...well for Tesco, and we had a higher sale than we have today. Investors once called Tesco a darling of the U.K. stock market, until January where everything went down for us. The shares has fallen by 20 percent. After this fall in market shares, my boss the longstanding chief Terry Leahy who have been CEO for Tesco for 14 years, have just gone off. The new CEO for Tesco is Philip Clarke, and it was not a nice sight he met the first couple of weeks. Experts have said that Mr. Clarke need to reconnect with customers and change the business’ culture. We did also launch the Fresh and Easy at the worst time possible, just one year into the financial crisis in 2008. We did also make some obvious mistakes though. We had no coffee in the store, as the first thing in the morning, there was no frozen food as Americans like and so on. That is why investors have called 182 Fresh & Easy stores to fail. The U.S. stores Fresh and Easy did also fail to take off and we did not catch that many customers. Still, we have some big international investors such as Warren G, BlackRock and the Singaporean Government. As a matter of fact, one in every seven pounds spend in UK are spend in one of our stores but we still needed to improve the business. Many customers...

...About Arby's® Arby's® is the place for people hungering for a unique, better tasting alternative to traditional fast food. It's the favorite place for people who crave something different and better. Serving one-of-a-kind menu items, Arby's is well known for slow-roasted and freshly sliced roast beef sandwiches and famous Market Fresh sandwiches, wraps and salads, made with wholesome ingredients and served with the convenience of a drive-thru. From day one, Arby's Roast Beef Restaurants offered an innovative menu, offering guests something other than hamburgers in the newly inspired quick service segment. When foodservice veterans Leroy and Forrest Raffel opened the first Arby's in Boardman, Ohio on July 23, 1964, customers enjoyed roast beef sandwiches, potato chips, and Texas-sized iced teas. To name their new venture, the brothers decided on Arby's, which stands for R.B., the initials of the Raffel Brothers - although many suspect the R.B. stands for roast beef. Leroy and Forrest never looked back. They fine tuned the operation and sold the first franchise to Sam Feldman the following year. Today, Arby's rich heritage is comprised of several multi-generation franchise owners. In fact, Jim Raffel, founder Leroy's son, owns and operates three locations in Maine. The enterprising spirit that originated with the Raffel Brothers has fueled the development of Arby's throughout its 41 year history. The company added an average of 50 restaurants a year in the 1970s while...

...The meaning of dynamic nominalism is that in naming classifications of human types, people come to fit the label given. A new possibility is offered and this can influence individuals to adopt characteristics and thus fit in to the new classification. This differs from inert nominalism and realism as this label may not always be the same one used for the individual, as social change gives birth to new opportunities, individuals may move categories. This essay is going to explore Hacking’s term dynamic nominalism through the illustration of some of the issues in the emo society. The concept of dynamic nominalism claims that in giving a name to a category a new opportunity is created for human types to adopt. New types of people start to exist that in some respects did not before. We can see this through the emergence of the emo society. The term emo is short for emotional it was first used as a description for a genre of music named emotional hardcore, with lyrics full of sad and depressed emotions. As the music became more popular adolescents found a sense of belonging within the music, (Gorce 2005) and a new possibility that allowed their emotions to be expressed emerged. As dynamic nominalism explains “new slots were created in which to fit”. (Hacking 2002:100) The emo society was custom made to fit the youth who wanted to express their emotion. The emo society and the emo person were born in unison, in the same way that dynamic nominalism states “a kind of person came into...

...Eat Drink Man Woman Anthony Bourdain, an American chef and author of the book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, displays that food is a way of ceasing haggard and pessimistic feelings, and bringing forth true and real emotions through his following quote; “For a moment, or a second, the pinched expressions of the cynical, world-weary, throat-cutting, miserable bastards we've all had to become disappears, when we're confronted with something as simple as a plate of food” (Bourdain, A, 2000). From the viewpoint of communication studies, food has been, and remains to be, a significant representation in our foundation of meaning. Food, as an everyday necessity of social life, is an important aspect to study as it expresses current social studies through distinct relationships of class, education, gender, and sexuality. In addition, the customs of sharing foods and meals have been key in communicative practices in cultures all over the world. In the following paragraphs, the Taiwanese feature film Eat Drink Man Woman, managed and written by well-known director Ang Lee, who also successfully directed movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, will be analyzed to see how food is constructed and represented in the movie. In the film it is stated by character Jia-Chien that they “communicate by eating” (Lee, A, 1994). This is important because it displays that food is a form of expression and communication, a form that is commonly misunderstood or avoided...

...BUSINESS NOVEMBER 23, 2010 The Just-in-Time Consumer By ELLEN BYRON Julia Robinson for The Wall Street Journal Rebecca Seabern in her destocked pantry. She is using groceries that she already has before buying more. Executives peddling wares from canned goods to cashmere say the shift in consumption habits is prompting them to change how they produce, package, price and deliver their goods. When the economy sank two years ago, Rebecca Seabern realized she could shrink her grocery bill just by eating into her crammed kitchen pantry. "I had eight boxes of lasagna in there and a year's worth of paper towels," says Ms. Seabern, a 31-year-old accountant and married mother of two in San Antonio. Today, Ms. Seabern still has her job, but her antipathy to hoarding hasn't changed. "I've stopped purchasing things just to have them on hand," she says, preferring to make bigger mortgage payments instead. ...them), someone exclaims, “I have an announcement to make”. With these words, the words that follow initially appear detrimental to the very fabric of the family. When Jia-Chen explains that she is moving out, or when Jia-Jen and Jia-Ning discuss their wishes to marry, Master Chu realizes that just like his sense of taste, his girls are leaving him in his old-age. However, the actions that push the family farther apart ultimately bring them closer together. Eat Drink Man Woman drives home the theme that father knows best. Throughout the film, Chu’s Confucian fatherly figure, for the most part, lacks fluent communication with his daughters; yet, in the end, he exploits the strength of family ties and the importance of verbalizing his love. Even though there may have been both a contrast between his and his children’s attitude towards the dynamics of the family and a distinct separation between their perceptions of being selfish and selfless, Chu elects to redefine himself and his relationship with his daughters. Perhaps Eat Drink Man Woman’s most intriguing attribute is...

...Jersey on April 28, 1944. She graduated from the University of California in 1967 with a degree in French Cultural Studies. She is married to Stephen Singer, a wine and olive oil merchant and a painter, and has a daughter, Fanny, who was born in 1983. Alice interest in food began when she traveled to France during her junior year to study at the University of Paris. She couldn’t get enough of the tastes of fresh local foods. After graduating in 1967, she went back to Europe, for postgraduate study at the Montessori School in London. She returned to Berkeley and began teaching at the Montessori School there. After longing for the same kind of freshness from the local food she tasted in France, she decided to open her own business. She opened Chez Panisse in 1971, serving a five-course, fixed-price menu that changed daily. This was the great transformative event in American culinary history. The principle of Chez Panisse was that food—both animal and vegetable—should be absolutely fresh, and that meant absolutely local (Weinberger). Because all her food has to be fresh, she only buys from local ranchers, fishermen and farmers. Local farmers’ markets and organic foods grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones, are just a few of the trends set by Waters that swept the nation in the early 1990’s. Now you can find an organic-produce section in your supermarket produce aisle. Waters next mission was to teach students about food and nutrition. In 1994, she began...

It’s all about choices that fit our lifestyles. Keywords: eat, fresh, fast, healthy, flavor, convenience, nutrition Food – so many varieties, so little time. Eating is an activity that most of us do at least twice a day. People need food to survive, but can make different choices in the kind of food they choose to eat and where it comes from. Fresh, homemade food and fast foods have considerable differences in convenience, flavor and health effects. ...Which is the better choice Fresh, Frozen, or Canned foods? Healthy eating, daily exercise, and keeping a healthy weight is most important of someone who is health conscious and cares about there body and well being. Making healthy food choices can be difficult in today's world. Additions in the food industry and how our food is prepared and packaged have changed dramatically. Anyone who goes to the supermarket now has the option to purchase canned, frozen, or fresh foods. So which one do we choose? Each of these options vary in different nutritional value, taste, and health risks. It is important to know what we consuming and what may be a health risk and what may not be. I will never forget the time when I tasted vegetables that were freshly picked from mothers garden how delicious they were. The taste, colors, and how they looked, at young age, would set a standard of the quality of food that I would choose to eat for the rest of my life. I did at sometime had the chance to try canned vegetables but I was not pleased. Comparing those fresh delicious vegetables to the taste of a canned vegetable that was probably sitting in that can full of water and oil for who knows how long, was incomparable. The look of the canned was simply unattractive, old, wet and squishy. Comparing that to the bright color, snappish texture, and overall taste of a fresh vegetable was incomparable. But having to choose from fresh, frozen, or canned can be confusing for some people and knowing...

...QINGBO FENG SALES MANAGEMENT FRESH FRUIT STAND BACKGROUND Tulane students typically eat little fresh fruit, and after some research, I conclude it into several basic reasons. First, this is a food culture thing in American hospitality industry. Sometimes people simply don’t like fruits and vegetables, but often American diet is simply not fruit or veggie-centric. If you look at most menus posted in LBC in front of each food counter, you will notice that the entrees are primarily meat or grain based: “BEEF STEAK”, “ROSTED CHICKEN”, “PASTA DISH””SAUSAGE PIZZA””SANWADGE””STEAMED RICE””HAMBURGER”… Salad served in LBC tends to consist of some vegetables and fruit, but the amount of fruit is really limited. Usually, Fruit is only an after-thought in most dishes, or people tend to enjoy fruit during the break in afternoon. But existing cup-fruit is standardized and is not flexible for the preference of different fruits. it’s disappointing for some people because of the limited varieties there. Different people have different appetite for fruit. For example, Apple is known as the “king of fruit”, but I still keep on hearing some people’ complains about the bad taste of apple. Furthermore, fruits and vegetables also haven’t been extensively packaged in ready-to-eat forms. There are rows and rows of “open and eat” lunch meats, cheeses, cereals, granola bars, crackers, but just a handful of easy to consume, fresh fruit options. Most fruits require washing and peeling, perhaps chopping...
