EASTGATE MARITIME CORPORATION

Historical Background

In 1989, Eastgate Maritime Corporation (EMC) was established to handle the manning requirements of its principals with mixed nationality crew complement. As the company expanded its manning activities, it established in 1991 the IOTC Training Center and Dormitory in Bicutan, Paranaque, Metro Manila. In this facility, the company provides in-house training to hone technical skills and to strengthen the behavioral conduct and values of its crew. With the growing confidence on the capability of IOTC and EMC to provide them with quality seafarers, Showa Line, thru its subsidiary, Showa Line Engineering Co. Ltd., entrusted EMC to supply Filipino seafarers for its new VLCC, the MT "SATSUMA". Soon, different types of vessels like, car carriers, woodchip-carriers, were added to the existing fleet of Cape Size bulkers, VLCC, LPG carriers and Heavy Lifters. Increasing demand for Filipino officers worldwide coupled with the shortage of qualified officers locally, led to the adaptation of IOTC & EMC of a family oriented approach on its recruitment to maximize retention of its officers and crew. The annual IOTC/EMC Christmas Party for its allotees was started in 1991 to enliven and uplift the spirit of the families left behind by our crewmembers onboard during the most significant time of the year. This was followed by Seamen's Wives Seminar to help the spouses of crewmembers cope up with the pressure of raising a family without the physical presence of their husbands. Financial assistance thru low-interest loans were extended to the families to help them during times of emergency, school opening, etc. An Allotees'Center was established, manned by a competent staff to attend to the needs of the allotees. Moreover, a Loyalty Award was also given to crewmembers' who have served the company for at least ten (10) continuous years. These measures enabled IOTC & EMC to retain a high percentage of its crewmembers. In 1995, IOTC & EMC transferred to its new office, the Eastgate Centre. It also expanded its training facilities to keep pace with the ever-changing requirements of the maritime industry, especially with the implementation of STCW 1995. Last June 19, 1998, IOTC & EMC obtained from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) its Crew Manning Office Certificate. With this certificate, IOTC & EMC has shown its full commitment to fulfill its vision.

...Sponges can pump thousands of gallons of water a day through their skin. The 71-story Pearl River Tower’s south side is porous like a sponge. Wind turbines are housed in four holes, harvesting the wind into energy-producing turbines. The Eastgate Center in Harare, Zimbabwe was inspired by the building methods of African termites. These termites build gigantic mounds which are heated and cooled during the day and night through an elaborate system of vents. The vents are constructed so that air is brought in from the lower part of the mound, through muddy enclosures where the air is cooler, then up through another channel to the top. The termites regulate the temperature by constantly creating new vents and blocking old ones. Their life quest is to keep their gardens of fungus alive so the colony is well fed and self-sufficient. Architect Mick Pearce designed a ventilation system for the Eastgate Center that operated in a similar way. Outside air is warmed or cooled and then vented into the floors and offices before it flows out of...

Biblical Counseling

...Larry Crabb’s Theory of Biblical Counseling Dr. Larry Crabb has a unique approach to counseling. His system of counseling, called Biblical counseling, will be explained in great detail. Dr. Crabb’s first book, Basic Principles of Biblical Counseling, was published in 1975. The basic parts and theories of his system, along many changes in theology and emphasis’ will be also explained in detail. Crabb (1975) believes that ". . . the most basic problem of every human being is his separation from God, a gulf made necessary by the fact that God is holy and we are not" (p. 17). Crabb, like most other Christian counselors, claims that his system is biblically based. The foundation of Crabb’s counseling style is the Bible. God has revealed truth to us in two ways, general and special revelation. Crabb (1987) believes that,". . . many Christian counselors have adopted a method of study that treats the bible as helpful, informative, and insightful- but neither authoritative nor sufficient" (p. 37). The bible is to be allowed the final word. The questions that are answered by the Bible are authoritative. Dr. Crabb divides problems into two categories, the first category are those resulting from natural or physical causes. This would include such things as a chemical imbalance, and learning disabilities brought on by common, perceptual disfunctions. The second category is composed mostly of problem that are essentially moral. Crabb believes the Bible is sufficient for providing a framework...

Qualifications of a Biblical Counselor

...Counseling, Biblical or non-Biblical, in today’s society comes in many different forms and through many different people. Counseling could come formally through a pastor or a psychologist or informally through a friend, family member, or co-worker. When a person is deciding who to turn to for counseling for any type of situation in their life, one question they may ask is “Who is qualified to be a Biblical counselor?” This paper will attempt to answer this question and show the Biblical qualifications of a Biblical counselor. Required Qualifications Romans 15:14 says, “And I myself also am persuaded of you my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.” In this verse, Paul clearly indicates three distinct characteristics that an individual must possess to be a Biblical counselor. The first qualification that Paul indicates as a must for individuals to have is salvation. Paul shows us this with his use of ‘brethren,’ which means brother , in this verse. Paul uses brethren to signify that the people he was writing to in Rome were his brothers. These people were not physically his brothers, but they were saved so they were Paul’s brothers in Christ. The second qualification that Paul indicates in Romans 15:14 as a must for individuals to have is ‘full of goodness.’ Writers in the New Testament use three different Greek words for goodness. The word that Paul uses is this verse means moral goodness, upright, or virtuous...

...The following market analysis focus on an apparel organization called Spitz. It is a subsidiary of a holding group, called AVI. 1. Background on the organization The path that Spitz has traveled over the past 40 years is one of entrepreneurial delight and, in the most recent of those years, one of overcoming new branding challenges to see a phoenix rise and win back the hearts and soles of South African shoppers in 2007. The luxury shoe emporium was established in 1968 in downtown Johannesburg by Anthony and David Spitz as a departmental store offering top international brands. The store was later sold to Swiss company Bally and became Bally Spitz. In 2006 Spitz was acquired by JSE listed holdings company, AVI, by which time the once aspirational brand had lost much of its spark with a significant disconnect between the premium brands the store stocked and the brand image and shopping experience. Although the brand retained its heritage and still resided in the premium luxury sector of the market, consumers felt that Spitz offered less fashionable ranges within these international brand offerings. With Anthony still much involved in the business on a consulting basis, the team at AVI set about re-inventing and re-invigorating the Spitz brand in order to return it to its former glory while at the same time ensuring that the brand is relevant for today’s consumer. 2. E-Books

...Ebooks An electronic book (variously: e-book, eBook, e-Book, ebook, digital book, or even e-edition) is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on computers or other electronic devices.[1] Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book",[2] many e-books exist without any printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-book readers, however, almost any sophisticated electronic device that features a controllable viewing screen, including computers, many mobile phones, and nearly all smartphones, can also be used to read e-books. History The inventor of the first e-book is not widely agreed upon. Some notable candidates include the following: The first e-book may be the Index Thomisticus, a heavily annotated electronic index to the works of Thomas Aquinas, prepared by Roberto Busa beginning in the late 1940s. However, this is sometimes omitted, perhaps because the digitized text was (at least initially) a means to developing an index and concordance, rather than as a published edition in its own right.[3] Some years earlier the idea of the e-reader came to Bob Brown after watching his first "talkie" (movies with sound). In 1930, he wrote an entire book on this invention and titled it "The Readies" playing off the idea of the "talkie".[4] In his book, Brown says that movies have out maneuvered the book by creating the "talkies" and as a result...

In 2006, global government and capital expenditure exceeded US$1,480 billion making destination branding an important concept that still remains fragmented and unplanned. Dubai, an emirate of the UAE in the Middle East has been chosen as a case study to explain some elements of successful destination branding. This paper aims to apply a framework developed by Balakrishnan to explain areas of caution when competing in an international market where success is also partially dependent on the macro-environment. Design/methodology/approach – The framework was developed by reviewing literature on destination, place, corporate, product portfolio and service branding. The framework was tested using case study methodology. Secondary research was primarily used to develop the case. Findings – There is a strong fit with the model suggesting that destinations can use this as a basis for continuity in strategy even as governments change. Based on the analysis and review; a checklist for destination branding strategy was recommended. Research limitations/implications – Since, this study depends...

By and large the Witwatersrand marks the watershed between the Limpopo and Vaal rivers. The north and west of the city has undulating hills while the eastern parts are flatter. Johannesburg may not be built on a river or harbour, but its streams are the source of two of southern Africa's mightiest rivers. A number of streams meander through the suburbs of Johannesburg, and form the source of two of southern Africa's primary rivers – the Limpopo and the Orange. Most of the springs from which many of these streams emanate are now covered in concrete and canalised, accounting for the fact that the names of early farms in the area often end with "fontein", meaning "spring" in Afrikaans. The constructs of performance and risk are matched together to provide new perspectives for researchers and practitioners. Design/methodology/approach – The conceptual and empirical work in the supply chain management field and other related fields is employed to develop a conceptual framework of supply chain risk management (SCRM). Risk in the supply chain is explored in terms of risk/performance sources, drivers, consequences and management responses, including initial approaches to categorization within these. Two empirical cases are used to illustrate the application of the framework. Findings – A new framework is presented that helps to integrate the dimensions of risk and performance in supply chains and provide a categorisation of risk drivers. ...Tutorials, Posters, Panels and Industrial Contributions at ER 2007 Conceptual Modeling for Virtual Reality Olga De Troyer, Frederic Kleinermann, Bram Pellens, and Wesley Bille WISE Research Lab Vrije Universiteit Brussel Pleinlaan 2, B-1050 Brussel, Belgium {olga.detroyer,frederic.kleinermann,bram.pellens, Wesley.Bille}@vub.ac.be Abstract This paper explores the opportunities and challenges for Conceptual Modeling in the domain of Virtual Reality (VR). VR applications are becoming more feasible due to better and faster hardware, and due to new technology and faster network connections they also start to appear on the Internet. However, the development of such applications is still a specialized, time-consuming and expensive process. By introducing a Conceptual Modeling phase into the development process of VR applications, a number of the obstacles preventing a quick spread of this type of applications can be removed. However, existing Conceptual Modeling techniques are too limited for modeling a VR application in an appropriate way. The paper will show how Conceptual Modeling can be done for VR and how this may make VR more accessible to non VR-specialists. Furthermore, the paper will explain how Conceptual Modeling embedded in a semantic framework can provide the basis for semantically rich VR application, which may be essential for its success in the future and its use in the context of the Semantic Web. The paper will also point to some open research problems.. Keywords:...
