even if they do not appear so because of where they come from or how they are raised. In this situation, Dunstan was viewed as just another spiritual village boy who has not yet settled with the reality of war and because of this, stunned him when all the other soldiers were surprised he had another personality to him. To answer the question as to “ How many sides do you have?”, is unknown because I have not been expressed to different situations where I can reveal all my different personalities. I would consider myself to have many different personality traits such as, caring, optimistic, calm, capable and enthusiastic. Those are listed because they occur in general situations I encounter.
