The director has the responsibility for the quality of a preschool program. Indirectly families also have a say in program’s quality. Obviously, there would be no program without families as clients. Early Childhood Education Program Analysis

...The two that I would consider adopting to use in my own program if I was in charge of curriculum development would have to be RIE (Respectful Infant Educarer) and the multi-generational program. The reason why I would consider these two options is because I believe that both ways would benefit the children. I found each of the programs very unique in their own way and that both not only teach the students, but the professionals as well. Both programs would definitely help with the children’s social/language skills and many more like physical development and fine motor skills. What I read in the first selection that promoted me to consider this appropriate for me and my program was that this childcare took a chance and it help them a lot! A baby to an elder, you should always be respected and the way that this theory is set up is that unless a child can sit up by themselves, they are not put in a seated position. I loved how the teachers would always say what they are going to do to the child before the teacher goes and does it. What promoted me for the second program was that I found it very sweet that the children were able to talk, play, and comfort the elders. It reminds me when I spend time with...

Article Review

...Reviewing “A Survey of Higher Education Programs in Nine States” Cecilia Clark Liberty University With all the students graduating from teacher education programs each year, one may wonder about the quality of educators they are producing. Are these educators qualified to handle the stressors and challenges associated with leading and developing today’s youth? Furthermore, are these educators prepared to face the tests associated with training the early childhood education community? Proper early childhood development and education is critical to a child’s success down the line. How educators react to early childhood behavioral, physical and emotional issues is a precursor to classroom success. The research of Hemmenter, Santos and Ostrosky as discussed in the article “Preparing Early Childhood Educator to Address Young Children’s Social-Emotional Development and Challenging Behavior: A Survey of Higher Education Programs in Nine States” sets out to evaluate teacher education programs in search of answers to such questions. As with all research, the higher education programs survey (2008) seeks to explore and possibly identify solutions to an issue. In this case, that issue is the preparedness of educators to handle “the growing number of children who begin elementary school without the emotional, social, and behavioral skills necessary for future success (Hemmenter, Santos & Ostrosky, p. 321).” To answer this question, Hemmenter, Santos and Ostrosky, identified...

The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods

...The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods Gildon R Turner AIU Online Abstract This country prides itself in being a better place for people to come and work better and to get a better education. We are falling far too short on both counts more so with education. We are still not separated and equal. This paper will talk to you about the differences in the minority neighborhoods and why our government should be taking a closer look at the lack of early childhood education and how this education is an investment into our future. The Lack of Early Childhood Education in Minority Neighborhoods Early childhood education is an investment in our future. Haycock, K (2011) stated that, “In minority neighborhoods there are less early childhood educational facilities and if they exist low-income and minority students are less likely than their white and more affluent peers to have the teachers with the proper academic background to teach the subject matter they are teaching”. Due to the shape of the economy at the present time, it is even harder for minority children to receive this type of education. Most are one parent families and are not making the money it would cost to send their children to a good head start program. “So when black and Latino twelfth-graders perform at about the same level as white eight graders, it is not just a “minority” problem; it’s a national problem...

What Early Childhood Teachers Need to Know About Language

...EDO-FL-00-07 What Early Childhood Teachers Need to Know About Language Considerable evidence exists that high-quality early childhood education programs for children from birth to age five can have long-lasting, positive consequences for children's success in school and later in life, especially for children from low-income families (Barnett, 1995; Frede, 1995). However, such programs are not available for all children who need them, nor are all programs of the quality that is necessary to achieve positive outcomes for children. In fact, only about 15% of child care centers are judged to be good or excellent. A recent study of a random sample of Head Start programs found that, while none of the programs was poor, the level of quality varied, and support for language and literacy learning was weak in many programs. Not surprisingly, children in the better quality programs out-performed children in lower quality programs on measures of learning and development (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1998). Overall, Head Start children's expressive language skills were below national norms, but in the better quality programs, children's scores approached or matched those of their middle-class counterparts. Recently, the U.S. Department of Education released a study of the skills and knowledge of a nationally representative cohort of children at entrance to kindergarten showing that social class and other group differences are already evident this early (West, Denton, &...

Culture

...An Investigation of How Culture Shapes Curriculum in Early Care and Education Programs on a Native American Indian Reservation ‘‘The drum is considered the heartbeat of the community’’ Jennifer L. Gilliard1,3 and Rita A. Moore2 This article investigates how culture shapes instruction in three early care and education programs on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Interviews with eight early childhood teachers as well as classroom observations were conducted. The investigation is framed by the following research question: How does the culture of the family and community shape curriculum? Data analysis suggested that ongoing communication with parents and community about teaching within a culturally relevant context, building a sense of belongingness and community through ritual, and respecting children, families, and community were essential to defining the Native American Indian culture within these early learning programs. KEY WORDS: culture; in; tribal; early; education; programs. INTRODUCTION Instruction informed by children’s home and community culture is critical to supporting a sense of belongingness that ultimately impacts academic achievement (Banks, 2002; Osterman, 2000). American school populations are increasingly diversified with immigrants and English language learners; but American teachers are over 90% European American (Nieto, 2000). Educators who are from different cultural perspectives than those present in the families and communities of the children they...

Early Childhood Education

...Early Childhood Research Quarterly 19 (2004) 375–397 The early childhood classroom observation measure Deborah Stipek∗ , Patricia Byler School of Education, Stanford University, 485 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305-3096, USA Abstract This study assesses a new measure of early childhood classroom practice in 127 kindergarten- and first-grade classrooms. The measure was designed to be appropriate for classrooms serving children from the age of 4–7 years. It assesses the nature and quality of instruction as well as the social climate and management of the classroom. Two separate scales assess the degree to which constructivist, child-centered and the degree to which didactic, teachercentered instructional practices are implemented. Findings indicate that the measure produced reliable scores and meaningful, predictable associations were found between scores on the observation measure, on the one hand, and teachers’ self-reported practices, teaching goals, relationships with children, and perceptions of children’s ability to be self-directed learners, on the other. © 2004 Elsevier Inc.
